rear brake question

  Fiesta ST3
had a issue with the rear brakes now i think i have resolved it but i am unsure how the rear piston works, all 4 pads i got have like little alignment nipples on them now you have to wind the piston back in to allow room for the new pads and the nipple on the pad slots in to the groove on the piston, but does the piston wind its self back out and if so how can it do this if its slotted in with the nipple on the pad ?
i hope this makes sense

IIRC, the thread is attached to the piston, the piston doesn't get wound onto the thread. The handbrake mechanism ratchets the thread out and needs a fixed point to push against which is the piston held by the pad. When you wind it back it in you are screwing it back through the ratchet mechanism.
