Rear Wheel bearings on Mk1 172

  406 passion wagon..

Has anyone had issues of these going?

Renault has spotted that mine needs replacing along with its 36,000 mile service.

They have to change the rear brakes too, for a shocking £380!! Shock horror.

The noise was bloody annoying especailly at Motorway speeds!

Anyone had wheel bearing issues? Funny thing was I first noticed the noise on the way back from FCS last year. This 172 has been very expensive in the first year of my ownership! Cam belt and pulleys changed already too! ARRGHHH

On a lighter note, just renewed my ClioSport membership :D

you dont have to have them done at Renault - there labour rate is extortionate !!! - wheel bearings are £32.39 each - part number 7701463523 and a set of rear pads £35.00 - part number 7701207034. So add 2 bearings up ( £64.78 ) and a set of pads ( £35.00 ) you get £99.78 + vat. So they want £280 for the labour ??

rear pads labour rate is 0.6 ( just over 30 mins ) time ref 3043

rear bearings labour rate is 1.4 ( just under anhour and a half ) time ref 3449

so the labour rate for 2hrs is £280 ??

Even if you chuck in the cost of a new set of discs £85.36 its still a rip off. Personally any garage can fit these parts so in future i would take it to an independant specialist - if you got spurious parts the parts price would be cut by 50%

Hmmm how do they justify their prices! Bloody Renault!

Bit late now as they are now sorting it :-(

Will get the parts etc. done elsewhere next time!

Id still take note of the labour charge codes that have been posted.

Least they wont be able to fob you off!

Ask to speak to a manager if you have no luck with service desk.

My rear wheel bearings are noisy. Took it to the dealer who said it was the tyres! Went to get the tyres changed, they said they were ok. Catch22 as its a company car and I cant just get the tyres changed. Until I do, I cant prove its the bearings. The plan is to hoon about & wear out the tyres as soon as I can :devilish:

Hmmm, I thought it may have been the tyres rubbing as mine are mk2 alloys with slightly different offset, but no rubbing. Has had a tyre change and the noise was still there, so am guessing its the bearings as renault said, shall know more when I drive it tomorrow. Till then I have a no-go 1.4 16V.

The noise is like a groan that gets noiser/quieter as speed increases/decreases.

Have Exaltos now :D

i had both my wheel bearings replaced at 60k.

from the sounds of things they want to change the rear discs as well, which you dont have to. They can be knocked out and your new bearing pressed in.
