Then spend your change out the budget on some alloys etc and you've got a nice cheap first car

Get some insurance quotes, basically i'd say buy the one you like the most. My first car was a SEAT Marbella which was a laughable site, but because it weighed as much as a tin can it wiped the floor with my mates cars and was cheaper to insure. Also, bare in mind that you might get bored of the lack of power when you've got your first year of no claims (all been well) and want to upgrade to a 1.4/1.6 or the like so personnally i wouldn't go too overboard on your first car.
