I totally agree about the rather pay someone else to do it mentality...I've suprised myself a few times at being reasonably handy with working on stuff, but anything beyond basic servicing I'd rather pay someone to know the jobs been done properly when its my own car!

This is interesting I have to say. I thought about doing this with my GTI, but I think I'll scare myself if I add it up, even though I can't think of anything thats been particularly unreasonable for the age of the car. Just so many little things add up (I think you should exclude tax and insurance though, see it as similar to fuel costs!)

As for the £199 a month 200 deal working out cheaper thus far, at least you own the car and in 2 years time you won't be in the position where you're without a car or your hands forced into the burden of another finance package!

I have been thinking about taking those out TBH. Tax is a constant but insurance can vary for everyone.

Maybe for the next update I'll remove those and recalculate.

Yeah as I see it, fuel tax and insurance are compulsary costs that come with any car.

The other costs will provide an insight onto the kind of maintenance expenses you might encounter with a 11 year old Clio 172.

Btw do you prefer this to the GTI? I sometimes wonder how long I can hold off the swap for...decent GTIs go for more than a tidy PH1!

Sometimes I prefer the GTi. I think it's more fun and probably handled better but then it did have aftermarket suspension and it was a lot lower.

I think the Clio is faster after a point. Certain points I'll floor it and in the Clio I'll be hitting 90 before I'm backing off, whereas in the 106 it was 70ish. At lower speeds there's nothing in it. Thr 106 just feels faster.

The Clio is a nicer place to be, even with the blue dash. It rattles less. I've got air con. No leaking sunroof. Nicer seats and I get zero attention in the Clio. Which is what I wanted.

I'd have had the Ph1 5+ years ago when I bought the GTi but the cost of it was pushing it a bit too much (5.5k vs 4.5k for the GTi) but the killer was the insurance. I wouldn't go back but if my GTi had still been mint and not at the stage where I hated it, I'd probably have kept it.

Few more bits done.

When it went in to have the rear bearing done, they said I needed front and rear pads. Got front discs too as it's good/easier to get it all done at the same time. They also said that I needed CV boots doing as they were fucked.

And as mentioned a few posts back, I've taken out tax/insurance as insurance is totally different depending on lots of things and tax is a constant, so anyone can see what that costs.

Previous total : £2797.25

Discs + Pads = £72
CV Gaitors = £96
2 hours labour = £84

New total : £3049.25

I bought my 172 Cup for £3000 - it came with a set of bucket seats I didn't want so sold them and a few other bits - overall cost £2800

I drove it for 18 months and only did a service costing £80
Insurance was £430 so

18months, nurburgring, 2 track days = £3525 ;)

And the car had eibach sportlines, full k-tec exhaust, filter, brembo discs, ferodo pads etc.. when I bought it :)

I do think it's worth shopping around and shelling out a bit more on a car up front that has everything done to it - cheap cars are usually cheap for a reason

Oh and I'm not talking about 106's - spent over £25k on the quiksilver, and probably did more than £5k on the gti!!

Yeah. Cars are expensive. But it looked in very good condition. The cost is big because it needed the belts service and dephaser first thing, I knew that. Hence it was priced as it was.

Puncture/rad, those things can just happen. Brakes, all cars are going to need those at some stage. It won't need brakes now for aaaaaaaaages because of the miles I do.

If mine last 25k, they'll probably last me 5 years! LOL

They are cheap in a sense but it's all the little things that soon add up. Paying labour because I'm a n00b with a spanner doesn't help my costs.

MOT coming up soon so wanted to get a few bits sorted out. I had two tyres that were low, a s**tty budget on from when I got a puncture and the spare was crap too. So got four T1-Rs. Also got a set of new legal plates. Cheapo jobby on eBay. They'll only go on for the MOT. Then my smaller front one can go back on.

Previous total : £3049.25

T1-R's + balanced/fitted/alignment shizzle = £240
Number plates = £8

£3297.25

Forgot all about this, mainly because I haven't spent anything extra on it.

Sorted insurance. But that doesn't count towards my total.

Had an MOT but it passed that no problem.

Prev total - £3297.25

MOT - £50

New total - £3347.25

I pay £30 for mine.

A little place local to us that specialised in Motorbikes have some new Mechanics there. They're doing mots for £25.

This is my local garage that I know and I've funded their holidays to the Maldives for the last 5 years with my 106, so I know that anything that they can help me out with, they will.

A £25 always makes me worry about how they'll make the money up.
