Silverstone F1 Testing Pics

Have been at Silverstone the last 2 days watching the testing. Most of the drivers were out apart from Hamilton! :(

I think Massa was putting down the best time when I left so the GP will be interesting next weekend.

Managed to borrow a 70-200 F4L lens which still wasn't long enough but i got a few decent shots out of the 700 i took!!!!!

All in all, was a great few days although I cant hear much now and look like a beetroot! :approve:

I went up today - no action shots but managed to get myself in some pretty good places and met SEVEN of the drivers!!

I managed to meet:
Nico Rosberg - chatted to him for a few mins and signed some stuff
Nelson Piquet Jnr - quick chat and autograph
Felipe Massa - Got his autograph
Robert Kubica - He told me he was in a hurry but then got his autograph!
Heikki Kovalainen - Got his autograph. I felt a bit sorry for him - he got mobbed!
Sebastian Vettel - Said hello and got his autograph
Mark Webber - Said hello and got his autograph

I'm really tempted to go up again tomorrow as Lewis and Fernando will both be there but given how busy it was today without them, I think tomorrow will be mental... Roll on the BGP next week :D

nice pics buddy. i was thinking about going but wasnt sure if it would be boring with massive periods of no action on the circuit. what was it like

Testing hasn't been as good since they introduced the one car per team rule...

There were cars out on track most of the day with a few stopped session periods towards the end of the day.

Thing is, and bear in mind I would class myself as a big F1 fan, watching cars testing just isn't much fun. If you want to see F1 cars racing then watch them race! Quali is alright because you've got the tension and atmosphere but when you're sitting in the grandstands watching testing, you have no idea who is doing what, what settings they are trying, how much fuel they are carrying and what the relative lap speeds are...

For me, testing is a fantastic day out but it is all about stalking the drivers! If you're not likely to get near an F1 car at a race this year though, then I can see the appeal but I would urge you to get yourself in somehow on raceday next Sunday insead!

Awesome pics, see what a telephoto lens can do for you! Second pic is the winner imo, excellent. I had no idea you could get pictures that good at Silverstone actually, always been put off going but you've shown me the way. Think I might do the Britcar 24hr this year.

Was it really busy? Was tempted but heard it was a sell-out, which sounded a bit odd. Hopefully next year they can afford to open more of the circuit up if it's that popular.

It was only a sell out because they don't sell many tickets!

Luffield A and pitstraight grandstands were open but not even 10% occupancy... If you're good with a camera its a great time to go because you can move yourself around the circuit for different shots with relative ease.

LOL cheers bud. I wasnt joking no! It rained on the 2nd day but i have only got through the first 300 pics........400 to go!!! lol

We werent allowed in pitstraight grandstands?!?!? Couldnt get round. Were only allowedo n the last 3/4 corners!

Defo need to get myself a decent telephoto now though. 200 was enough for a few corners but could do with a 300 and alot of people were using 400 and 500mm lenses that were about 10foot long! lol

They didnt open much up at all to the public and you need a special pass to get in to most places. The bits that were open were busy but there was still plenty of room to move wherever you wanted and certainly was no where near crowded!

Pit to car data telemetry is always possible, thats the aeriel on top of the chassis forward of the driver.

The tube on top is a pitot tube to allow the measurement of free stream dynamic (and possibly static) air pressure. Usually for CFD correlation and validation purposes. Cars as standard run one on the nose of the car as allowed by regulation but that can be affected by the turbulence caused by the front wing. For testing they can mount in the free flow above the airbox. The higher the tube the better. :approve:

Very interesting. I'm an aerospace engineer student and need some info for my dissertation. Done alot of work on CFD and dynamic pressure.

All it is basically is when those hollow tubes (curved to be inline with the air flow) have air try to flow into them it causes an increase in pressure at that point, this pressure is monitored (via strain gauge), this then can be translated into air speed. Mainly because its all very well having wheel sensors for vehicle speed but for cfd its interesting to see the fluxtuations and differences in actual air speed due to atmospheric condition, wind etc. Thats obviously the important thing to know if your aero is going to work properly.

Hello there dom. Didn't know you were staying on for a masters this year. Good luck to you. I won't be able to stand another year.

Has Williams offered you a job for when you finish?

Oh and you obviously listen to dan much more than I did. lol I spent more time looking out of the window in aero.

It was mathematical simulations i did, mainly in relation to the drivetrain. But required some control stuff for validation. Had some CFD in my dissertation so it was fresh in my mind lol.:eek:

Edit - P.S Schweppy, CFD is really good area to get into to get an F1 job. Most teams are now recruiting for CFD engineers at the moment and at least 3 offer CFD placements. A friend who specialised in Aero has just walked straight into a job with Honda F1 as CFD engineer.
