Got a few parts this week to move the car in the right direction. First part was a gearbox spacer. Even though the VW Passat bell housing pattern matches the Audi S4's engine block, it never quite went all the way home last week. After a bit of research it turns out that Audi make a few spacers of different thicknesses and my local VAG specialist, VRS, came to the rescue to supply one. Problem solved and now I just require some longer dowels. While I was there I picked up a pair of VW/Audi driveshafts to give me an idea of what needs doing. They are something I've been worried about since the day I planned the conversion. Not because I'd struggle getting some but because the angle they might sit at in relation to the gearbox and hubs. This is due to the diff sitting slightly behind the rear wheels centreline. If its too much, it will create big friction losses in the cv joint nod eventually destroy them. Thankfully, although not perfect its not half as bad as I thought it might be. A quick measurement shows they are pointing about 7-8 degrees forward. Baring in mind the engine needs to go a little further forward and the wheels a little further back via adjustable suspension, fingers crossed I can reduce it even more so its not worth thinking about. Also to my surprise, the VW/Audi shafts nearly fit to the Renault hubs. Although the chances are very slim, I might be able use pretty much a standard Audi part and come up with something at the hub end to mate to Renault. If not, it will be the typical custom shaft route.
