Rob_SRi Monaco 172 Project Thread

  Stealth 438'd 182
Hi all :)

So.. Yesterday I made the return to Clio Sport ownership and god it feels good! :)

you may remember my black 182..

which was involved in a high speed head on collision with a drug dealer being chased by traffic police in Birmingham city centre almost exactly 2 years ago (Jan 15th 2013). I broke my collarbone and was badly brusied all over, shaken and ended up in hospital not being able to move for a few days whilst my pride and joy ended up... well... in a scrap yard. The modifications to the car and the way it held up in the crash definitely meant the injuries were substantially less and in no way life threatening - much to the surprise of the emergency services (who I must say were absolutely bloody brilliant.)

however when I had recovered I managed to get myself a new job and with that came a new project.. a non turbo MKIV Supra (project thread also on here) which was in a pretty shitty state!..

I tidied, modified and single turbo'd it and it is currently running around 550BHP and looks like a different car :D however.. this is no good as a daily driver.. and tbh I dont want to run up the milage or risk it getting scratched or dented.. (this was my justification to myself for getting this 172 ;) )

I have missed my 182 since the crash.. It was cammed, mapped, caged and felt amazingly nimble to drive whilst still being almost practical so when this came up at a brilliant price I messaged the seller at once.

so a bit about the car..

Its a Monaco blue 172 and had been owned by and cared for by Jon (Mutley172) for the past 9 years.. he also has a 197 F1 another Clio and just bought a Clubman S too.. so the 172 wasn't getting the use or the love that it used too.. so instead of keeping it he decided to sell it on for an absolute bargain!

(Jon if you're reading thanks again for the cup of tea, wireless password and friendly welcome by the way! was good to meet you!)

with the purchase of his 197 the 172 had become the dog car and the daily so it had started to become a bit of a state inside and I think it will need a bit of work mechanically too belts and dephaser are due but overall and most importantly it has potential :)

Im not going to kid myself by saying im not going to spend time and money restoring this car..

so.. here begins my Monaco 172 thread.. Just don't tell the Mrs... ;)

First port of call is going to be clean down, clay, paint correction detail, and wax.. Interior detail also soon.. although a quick initial go is needed first!

Quick pass with the machine polisher revealed the paint underneath this.. This was after one set so I reckon I can make this car look brand new with some time :D

He helped clean it too, don't forget this haha. Just don't tell anyone I can hoover okay.

I'm glad I've featured in your progress thread though. We've had a lot of these 'car shopping roadtrips' lately ;)

I just came looking for this, just updated my supra thread and made mention that you had bought this and as a result it was now on the cards for me too ;)

Still loads more to go :( the paint is so badly marked its flat and hardly even reflecting looks like it was cleaned with a Brillo pad! But it's coming out brilliantly

As you can see here!

Headlights were badly marked as they all tend to go so I restored them using the machine polisher and a heavy cutting compound

Yeah it was certainly an experience! Glad the clio held up so well in a smash!

I don't really tend to do other people's cars it's just a hobby for me really, I've done a few friends of friends and that kind of thing before and charged ~£120.. I can get a car done in a day if I start early enough but it is a whole days work to get a decent correction.

  Stealth 438'd 182
Both the Supra and previous BG are / were epic so I'll keep an the on this :)

Good work chap!

Cheers :) won't be doing much other than a good clean and little to start as it needs belts and dephaser doing and some fixing up before anything interesting can happen, plus tax insurance etc has killed me financially!

Plan is belts and dephaser at the end of the month and then it's MOT is due so will need to get anything required sorted..

Going to jack it up at the weekend and have a good poke around underneath

That rear bumper was such a state, was looking forward to seeing how well it would come up

Just needs your new light to finish it off ;)

Cracking work again dude. What pads and Polish combo are you using? And is that a work lamp you're using to spot the swirls? I'm tempted to start on mine now after seeing you tackling it in this weather.

Out of curiosity, what products (leveling fluid, pads, etc) have you used?

cheers mate..

its had autobrite magifoam, and then washed with boggo fairy liquid to strip back any old crap on the paint.. its a good degreaser ;) followed by AG Tar remover where needed. I would usually clay it too but i didnt have one to hand.

Im using a DAS6 Pro with Chem guys hexlogic pads orange cutting and a black finishing, meguiars microfibre compound and a menzerna finishing polish, Chem guys blacklight glaze and dodo juice blue velvet wax.

The meguiars compound is ace..its requiring a few passes but diminishes well and there is very little need to finish it!

the lamp is a 500w halogen work lamp which is doing the job nicely

Everytime I check in here there's yet another picture of me haha.
Looking great, this thread shows how the small, relatively cheap touches can make a huge difference.

Powerflex dogbone mount ordered from KAM Racing to cure an annoying knock..

Turinis are being collected Monday

And new numberplates from fancyplates are on order :D

Quick one of the cup spoiler test fit.. It is the wrong colour so will be having that sprayed along with the rear bumper to get rid of the scuff mark
