12th Gen Intel is "Better" than the AMD equivalent now.
Yeah but Intel use Comic Sans on their internal training software 😬

Tbf that was a presentation they put together for Linus so it's probably not entirely accidental lol
While the inside of the foundry was very interesting, I was blown away by the fact they'd built their own concrete plant to help speed up construction of their new fab

You learn something new every day, I guess I've never really paid attention to large scale construction projects.

That second one is broadly the same as mine, but the case is different. Not that it makes a huge difference to the important stuff i.e. the inside.

If you buy a new mobo when they change the socket type then you can be pretty sure it'll support 2 generations of CPUs.

That's how it's been for quite a while now.

I wouldn't bother buying the components separately and then getting a mate/friend to build it. Given how prices are these days it's a false economy and not worth the hassle. I would just get a system built by a reputable PC specialist and go with that. I wouldn't bother with the 3090 either unless you are serious about content creation or GPU compute performance. Or just baller. Save yourself a fortune and go for a 3080/Ti and get similar performance whilst saving yourself a good few hundred quid and then some.

CPU wise, AMD has some decent deals at the moment and the Intel 12th gen offerings (Alder Lake) are good, too - probably looking at the sweet spot being the 12700K in my opinion (12900K if you're baller/Cub). As above, definitely go SSD nowadays - I'd only consider larger capacity mechanical drives for those that need storage for, say, archiving of content (such as video editing). I'd also be looking at 32GB RAM, the extra is worth it and nice to have.

@Adamm. To save hassle, I'd seriously consider the link posted earlier - the AMD 5900X with 3080 Ti, then spend a little extra (the saving you make by not getting a 3090) on replacing the 2TB HDD with a large SSD and consider 32GB RAM as opposed to 16GB. Job done.

Cheers mate was definitely leaning to that because the cheaper price. I think I'm pretty settled on that and will look at the SSD and Ram upgrades.

Now I've basically got that sorted I just need to figure out a suitable desk. Funnily enough finding a desk I like that fits requirements is proving more difficult than the PC 😂

With a system like that, it will be sweet sat on a few planks of wood and propped up on bricks! I got lucky with my desks... nicked a couple from an old place I worked at that made us redundant without notice, so we turned up with hire vans and stripped the place of all the office furniture! :ROFLMAO:

I can’t wait to get a proper desk when I move. Probably one with some form of trunking underneath for extension leads etc. After I buy a new PC that is 🤣

Not sure if people have had the USB header issue before now - but more and more devices are using one on the mobo, like fan controllers, AIO pumps, USB case ports etc - and often the mobo itself supports only one, maybe two connections at most.

I had the issue this week where I needed three USB header connections for my system and bought the NZXT Hub as shown below from Scan. Amazon also had it listed, but didn't have stock at the time.

It's a brilliant little device - only 8cm X 4cm in size and has a magnetic backing to stick conveniently somewhere in your case or on the chassis. Connected everything through it, so that just one USB header on the mobo is cabled to it and everything works like a charm. Well recommended.

I have a decent spec PC which I rarely use for gaming, but I have a very old monitor, is this a decent screen? https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B07W81B99G/?tag=cliospnet01-21

I move to display port as I only have one HDMI on my motherboard and want to permanently connect a TV too.

I had one of these which is very similar (1080p 75hz), bit slicker looking (the bezels aren't as thin as on the pics but they're nice and slim). I gamed/made videos etc. on that for a couple of years, it's nothing special but I was really happy with it.

https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B071FWBF6J/?tag=cliospnet01-21

If you're not gaming on it though then maybe look into higher resolution monitors, will make using Windows etc a lot nicer! Shouldn't break the bank too much if you're not going for higher hz ones either.

No it was legit but I paused and it sold. Think he was desperate as made unemployed.
Really??…

If so that was probably the bargain of the century. Even at double that price that would sell instantly.

Jumped from HMS Intel and went over to the AMD Ryzen camp this week with a CPU and mobo bundle from Scan.

My six-year old i7 6700K was definitely an instant bottleneck for my recent 3070Ti purchase and I needed something to even the playing field out somewhat. Made the decision also in not wasting excess money on high-end mobos meant for O/C'ing obsessives. The last three boards I've bought have all been the top of their field when released and I simply wasn't using 85% of their feature sets. The proverbial 'owning a Ferrari to go to Asda in' sprung to mind - so going for something more mainstream was a nice change.

I can tell instantly with the manual - it must be a quarter of the size in thickness - lol.

I've had fun (not) the last couple of days getting a 3070ti to run properly in my new build. I ended up reducing the power supply to the GPU in MSI afterburner and it finally runs well. Just a small improvement over the old 1070 it replaced.

The old one...

The slightly bigger new one...

This is paired with a 11600k that I got last year.

I got a Lian Li Q58 to replace the NZXT H210i as it didn't have room for most new GPUs unless watercooled.

I have that motherboard. Be prepared to enjoy Ethernet adaptor chaos if you’re running Windows 10 or higher….

Just Google ROG Strix B550F Ethernet adaptor problems 😂
