phase 1 172 buying advice

Car  MK3 GTI golf 16v
Going to look at one later, what should I be looking for ? Common faults ? What miles should belts be done etc etcAny help would be good, cheers guysSorry would of searched but I'm on my phone at work and viewing it on the way home

I have seen it local with an ad in its window so don't have a link sorry. It's in weymouth in dorset if that helps, and its silver, ill get the registration later on

Ah right okay. I suppose it just the usual checks-

Drives well.
Gear change is smooth.
bodywork etc looks good, taking into consideration its elevan years old.
Service history, full will be a bonus.
Not a million owners, but again baring in mind the age its going to have a few.
It will more than likely have a lumpy idle, they all do so dont let that put you off. Just make sure its not excessive.
Cambelt is a must to be honest as im sure your well aware their expensive to get done.

I think more importantly you will know when you see it/drive it if its the car for you. Whats the age, milage, price etc?

Dan.

Ok mate cheers, I didn't have time to read the sign all I know is it was something like 1300 quid, that sound too cheap ? Cheers

No not really mate depending on condition etc. They seem to vary alot on price tbh, depending on alot of things. Let me know how you get on

Dan

Just had to drive somewhere so had a quick look, it is 1200 quid, 12 month mot and tax and looked in pretty good condition except 2 things.... the front bumper seemed to not line up to well with the wings, and there was a tiny bit of paint peel/rusting on the rear arch

Front bumpers often get knocked- & rust is beginning to appear on some of these older cars- they are both cosmetic- but will cost a few quid to get done- try & haggle some money off for those elements-

S

Recon the front bumper just needs doing back up properly ? I'll give it a good look later on and let you know

The most important thing is the cam and auxiliary belt change. Its a big expense so you either get the car cheap or get one with the work done. I chose one that had it all done.

Bumper sound like the clip? My drivers side front one is the same. Rear arches, again seems common, mine has some rust coming through but not bad by any stretch

dan

As long as rusty arches aren't a huge issue, like it spreading then that's ok. How hard/ expensive is this bumper thing ?

that is really nice actually, let me do an insurance quote and if it is reasonable then i will arrange to go and view it.

also has what i already want to do to it, the phase 2 rear

Cam belt is due at 72k or 5 years, which ever is soonest.
Aux belt due 36k I think.

Very important to do BOTH with BOTH tensioners. A failing aux belt can take the cam belt out with it ;)

ok well my plan is...provided he wants too...my mate owns a garage, im going to see if he will take my 1.2 as payment for cambelt/aux full service, new discs and pads if needed etc etc. just take my car as payment to get the car mint. otherwise i suppose ill just have to not use the 172 for a week or two to save some money up.

will be ringing the person selling the car later on :)

It gets said a lot on here but you need to make sure a specialist or at least someone who knows what they are doing and has the official locking tools does the belts.

You hear some horror stories of belt changes going bad on here, just a word of warning.

Your looking at about £500 from memory for the belts but that car looks well worth £1300 in its current condition and for £2000 fully serviced it would be brilliant value.

Yeah I know my mate owns a Renault specialist so I presume they will have the right gear for the job

only thing thats just concerned me is, you said the cambelt should be done at 72K, this hasnt had it done yet and its at 92K. should i be worried about this? what other mechanical things should i be looking for

thats what i just thought, also do you know if thats a standard number plate? i cant find the car on insurance websites when i put the reg in
