really smokey m.o.t fail on enmissions

just bought a 172 clio on a 2002 plate starts and runs fine plenty of power standard engine, air filter ect but when i took it for the mot emissions where through the roof can any1 help is there a common problem or fix as i have no clue. many thanks

Do you have a lot of sooty, black deposits around the exhaust pipe?

Might not be the same thing, but my 182 had an upstream oxygen sensor fail, where it was simply over-fuelling. I did have a clue though with the sooty tail-pipes and the warning light on the dash.
