Question re panel filters

Clio 172 Cup / Polo GTi
Hi all,

Quick couple of questions regarding panel filters, have been looking specifically at an ITG item:

1. Does it make much of a difference in noise compared to standard?

2. Where is the best place to buy?

I've searched the forum and read a bit about the various options for aftermarket air filter upgrades, its my girlfriend's 172 Cup that its for! I have a BMC filter on my Polo and she has been seduced by the sound of it :D but not sure if a BMC is suitable for the Clio?

Reversible mods are where its at in this instance :)

Cheers

Like you have mentioned ITG panel filters, a lot of Clio owners seem to be drawn to using these, however it is a matter of individual choice, I have always used K & N filters albeit panel or otherwise, they are cheaper than ITG the best filter to use is the paper replacement filter as your engine breathes better. ITG and K& N are really a money saver long term as you don't have to replace them. The induction kits are ok, however you have a heat issue, if it is an exposed cone type filter.
I would think that the type that have a heat shield will be better efficiency wise re cold air flow.

Depends what your aims are, if you are doing track days then induction kits are probably the best bet. For ordinary road use a panel filter is best IMO,

No point in wasting your money on expensive induction kits if you are not going to use it on the track. IMO :)

Which part of Shropshire are you in? I'm over in Telford.

I've had an ITG panel filter in my 172Cup since the back end of January. They're always coming up for sale on here. It makes the engine feel more responsive, I don't know about noise though, as I've got a custom exhaust which improves the noise...but overall love the ITG over standard filters...plus, with them being pretty much fit and forget there's no issue with it. :)

I'm in Shrewsbury, my girlfriend is based in nearby Condover. You don't happen to have a private plate do you... **CUP?

Re the filter, this evening I suggested to my girl that a panel filter might be best but she wants the noise of the induction kit on hers! Which is all good as long as she doesn't end up losing any power :S

Cheers

I had this issue when looking for induction kit vs panel filter. After reading on the forum decided to get ITG panel filter and pleased I did. Dont know if its the imagination but sounds a little louder but not much at all, again feels more responsive but could just be me!

Didnt fancy the risk of loosing a couple of my bhp through sucking hot air into cylinders using an induction kit, i'm sure i lost power on my old Clio Maxim S too.

Found K-tec best place and delivered nxt day so very impressed!

No mate...just a standard 53 Reg car!

Kully has private plate with CUP on it tho' and there is a bloke somewhere near Wolves with an inferno 182 Cup with *CUP on their reg too.

Am tempted...but CUP is too one car orientated! (Well, the 197 Cup as well when its out, the 182 Cup and the 172Cup!)

What you doing next Sunday? Fancy a trip up to Barmouth? If so you can hear my car, although its got the ITG panel filter, but a different exhaust sounds better than standard!...

You will lose a couple of BHp with an induction kit on...it seems that the standard airbox is best for the engine...but if you get a decent induction kit, you will gain a more drivable car, and the 4K 'kick' won't be as noticeable with the induction kit on as it will pull more freely through the entire rev range.

Thread for trip to Barmouth is here... http://www.cliosport.net/forum/showthread.php?t=215934

If you want more induction noise from a panel filter you need to remove the Acoustic valve. This was put on the car by renault to meet EU regs for engine noise. All this does is quieten down the noise by closing a valve at certain revs. It is located under the nearside wheel arch (under wheel arch liner). Here is what i did to remove it...

Remove wheel
put car on axle stand
remove wheel arch lining (3 hex screws)
You will now see the horns and above those the acoustic valve.
remove the grey plug from it.
Undo the bolt from the bracket. (17mm socket & extension)
Remove the acoustic valve (the part at the end of the pipe, simply pull it off)
At this point you could add a cold air feed (from fog light ???) to the remaining part of the pipe.
Tape up the plug with electrical tape and secure out of the way
Put the bracket back on to secure the horns.
Put the wheel arch liner back on
wheel back on...

A simple 15 minutes job that will put a smile on your face everytime you put your foot down!
