Replacing Rear Shock Absorber Advice

My car has been into the garage and apparently my drivers side rear shock absorber is goosed.
(Apparently its stiff when the car is raised of the floor and can't be moved were as the passenger side one can be?)
Couple of quick questions.

Do I have to jack the car up or can I literally just undo the two bolts - If so do I just place the axel stand in the usual place?
Do I NEED to use a torque wrench? I dont have one, surley as long as the bolts are nice and tight then its okay...
I have a 182 (non cup) - does it matter which rear shock i buy? Is there a specific one for the cup models?
I dont want anything fancy, or expensive... Will this do the job?

Hi James.
Shocks direct from Renault are only about £30-£40.
I would replace both sides at the same time while you are doing it.
Yes, there are a difference between cup and non-cup shocks so make sure you ask for the non-cup. Its the bolt spacing which is different between the two.

Lee's right and wrong.

The bolt spacing difference is the fronts.

There is cup and non cup rears but you can fit either. The purists will point that the non cup shock will be rate matched to non cup springs. if however you have gone stiffer aftermarket or have fitted cup rear springs you may wish to fit cup rears.

Easy job, probably the easiest shock change you'll do on any car.

Quick guide from memory.

1. remove caps in the boot to show the bolts*, then undo.
2. Jack the rear up at the sill so the rear wheels will hang. ( i changed springs too )
3. Use WD40 on the Bolts.
4. Undo the bolts on the bottom, i had to kick the spanner to start them off..
5. Replace the shocks
6. Put the bolts back in with some grease
7. Make sure spring is aligned correctly.
8. lower the car so the top of the shock is positioned correctly.
9. do the tops up.

This may be wrong, but from memory thats what i did, It took about 3 hours but 2 of those hours was waiting for WD40 to do its job

Had mine done in 10 minutes. Just use an 18" breaker bar on the bottom bolts. Stick a bit of penetrating oil on the day before then an hour before ya do it

Well Yea, But I didn't have any WD40 and this was the first thing i have ever done on a car myself. I had to go buy a Jack and an Axel stand too. Then when i started i found the Bolts wouldn't undo, and I didn't have a long bar just a simple spanner. (I now had all this stuff and a massive socket set).
Can prob do it within 30 mins now ha

Make sure you thoroughly clean the bolts and sockets of any crud, and don't force the bolt back in, I managed to strip the thread on one of mine and had to helicoil it.

The bolt spacing difference is the fronts.

There is cup and non cup rears but you can fit either. The purists will point that the non cup shock will be rate matched to non cup springs. if however you have gone stiffer aftermarket or have fitted cup rear springs you may wish to fit cup rears.

So it doesnt matter if i buy a cup or non cup rear shock then?

Shocks direct from Renault are only about £30-£40.
I would replace both sides at the same time while you are doing it.
Yes, there are a difference between cup and non-cup shocks so make sure you ask for the non-cup. Its the bolt spacing which is different between the two.

Quick guide from memory.

1. remove caps in the boot to show the bolts*, then undo.
2. Jack the rear up at the sill so the rear wheels will hang. ( i changed springs too )
3. Use WD40 on the Bolts.
4. Undo the bolts on the bottom, i had to kick the spanner to start them off..
5. Replace the shocks
6. Put the bolts back in with some grease
7. Make sure spring is aligned correctly.
8. lower the car so the top of the shock is positioned correctly.
9. do the tops up.

This may be wrong, but from memory thats what i did, It took about 3 hours but 2 of those hours was waiting for WD40 to do its job

Cup or non cup.. It's up to you. From a basic.. Will if physically fit question then no it doesn't matter which.

Do I NEED to use a torque wrench? I dont have one, surley as long as the bolts are nice and tight then its okay...

If you have no experience with tools then yes use a torque wrench. You can easily over tighten a bolt especially if you are standing on a breaker bar to re tighten it.

You'd also be mad not to replace both, there not exactly expensive.

If you're only replacing one then you should match it to your other shock so it should be non cup.

Then you should swiftly put the car up for sale and buy an Espace or something because you clearly don't care how it handles.

Actually I owned a 1990 Espace from new, driving it for 450,000 miles before selling it still in driving condition.They handled way better than other comparable people carriers of the time( up to 400 Kgs lighter was a great help), I could dive other cars into roundabouts without any trouble. Anyway, if you cant afford to change both shocks@£33 each, at the same time, you cant really afford the car.

This is unfortunately the nature of owning an ageing performance vehicle.

It's had a good thrashing for some of it's life so naturally s**t gets worn out and needs replacing, sometimes that s**t doesn't care if you're already poor - it will break anyway just to spite you.
