Samsung LCD picture colours bit odd

  E39 530i
The image quality on my new LCD tv is a bit odd! colours just dont seem to be right. White is to white and Blacks just not black. Is there anything i can do apart from changing the settings on my tv which seem to do very little or not much??

lcd will never look as good as a crt tube if thats what your used to.

...erm, thats only really true on SD tv broadcasts. You should see a big improvement on SD dvd (if through a good source, such as RGB) and of course HD stuff. The set should have some pre-set picture modes, such as movie, tv etc. Have you tried those?

Better in all areas bar scaleability?

CRT may be better in some areas, but they are fundamentally flawed in most, geomentry problems, size issues (the screen is always about 1" smaller than advertised) due to the frame around the screen, screen glare and flicker (whereas LCD images are 'painted' - no flicker) power consumption - the average CRT uses 250% more power, and the images as a whole are nowhere near as sharp etc etc...

A lot of people hark on about how good CRT is, but give me LCD / plasma any day!

tried the picture modes but cant really see that big of a change. i think if i go hd ill see a big difference.

CRT's do not have geomatry problems.

Size issues ? because they used to advertise the tube size not the visible screen size ? and that they all changed that about 5 years ago to advertise actual visible screen size ?

LCD's are 'painted' aswell ever heard of a refresh rate when connected to a PC.. or the fact that TV is 25FPS ? You do realise that even most of your old old 14" CRT computer monitors were capable of HD resolutions..

Since when has power consumption got anything to do with image quality ? but just for the record..

32" LCD = ~200W operational
32" CRT = ~160W operational

I think you will find that CRT images are sharper than both plasma + LCD they still use CRT's in operating theatres because of the image clarity/resolution..

oh by the way.. just for the record I own a 42" Pansonic Veira plasma..

Like I said, CRT doesnt scale well, dont look as pretty and you can exactly hang them on the wall.

At the risk of sounding really boring, CRTs do have geometry problems - whereas LCDs are free from geometric image distortions at the screen edges because they are a flat matrix display where every pixel is active. CRTs are subject to peripheral distortion of the image as the electron beam becomes progressively more tangential to the monitor screen phosphors at the edges, hence CRT screens typically have a black deadspace around them. These improvements in the quality of the visual image with LCDs are thought to be responsible for the improvements in visual performance.

As for the power consumption, well thats just an added benefit when you play on your Xbox 360 as much as I do, I save a packet in electricy at the end of the year!

Jimmy - what source are you using? Is this through all sources? (RGB scart, normal scart, component etc)

...oh, for the record, the average LCD uses less than a third as much power than the same size equivalent CRT, and produces much less heat. For example, a 15" LCD uses when operational, approx 25 watts and approx 3 on standby, whereas a similar sized CRT will use about 80 watts and about 5 on standby. KDFs figures are not relevent to usuage and actual unit by unit power consumption (an electrician would be able to explain better), but this is well off topic now!

CRT can and does suffer from gemoetry problems, espeicially with large widescreen sets.

Generally, LCD offers less contrast and poorer black levels than plasma, but CRT is better than both in this area.

Ignor what the image looks like in the shops, unless your lounge is as big & brightly lit.

Lcd always looks better in the shops, but worse in real life in your home ;)
