Possible fix for inner CV boot splits

Cro

In a last ditch attempt i'm trying something out there and random as a fix for spit inner CVs.
Using a large bicycle tube repair patch (the soft stretchy rubber) and cutting it into a bananna shape I am able to cover a significant area of the small split.
Im going to glue it on as per usual bicycle and leave it overnight.

Im hoping to get it MOT'd at some stage tomorrow so I will let you know how that gets on, and if / how long it lasts.

It might not be a go-er but it might also jog the genius minds of Andy, Danny, Fred, Matt etc as to a similar but better way of fixing this currently un-servicable item :)

This would be my 3rd, definately trying this first! Next stop is a brand new one if this doesnt work so no loss

Would love there to be a fix. I bought a new one and it lasted 2500miles. Renault wont replace as its on coilovers.

The whole boot has come away.

CBA paying another £200 out for shaft and fitting etc.

Yeah Ben the problem seems to come that when its lowered the boot is stretched beyond what it can take.
Thought about removing the clip that holds the smallest end of the boot to the shaft and moving it closer to the gearbox end, might solve the issue?!?

Its not that low though really, ive emailed renault to see what they say.

Yeh though of that, but its too late now.

Thought about putting another boot over the top, and attaching it to the silver bit of the shaft, if you can picture it

Yeah thought about that too, figured there wasnt enough room between the shaft and the block unless it was a completely flat cone style boot

ph1 172 dont have bend in it, ie its not fastened to the back of the block, thus why i went for that system :D

ph1 uses a 1 piece shaft, not a split shaft. The inner end on single piece shafts is different, and there's a replacement boot kit available I believe

So does this mean the PH1 shaft will fit a PH2??

Looking for a long term fix here, as dont want to be replacing £160 shafts every 6 weeks.

Replacement boot aswell, that sounds promising....

Had the MOT there and the guy gave it a serious going over, I was there for an hour. CV joint fix was fine now i'll just keep an eye on it over the next few days /weeks to see how it holds.

Ironically the car failed on the ABS warning light not lighting up on ignition as the only fault

just to let you know a split inner cv boot does not fail an mot, only the outer boots will fail
