Red glow from the cat?

  ITB Hybrid+Cup+Scenic II
On WRC cars and many other cars in different race series (NA and turbo), i've often noticed that the cat has been placed as the last bit in the exhaust system. Apart from providing a really nice red glow at night - what is the benefit of this?

Main reason is that the Exhaust temps are so high (WRC/Turbo) near the engine that the CAT doesnt work as effectivley. Even at the back of the system the temps are 800+degrees and you will see the whole area glowing...

They're running the engine rich to make sure it doesn't run lean, then using the cat to burn off the excess fuel. You can tell the classes that don't have a cat by the flames out the exhaust.

Er not at all.....

The engine mapping is very very precise. Old WRC cars early 90's used to run rich at certian throttle positions and ran rich to cool the exhaust temps in the turbine housing as the early crude anti-lag systems used to melt the turbine wheel.

It was a case of off the throttle r****d the ignition and add lots of fuel. Back on the throttle and bang, big flame and turbo spins up with the back fire and away you go, no lag.

The modern system are much less severe and a lot more sophisticated....!
