RB, too good to turbo?

Was talking to a friend last night about doing a turbo conversion, or setting my sights on going down the turbo route. It's something that has bugged me for over a year, having had relatively quick R5 GT Turbos back in the day I've always missed turbo power, the torque.

Anyway, his reply was "Your Clio is far too good to do that" to which in some ways I agree, it can only go 2 ways.

It could make the car 'epic' OR completely ruin what was once a half decent 182 with potential inferno of flamage from people.

I do have a potential donor in mind if I don't use the RB, but this means if I carry out the turbo project I'd have to sell the RB to fund the next step. If i did turbo the RB I'd have to either save for the kit or collate the parts over many months and months, then take it off the road to do the conversion.

Too many scenarios and thoughts going through my mind

Do it. I can't see how it would be ruining it, it's making one of the best cars on here better.

Don't worry about some forum geeks ;)

I know what he means and where you are coming from

cant you just go back and buy a cheap R5 GTT and do it all again. I know they are 90% gash cars but so much fun. I have had 2! If you waste your time and money on this at least you arnt pulling a nice RB apart !

Why don't you part ex the RB against my 172, i'll keep the RB as is and you can do whatever you want to the 172! done!

Pulling a RB apart? He's not butchering the thing, just adding to it.

Do it! I'd love to do something daft like itb's or supercharge mine eventually. But I doubt it will ever happen :(

Do it.

Although i dont see how you can ruin it by adding to the engine, if youre worried about ruining something along the way Why dont you buy a f4r, turbo it. Make sure it's running fine and then dip it in the rb and sell the standard f4r?

Just a thought

Its an option, I'm mulling over the Engine Dynamics conversion kit as pound for pound when you add up the parts list (new parts) it might not be far off their all in price. I don't have a problem fitting the kit, I guess just thinking of how to finance it without credit. There's a 172 Cup knocking about at a decent price that could be the base of the project, sell the RB and probably have the funds straight off to buy the ED kit

That sounds like a good plan... Although if it were me I wouldn't be able to bring myself to chop in a mint rb 182 for a 172cup. Is your car ff or cup?

It's a Clio. Do it! FLOL @ too good!

Though, if it were me, I'd rather sell & put the money towards a better car - resale value FTW.

I don't get this thread, you want to do a turbo conversion on a clio sport right? You have a clio sport right? You have found a resonable priced kit you can afford right? Looks like you sir have all the ingredients to build a boosted clio so why go to the trouble of buying another clio. You own your car so you can do as you please with it, no matter what the colour. I don't see how you can be ruining it?

You wouldn't be ruining it at all as long as it's done right etc.

Personally I'd buy a ph1 and turbo that purely because it's cheaper to buy so you're instantly adding money to the turbo fund pot by selling the 182.

Thats another option but each to there own an I can see why the lad wants to do it, boosted clios are fun. Plus were all different, thats what makes the world interesting

Do it. Then sell it a month later expecting 8k, then it'll be 7 no offers. Then 6.5k, i'd rather keep it than let it go for less.

6k. Needs to go have no space, new car/unicorn etc.

5k consider offers.

Sell for 4k. Hth.

I'd personally buy a new car. I have never seen the point turbocharging/supercharging a 1*2.

I'm doing it. I only have a small collection of parts so far. I can't see a better colour to do it to Rbt ftw

just do it, keep all standard bits, swap back come sale time and sell the turbo bits on for similar money to what you paid, that would be my plan.

What turbo and ECU are you going for? To me they are the items that will cost the most.... Unless they can be sourced 2nd hand in decent working order.

The down pipe and manifold can be bought from ED
FMIC and pipe work potentially E Bay
Can source the spark plugs, sensor, drain feeds.

Im not jumping into this lightly, I'm trying to work out absolutely everything to see whether I can do this. Doing it on the RB, doing it to another Clio... Or staying with what I have

For the cost which is what 3500 or so I'd be buying a mint 5 gt turbo rather than messing with the Clio

Do it! If u sell it u dnt have a nice Rb 182 if u turbo it and it goes wrong, fix it and u still have a nice Rb 182 if it goes good u have an amazing Rb 182!!!!

Manifold and downpipe are coming from abroad. Ktec link pipe. Fmic will be from eBay with a length of pipe and random bends. Once that arrives I'll look into what's next. No doubt the turbo will be eBay whether genuine or not. Ktec do the oil feed/return. As for ecu I have no idea. I no it won't be cheap. Iv subscribed to a few turbo builds on here. There is quite a good 172 turbo being done with lots of info

Hardly changing it, worst case the engine goes bang and you change that. Its only a blue clio.

What I love about my 182 is that it's a relatively large normally aspirated engine. It has great throttle response and is perfectly balanced with its power to its handling.

I've had numerous turbocharged cars and whilst I do love the turbo rush and torque, I don't like the inevitable torque steer (fwd cars) and turbo lag, albeit I know modern fwd cars have better designed front suspension to reduce this and clever anti lag bits and bobs.

I just really like the balanced feel of hot n/a Clios. More power is nice, but up to legal speeds it's pretty quick anyway.

However, after saying all that, I would like and RS2 manifold to keep the n/a theme, but just add a wee bit more go.

I wouldn't worry about modifying a RB though, if you love the colour and want a turbocharged car, it's surely the way to go.

One thing though, you'll never get your money back selling it as a whole, so either buy an already turbocharged car, or strip the turbo off it when selling and sell the bits separately.

Good luck
