Tail Happy 182

  S4, Tamora, Conti GT
Since owning my 182 i have noticed that it seems very tail happy, going round bends the back always feel like its trying to step out round corners, it also feels like the back of the cars bounces over bumps rather than absorbs them, i know the tyres on the back of the car are terrible ArrowSpeed N1000 could this be the reason for the lack of grip at the back or is it more likely to be the shocks that need replacing?
Im asking this because people say the clios handle really well, mine feels like driving a porsche when you have a lead foot round the corners

Get some decent rubber on there .. ditch finders should only be spotted in ditches, by themselves.

But also visually check the shocks for leaks. Failing that, push the car side to side at the rear, or open the door, step on the, er, step (!?) and bounce the car up and down. If it takes more than a couple of bounces to stop, the shocks are probably gone !

Get rid of those tyres on the rear and maybe invest in an ARB.

They're meant to tighten it up no end!

I will try the car bouncing tomorrow, have checked for leaks before but they seemed fine, i'll swap the front and rear tyres, as well tomorrow, put some toyo t1r's on the back hopefully this will help and i'll be left with savage understeer

Lol, you'll face death head on, rather than sliding backwards...

The lesser of two evils.

erm a rear arb will increase oversteer....

ditch the tyres first, but to me it sounds like the shocks...I ran from Le mans to my home with one shock out once....veeeeeeerrrrryyy interesting on leftside bends...
if you run a constant radius bend, does it bounce diagonally?

Ours was the same when we got it, rear felt twitchy on almost any corner, especially if you caught a bump mid way round.

It was suggested to me that the rear shocks are a common problem, even tho there was no direct evidence of them failing when inspecting them.
I replaced them with some genuine items and it transformed the car instantly.

Also recently, when changing the springs we did also find one of the front springs to have suffered a fracture, glad we were changing them ;)

This seems to be exactly it, i have put the better set of tyres on the back and the rubbish up front which has made some difference, but at the weekend i'm going to take out the rear shocks and inspect them myself.

Rear shocks mate, one of mine sprung a leak and I had to drive it for a day like it, albeit carefully and if going round a right hand bend and hitting a small bump mid way round, it literally felt like the left rear wheel hit a patch of ice it skipped out that badly. Very un-nerving....

started looking into this tonight as mines doing exactly the same thing! looks like new rear dampers or coilovers on the way! Bloody money pit!

Mine did this when I first got it, the rear bounced around on the smallest bumps, and stepped out if you showed it a corner.
Luckily the guy that sold it to me threw in a set of rear dampers off a 182, so I sorted it within the first week of owning it.

When I removed the knackered rears they were covered in fluid and wouldn't compress at all,
easy to change them over yourself, 20 minute job.

I know what i'll be doing this wknd! Allthough i do find it funny how were all dealing with our own little problems! Its one thing after the other though ! i need a new windscreen aswell now because of some sodding stone!

Could be worse, my gearbox exploded at 70mph on Saturday.:(

It's now stuck in gear and i'm going to have to get at least a grand together to get a replacement and have it fitted.

If it's got tits or wheels it'll cost you a fortune and give you nothing but sh*t.;)

Thanks for the replies guys, someone said earlier felt like hitting ice the car skipped across the road this is exactly what mine feels like, don't trust the thing round corners. Going to get a new set of rear tyres then will change the shocks and it sounds like this will sort the problem.

I paid £104 for a pair of rear shocks delivered from Autonation last year. Think there may be a discount code in the members section. Renault were £47+VAT each when i checked last year.

Why a grand ?! It's not a Subaru.

You're near Fred.. call him.

what he said
when my box went i bought a refurbed unit for £250, labour was £400 and then a bit more on new engine mounts (which you may not need). it will be much less than a grand.

£400 quid delivered for a secondhand box from Cliospares with 3 month warrenty, new clutch because everyone recomends it £120 eurocarparts, Labour from Fred budget for £500 to be on the safe side.

Or am I being thick and it'll cost alot less than that?

Ouch.

:dapprove:

I thought boxes were more like £2/250, not £400...

In the for sale section they are, but i'd have no idea what condition it was in before it was for sale,
ClioSpares are £350 collected from Doncaster, or £400 delivered for a box that's been tested with a 3 month warrenty.
That's second hand, a refurbed box from them is £450 collected and £500 delivered!

Maybe if i'm lucky i'll find one for £250 from a trusted member on here.

Where from?

on here. going rate. i bought one off ebay for £160 too. also my clutch was £50 new for a valeo unit, but again off here and it popped up at the right time.

nothing against cliospares, but for breakers in general do consider that they may not have driven the car so they don't know in what condition the gearbox is in. they offer a 3 month warranty which is great but if it breaks, you still gotta pay another £4-£500 in labour charges to change it again, and you'll get another gearbox of unknown quantities. i may be wrong here but that's my understanding. you have to ask yourself if it would be better to go with a known working gearbox rather than an unknown for £150 more. for me personally, it's not worth paying extra for a gearbox with a warranty. (unless the garage who is fitting it provide the warranty, so it covers labour charges too.)

make sure you get a three piece clutch with the release bearing. i've heard of some people not fitting a new £10 release bearing and having to take the box out again.

edit: i just read your last post. so it has been tested?

or £50 each -clubdiscount +delivery from auto-nation. official ones too, came in renault boxes and everything :)

  S4, Tamora, Conti GT
genuine renault ones are cheap, think your £90 for a pair, go for 182 cup ones as they are slightly uprated in stiffness and fit straight on :)

Erm....correct me if I'm wrong, but i have the cup packed 182, doesn't that mean i have the suspension package, if so wouldnt this be the same as the 182 cup anyway.

Taking off the rear shocks tomorrow. What should I be looking for to tell if they are worn and need replacing.
