The Power PC Thread [f*ck off consoles]

Just a quick question about FOV in games using eyefinity, does anyone know what theirs is set to in black ops 2? Mine is severely stretched on both side screens, obviously bringing it down will reduce this but has anyone found a setting that is spot on or close enough? Res is 5760x1080 if that matters.

@g30rg1e Get a single 780Ti, or a Titan if you can pick one up cheap.

will jump on a second hand one as soon as the next generation is released unless the high end NVidia Maxwell stuff is worth a shot :)

ooo. Like that is it. :D
LOL! I'll be more than happy to give my misguided and uninformed assessment once the news and announcements have been made. I just hope the adoption of DirectX12 is as anticipated. DX10 was, well, pointless and DX11 hasn't really been used extensively when compared to DX9. Hopefully the new features, integration and wider platform support will see DX12 come to the fore.

Do you guys cover your base units when they are not in use?

My case came in a clear plastic bag of quite thick plastic and I drop that over the case when I turn it off at night to reduce the amount of dust that will get on it and drop through the big exhaust mesh on the top over night and when I'm at work during the day.

My makeshift cover is getting a bit knackered now but I can't really find any products out there that look quiet decent and will fit our full size gaming cases (with a bit of extra length to fit over the cables at the rear). I looked on all the computing sites I know and they don't have anything. I thought most people would be wanting to buy covers and that there would be loads of options.

But its just a few crappy small covers on Amazon that won't fit and that is it?!

I can't imagine many people do as it's just not practical, you can buy additional filters for most of the mainstream cases these days, but tbh its no biggy to give it a hoover out / wipe over every now and then.

Haswell-E... looking around June time and with confirmed DDR4 support (max. memory speed of 2133MHz per DIMM slot, 6 and 8 core versions)...

I love PC tech I really do. But those prices make me wince. £1k for an 8 core processor! Now how much will DDR4 be!?

I'd love to pop some more filters on my 540. But the only decent set I can find are about £60 and I grumble about paying that for some filters! Get a micofibre cloth and a gentle hoover out every now and again I reckon!

Yep, couldn't agree more, although it is a bit of a pain dusting with all the tubing in mine.

I definitely think I'll be upgrading to Haswell-E, love the thought of 8-core.

£50 says it won't be June. Also that's bad termonlogy with 'max' memory speed! Basically it means 2133 is officially supported! Crucial have already teased 3000ghz modules running at fairly low voltage. Going to be stonkingly expensive!

Andy, OT question - how does it work in terms of drivers for the API on XB1? Does AMD update the drivers chronologically as and when MS request certain changes or is it pretty fixed within the SDK, and what you see is what you get?

The majority of the driver work is carried out by Microsoft's Xbox One OS driver team in Redmond (or wherever they are based these days) and they work alongside a select team from AMD as and when needed (seeing as they obviously produced the GPU for the system). It is Microsoft that drives the evolution of the drivers and incremental updates may be released to address serious bugs, performance issues, security vulnerabilities, housekeeping, new features, and so forth. At a higher level, it's analogous to the PC world in many ways (e.g. updated driver from X to support new features exposed by DirectX version Y.Z). The beauty, if you can call it that, is the nature of the system and the fact that it's a fixed platform... which causes less headaches for the developers. If, for example, Microsoft were to support DirectX12 on Xbox One then there would be an update to the drivers to support new features made available in that new version of the API. However, legacy and backwards support is essential as they must absolutely not break what worked before.

I thought it might be the case that being dedicated, most of it would be in house. Cheers for the insight Andy, always a pleasure :D.

Fancy buying some x79 gear in a few months? ;)

Seriously though, very much doubt those reports are accurate! Seems way too soon. Edit; Just to be clear, by soon I mean from what Intel previously specified in their road map. Which was Q4! Not in relation to x79, which is WELL overdue an update.

So a bit of a PC update, finally got everything just the way I want it. I'm not spending another penny on it now for a year or two (so he says anyway!).

Just picked up a second monitor and some braided cables :)

Depends if we're talking mate's rates... LOL! Seriously, I don't think I'll be spending much more on my rig for the foreseeable future. Well, not until Haswell-E becomes readily available... I will reassess once that happens!

Yes, it does seem sooner than previous rumours and reports had suggested. It's not as if anything has come to market that has forced Intel's hand (at least as far as I am aware). I would genuinely love to invest in an 8-core Haswell-E but I fear they will be mighty expensive. I'll wait until you've purchased said CPU and provided some feedback and benchmarks... ;)

Nice setup Wilkeh

Wilkeh........ A thumbs up on the case I have one myself, mine used to buzz like a beehive, had to separate the mesh from the plastic ribs and reassemble with silicon in between to cure it.

I need to game at 1440P. I just can never decide on what monitor to get!

I change my mind every week.

19 months ago I bought these (mine are slightly older revision) cost me £450 for a pair and that included import duty.

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Achieva-S...9039?pt=Computer_Monitors&hash=item1e8236816f

and there still going strong, 1440p on a budget and mine have LG panels inside so presume they all have :)

Sorry for the s**t picture, slipped on buy button again - using the one below for work, so used to typing on my normal one it makes sense to have one at work.

Ducky shine 3 with Brown switches, O-ring dampers and key caps from a "crapbag".

Paid with Bitcoin from Scan as my first purchase (other "first purchase" item was out of stock so cancelled order), very very smooth transaction!

Very pretty. I don't know which mechanical keyboard to buy. Have a Sidewinder X4 that still functions perfectly and is relatively clean so a bit loathe to replace it

I loved my K70 but my Ducky Shine 3 beats it hands down. Such a fantastic bit a kit! :)

Clocked a pretty swanky Catzilla score at 1375 core. Bare in mind this is still on a voltage locked reference card ;)

6th highest ever score for a single card run. :D. Got a chap who can't beat it with his Classified.

I always get s**t clockers, be it gfx cards or cpu's.

+330 core and +295 mem!!?? FFS i barely get +100 core and +200 mem before it craps out in heaven :(

I managed to win a cheeky bid on a 690 GTX on the weekend, should be a noticeable improvement from 3x 5770's :rasp: Also having to change my pump, started clicking a few weeks ago and the temps have been creeping up. Got some corsair sp120's to give a try as the 2 molex ones I have on the radiator at the moment are deafening me.

The release of nVidia's Maxwell-based GPU's should stir things up a bit regarding GPU use for mining. Hopefully it will bring prices down for people who dabble in a bit of mining.

EDIT: Nice results Mike! LOL at upset geezer with his 'underperforming' Classified. :p

I wouldn't want to buy a used AMD card at this point personally. You don't know what condition people have had them mining in. £310 is pretty reasonable! Really. I've just bought an MSI r9 290 gaming but the price of the 290x version has just come down on amazon to about £70 more and wondering whether it's worth the hassle of returning and upgrading.

Another score on Catzilla, but 720p run.

I spent an hour last night tweaking my system voltages which is something I rarely do as any degradation is voided by how long I keep my kit, and also the temps I run at.

For those that know a bit about x79 platform: I realised that PLL voltage (it's known to give stability at high FSB) down from auto 1.8v to 1.6v actually helps to also reduce Vcore required. In doing this I was able to reduce my Vcore by over .2v which is pretty good going.

I would of liked to have reduced VCCSA (Internal memory controller volts, helps to get CPU stable at higher memory frequencies), but I'm unable to run any less than 1.2v. The more memory, the harder work it is on the CPUS IMC. I have seen some people need as much as 1.3v for 32GB (8GB modules). Which will degrade the CPU. 1.2v is deemed safe for 24/7 use, but if you need to go any higher than 1.25v then it's time to back off the overclock.

Ended up with :

4960 @ 4.77 (BCLK 129 / Multi @ 37)

Vcore @ 1.380v

PLL @ 1.65v

VTT @ 1.1v

VCCSA @ 1.2v

VRAM 1.7v @ 2403mhz 9-12-11-21-CR1 (Default 2133mhz 1.5v C9-11-10-30 CR2)

Next is working on the memory timings and voltage, only had these sticks a few weeks.

Anyone seen the Samsung 4k 60hz 1ms screen being released soon?

I'm mighty tempted. Running games at the same resolution as a PS3 does not make me feel fuzzy.
