Scott's Super Clean PH1 172 Project Thread

  Many.
Ouchie, they aren't cheap either IIRC?

At least it'll be spot on and you won't be messing with the head ever again.

Coming on well though!

Could be lots of short trips, Oil not getting up to temperature?

You will love it when you get it back :race:

I think i said on the phone that i thought the tappets needed sorting, although im sure the dephaser needed to be replaced but it didnt sound like that kind of noise.

Yes it did a few short trips in my time and from each MOT it had only done about 5k max per year.

Dropped off your head at the machine shop to have the new guides fitted, Pick it up on Friday morning were i will break out the carbides

Andrews cracking on with the head but im still waiting for the valves to come into the country, fingers crossed sometime next week.

Once its back to me i can make a start on getting it all fitted back, engine bits should be back from the powder coaters at the end of next week and i'm dropping the nuts and bolts off the the metal platers tomo.

Im hoping to get it back on the road for the good weather, ive still got to get my coilovers ordered from Mick, get the wheel alingment done by Mark Fish and then ive got to get it mapped. I would love to take it to Paul at RS Tuning but i would have to get it trailered some how.

Cam wise ive got 421's, 182 manifold and a de-cat. Andrew's also re-porting the inlets as they wern't good enough for his liking.

Similar spec to my 421'd engine I had previously then! Should make good power :)

Cheers mate, hope so.

With the head being done im hoping for more torque, PH1 Tom has the same spec but his got the Piper cams and a sports cat.
His car made 185 bhp and 175 lbs ft at RS Tuning.

Oh im also fitting ARP rod bolts so it can rev a little more.

Pants about the valves, but if you're doing a job it's worth doing properly :)

Looking forward to seeing this 421d :)

Yes mate, it is. Extra money i didn't want to spend tbh. :dapprove:

On the up side though im getting excited like a 5 year old at christmas. :D

Booked 2 days off of work to try and get a few bits done, i had to take 2 bags of bolts to platers and poped to the powder coaters to see what colours they have for my inlet manifolds.

Tryed fitting the 182 manifold before i heat wrap it but the flange on the end hits the hoop of the anti roll bar, ill have to drop it off its mounts tomo or drop the back of the sub frame.

Next up i want to give the block a lick of paint, so i removed the plastic water pipe to give that a clean and to get better access to the engine.
Id also bought a new O ring seal for the end of the pipe so i needed to replace that.

Not in to bad condition but a bit of old oil along the lower parts which i guess is from oil filter changes.

Cleaning stuff doing its job.

Cheers Andrew. :approve:

This afternoon i got a call from the powder coaters, my bits where all one.

I was shocked as its only been a few days, anyway collected my 12 parts.

I had them done in the same colour as the other sliver bits on the car which is a sliver which looks light grey in some lights but has a very small metalic.

Anyway its epic. :D

Gave the block a paint today, just gave it a coat of this.

It looks like gloss but it was still wet when i took this picture.

Also fitted the 182 exhaust manifold, bit of a pain in the ass even with the head off.

I had to remove the anti roll bar and the starter motor, but its in.

I then removed it so that i could wrap it in the heat wrap which i will do tomo.

More awesomeness.

Block looks good, better than some lary colour (I know thats not your style though!), Powdercoat looks great too, such a teese!

Thanks alot Alex, the colour looks alot betting in the day light tbh.

f**k you and your awesomeness Scott :)

Will always love this.

Thanks mate, how's your's coming on?

When is its approx debut outing once its all back together Scott?

Don't know yet dude, it will be nice to have it back together for the end of March/mid of April.

Its then got to be trailered to Mark Fish for wheel alginment then to Mike Woodford for mapping, once its all up and running it will be used as long as there is no rain. :D

That rocker looks ace!

Thanks Arran, looks lots better in the flesh. My phone pictures don't do it any justice tbh.

Very nice Scott! :approve:

Cheers Tom, its getting there.

Cheers Dan, i do it to relax plus i don't have a life. :(

Brilliant work as ever.

Cheers fella, what's next for your's?

You need more patience! Post it to me, I'll wrap it and send it back.

Thanks for the kind offer mate, id had a few beer's at the time so wasn't one of my better idea's to start wraping a manifold. flol

I don't blame you honestly!

If you decide to not wrap it, paint it with BBQ paint.

As above mate plus it has cost me quite alot to buy, never give in. ;)

This is is how I felt after 5 minutes! But soldiered on, if not you could try zircotec coating.

Yep had another go this morning, lots better. But yes its a bit of a job to get right.

Had another crack as wrapping the manifold this morning, couldn't get on with the stainless steel tie wraps they just didn't seem to lock up tight enough.

I will have to give Demon Tweeks a call tomo and see what they say, i did want AlexW suggested and used plastic tie wraps to hold the ends.
Cheers dude it worked a treat. :approve:

Here is a little sneek at what i have done so far, it takes ages to get nice and tight and evenly wrapped.

But i think its come out quite well. :)
