Quite a lot done this weekend, so a quick overview of my efforts - rather pleased with myself as changing suspension on a Golf Mk5 seems considerably more in depth than the clios!! Although i did the necessary research, printed off some guides and most importantly, bought the proper tools for the job (strut spreader tool, etc). Also got to use the impact gun that mum & dad bought me for my birthday at last.
Firstly, a before photo. The last time a sponge touched the car was back in July, although im sure you would never have guessed.
Then went over to Sarah's parents house, jacked it up and essentially made a bit of a mess everywhere
Once jacked up, i was faced with a rather old, dirty spring/damper/top mount/ARB droplink with circa 102k miles on it.
Needless to say, the bolts holding this lot on were rather tight, so i was glad off the breaker bar/impact gun/rubber mallet combo. So after a little bit of swearing, cuts & bruises i was faced with something rather prettier and considerably less knackered & rattly.
I then moved onto the other side, which as per usual took half the time of the first side as i actually knew what i was doing now!! Only issue was that the guide that i was following was for a pauper spec Gti, without Xenons, so when i put all of my body weight on the hub/wishbone to slide the damper out, the xenon adjuster that connects to the wishbone pulled apart :dapprove: ive sorta fixed it with duct tape, but im pretty sure im blinding everyone in front now. Best fix that really ....
Rears were much much simply than the fronts, & you dont even need access to the boot as per the clio's. I also remembered the xenon adjuster this time, so no more breakages!! No pics of before, but after looked like this:
Now being an old f4rt, i didnt really want it any lower than before - i bought the AP's as they considerably cheaper than buying new standard stuff - so set it to minimum lows on the rear, then adjusted the fronts to match. No doubt it will all settle a bit this week so i'll make any necessary adjustments next weekend. I think at the moment, its about 15mm lower than standard (R32's being lower than Gti's already, so perhaps 30mm over a normal golf?).
So, some before/after shots of the 'arch gap' - note i have about 3 ton of tools/parts in the before photo, so the rear up is already quite low:
And some of the full car:
And after pressure washing it last night. Too cold/lazy to get the sponge out, but it does look slightly more presentable
Still need to change the front inner wishbone bush to the Powerflex one and the rear to the Whiteline anti-lift kit, but the difference in handling is already quite noticeable. Car corners a lot flatter and has that lovely 'lowered' feel about it. The ride quality is certainly no worse than standard, which is exactly what i wanted, & part of the reason for getting the more 'soft' AP's instead of more handling focussed Bilstein B14/H&R's (other reason was price).
I'll be fitting a Whiteline rear ARB at some point anyway so that will be the final piece in the jigsaw. Looking at those photos, i also think the passenger side is slightly lower than the drivers at the moment so will need to adjust accordingly.
Anyways, hope you like my boring, understeer led, overweight, german fuel guzzler. Its probably the best overall car ive owned
