Steering warning light on and no power steering 1.2 16v

My girlfriends 1.2 seems to have an intermittant fault with the powersteering, I went to use it earlier and the steering light came on and there was no power steering.
This happened once before so I changed the battery and it was ok again for a while. Im thinking it could be the alternator but then surely the battery light would be on? Im guessing it could also be a motor fault? Has anybody come accross this before?

get it on a diagnostic system, could be a number of things.

Its been on the clip, showed signs of low voltage, hence why I changed the battery..
Anything obvious I should check Mike before I take it in again?

well its unlikely to be the battery or alternator, you have changed the battery and I take it you have no starting problems linked to poor battery voltage, so cant suggest anything.

Always starts on the button, Im guessing its the steering motor up the creek then, will get it put on the diagnostic.
