Returning iphone 5, just go to shop? appointment?

My iphone 5 is playing up, it takes ages to connect to calls and around 3 out of 10 times i cant hear the person, i plan on taking it back and hopefully getting an exchange, im going to lakeside on saturday with the mrs (who is buying a 4s) can i talk to someone there and then? ive seen people say they have made appointments before ?

as above make an appointment if there's some free, last time mine broke the warranty ran out the next day so was waiting around for 4 hours waiting for an appointment.

Not strictly true, ive been seen for both my MacBook and my iPhone without appointments at Trafford Centre Apple store.
