Started on my 172 CUP



Recently joined the forum and after getting married I haven't had chance to do much apart from new wheels and tyres and wrap the door rubbing strips in carbon.

I have my own plotter and vinyl just struggling to find the actual file. Anybody got any links to it? Happy to pay
 
Update on this.

Ive currently been gathering parts to start on the car.

Currently have :

New rear discs and pads (G172) :approve:
original cup turinis (will be re furbed by Russ at midlands car care shortly)
vmaxx coilovers
front and rear strut braces
new engine cover
new filters and oil
new leads
new coil pack


ive also bought myself a powder coating set up and new compressor and shot blast cabinet for When I start stripping the car down.

Ill get get some pics of my workshop and what the car looks like at the minute.

Not to bad overall. Some bad scratches and a few dents but came up pretty well

Had to do something about the steelies. So I got on eBay and found a set of 172 sport wheels for the time being. They were clean but I wasn't happy with the finish so I had them fully stripped dipped and powder coated. Fitted them and made the car look smarter.

I also wrapped the side mouldings to see what I thought. Still not sure on these.
Think I might get them re sprayed the original blue.

Got my turinis fitted on the car.

As you can see they need quite a bit of work! Also they are fitted with a worrying budget brand tyre. I certainly wouldn't drive it with them on.


195 45 16 recommendations are welcome by the way.




This is what the carbon wrapped trim looks like for now. I'm not sure whether to keep it like this or get them resprayed the original colour.

Cleaned up nice mate

I'd personally colour code the side strips and get the turinis done in the brightest silver they have

Tyres wise the contisports contact they come with are decent and the Michelin pilot exaltos 2 are very good tyres ime.
There's a tyre thread stickied at the top of tyres, brakes section. Get a coffee and have a read through , plenty of options and feedback in there

I have Yokohama S drive because they are cheap. In the wet they do a job - you should drive to the conditions anyway and in the dry they are quite good. Don't make too much noise but after a trackday and 400 miles they are a bit fecked..

For £50 quid a corner I can't see you getting much better value. I'd rather screw them then PS3's or Contis. Something a bit more grippy for track next though

im getting the wheels bright silver.

I got my Turinis refurbed recently, and the guy who quoted me said that the colour was called 'glitter silver'. I'm not sure whether that's the OEM name for paint or not, but it perfectly matches the original colour on the centre caps :)

Had a couple of days off and had chance to get a bit more done in the garage and start some bits on the car.


Also treated myself to 2 new jacks. Got them for a bargain price of £48 each!


They are 3t lift and a sturdy piece compared to your halfords type.


Lift stupidly high as well

I'm starting by stripping the arches and running gear as I want to clean everything up and paint what I can and powdercoat the rest.

As you can see it's needing a good clean and paint.


Calipers will be getting stripped blasted and powder coated then rebuilt with new seals etc as the rears are sticking slightly.




Stripped the inner arch lining so I can get inside the full arch to paint.


Couldn't believe how much crap was behind it!

Had no idea what it was but now know it's a carbon canister purge valve. Catches fuel vapours


Unfortunately it's cracked and damaged though so a new one will be needed:wall:




Looks like I've got an oil leak somewhere as well.

Luckily it's booked in for cam belt, aux belt, tensioner and water pump in March so should be able to diagnose this at the same time.


The rears are in pretty much the same condition and will need the same treatment

We have booked a holiday so will be just doing jobs on the car that don't involve much cost. More just labour and stripping parts :thumb:

Update 9/1/14


Was at my friends workshop yesterday and stripped my coilovers.


The night before I soaked them both in penetrant/ release agent


As you can see they are fairly rough in the threads

Got them stripped fairly easily due to the fluid doing its job

I used a drill and a wire wheel to clean up the threads and it worked a treat to get the corrosion out the threads

For the bottom of the unit I will be taping up the seals and then putting them in the shot blast cabinet to clean up before I paint them.


I also took some pictures of what the guys in the workshop are working on because I thought you all might like it b:thumb:

It's the owners M3 that is undergoing a full underbody rebuild and restore


New suspension, bushes, re painted etc. looks amazing so far.

Saw this on detailing world!

They're not the genuine Renault Turinis just to let you know, they're aftermarket ones - no big deal unless you want to fit Renault caps.

Went to my local halfords and Lidl today to get some more bits to carry on with the car


Socket set was a bargain at £8 and the drill was £14.99


Also picked up an impact driver because there was no way the brake disc retaining screws we're coming out without it :doublesho

The hubs are fairly rough, will need to strip these and get them professionally shot blasted as they are a bit far gone for mine.

Question I need opinions on is what colour do I do the arches? Do I stick with the blue or go for a hammer it's black then stonechip over it? Can't decide!

Decided to clean and paint the coilovers, taped them and managed to fit them in my cabinet. Made a big difference to the finish after shot blasting them.

Once I'd done both I did two coats of white primer and heated them to dry

Two coats of silver followed by three coats of lacquer and I'm pleased with the finish. :thumb:

After doing the shockers I carried on stripping the NSF


Got the wing off after taking the headlight out and one side of the bumper off oh and the bloody side skirt! The skirts do need painting though so would have come off anyway.

Got the hub and driveshaft out as well. No idea how to get the 30 mm nut off the end without the shaft turning?

A closer look shows that the shaft has had a boot off a while and the grease is massively contaminated. X2 new ones of these as well!

One plus point is that someone has power flexed the anti roll bar

Got a can of stonechip to give it all some good protection then some gloss black to cover it all.


Also got front shocker and bottom arm off.

Finally got some paint on the car yesterday. Was chucking it down so seemed an ideal day to do it.


This was before I did the wire wheeling on the last parts of rust

Looks a lot fresher and will hopefully stop any rust developing in the future.


Going to Newark on Saturday to get all the bits I need from the car that's being broken


Managed to get a lot of the items I need which are in better condition than what's on the car currently.


Rear bumper
Front fog lights and surrounds
Driveshafts
Mirror covers
And a lot more, will update within pics.

Fantastic work mate,great to see a cup getting the love it deserves. Admire people like yourself transforming a run down car into an eventual show and shine candidate. looks like your into your cup as much as I am into mine, must admit I do find myself detailing the car as much as anything else haha

Got some great bits!

After taking the coil pack off I noticed its split in two places and looks like rust which can only mean it's had water in it!! This might explain why it was running like crap! :wall:

I've ordered my bottom arm powerflex bushes and not far off being ready to put everything back together.


Shot blasted the bare arm ready to paint and put the bushes in

Then finished in gloss black, looks a hell of a lot better.


Finished wire wheeling the inlet manifold as well so thought I'd paint it at the same time.

Finished it with the wheel silver to freshen it up.


Got a good condition engine cover as mine was missing. Needs a clean but will look good over the painted manifold.

Well today was new parts day, much more fun than stripping down :lol:


Track rod end, the actual rod itself because it's so badly corroded, powerflex bushes, new brake line and the newer driveshaft.

First thing was to remove the steering rod so pulled the rubber boot off

Not sure how free the little ball joint should be on the shaft but it was slack as hell!


Nice surprise though is the steering rack bushes have already been done with the powerflex ones.

I needed the original boot from the shaft to put on my new shaft but as you can see the threads are massively corroded!

There wasn't a chance these we're coming off so out came the hacksaw!

Put onto the new shaft to re fit to the rack, can't fit it yet as will need a new nut to hold the track rod end.
