Strange parts found on PH1 172.....

​On both sides of the car in-between where the two arms of the wishbones connect to the chassis there are two upturned triangles of metal bolted to the chassis. I have taken them off because they were rusty and didn't seem to do anything.

They weren't supporting anything, or providing protection for anything, so just wondering what they originally could have been for??

They are part of the subframe. Now you just have holes in the chassis. Good idea.

They don't appear to serve any purpose, or not now at least.

They're definitely not structural and the two 5mm holes left where the bolts fixing them to the subframe are no different to all the other holes in the subframe/chassis so not bothered about having two more.

I've no under trays and have had loads of bits removed/changed so I just wondered if they may have previously served a purpose but just cant think what they could be for??

No idea what their purpose is tbh, But seeing as they are part of the subframe, I wouldn't say they are something to throw away.

I should've taken some I know, but threw them out yesterday when I tidied up the garage.

They were approx 4" wide at the top and approx 2" wide at the bottom, they pointed directly upwards and the bottoms had a 90 degree bend and were attached to the subframes with a small approx 5mm bolt.


As mentioned they definitely weren't structural and they weren't supporting anything or fixed anything to the subframe - may be they might of previously before something else has been removed though.


I wondered initially if they were a stone guard but they were so small I couldn't see they being of any use to anything.


I can't see them on the photo above, they were fitted to the subframe in-between the two arms of the wishbones, it looks like they're not actually in the photo but at least on the left-hand side I can see the hole where they used to be bolts to.

I dont think he means those.

I think they could be home made sump-guard brackets by the sounds of it. Seen similar designs of brackets from the days of road rallying.

Thanks for all the help but is no one listening to what I've wrote? - they're small upturned triangles pointing upwards approx 4" long fixed by one small bolt in-between the arms of the wishbones. The subframe support brackets fit none if those criteria....

My gut feeling is that they were standard fit, the car was one owner before I brought it and was in immaculate non-modified condition therefore don't believe they would be aftermarket sump guard brackets etc.

Obviously none of this matters as they're off now but just wondered what they could've been for???

They would have held on some little deflectors that go around the driveshafts. I'll post a pic tomorrow if you like?

He means the verticals supports at the very right hand side of my picture.

Can't say I know what the do, would of thought they just helped to remove flex in the subframe by bolting it back to the chassis?

Believe it or not, it's description is 'fixing bracket' hehe! I'm not a cliosport specialist for nothing you know...?!?:rasp:

I kept my nearside bracket and deflector on the race car to stop stones flying around near the aux belt when going into the kitty litter....:S

Thanks Matt. I don’t think anything would've been physically attached to them as they didn't have any holes in them (other than the one to fix to the sub-frame), possibly they just supported something like the arch liners? Either way, thanks for your help.

Yep, supports the driveshaft protection liner (the funny shaped plastic part above the bracket in the attachment pic).
