Bit more news on the new AMD cards expected soon. It's already expected they won't challenge Nvidia for out and out performance, but they seem to be headed in a value for money direction. The AMD cards are set to cost nearly 40% less than Nvidia's 4090.

Will be interesting to see the reviews and benchmarks when it does launch, prices are for US customers, so no idea how that actually translates to over here.
Currently a 3090/3090ti is still over a grand, so perhaps the prices of those will come down if the 7900 XT performs well?

I really hope we start to see a return to sensible pricing soon, but I fear we won't. I really can't bring myself to upgrade at the minute.

I bought a 1070 Ti for just under £500 back in December '17.

For the same money now I'm looking at a 3060 Ti, a card that's now two years old, that offers only 50% more performance.

Five years progress and I'm getting 50% more performance for the same money. I've been tinkering with PCs since the late 90s with my GeForce 2 MX 400, and I can't ever recall such a poor offering in terms of upgrading (at least for 'sensible' money that is).

Yes, I wonder if retailers are sat on a bunch of overpriced stock, with people waiting for the 4090 to launch and a stream of ex-miner cards hitting the used market, buying a new 30-series card now doesn't look a great prospect.

If the 7000 series cards benchmark well, and come in priced low enough, there's going to be no takers for brand new 30 series stuff if the price doesn't drop.

I suppose it's a bit like the car market. Everything might well be overpriced, but no-one wants to take the haircut and while everyone keeps their prices high, no-one's really lost anything (yet).

Maybe I'm being too demanding but looking back I've tended to spend around £500 when it gets me double the frame rate, and historically that was usually every two years or so. To be sat at 5yrs and 50% is a hell of a drop.

Yes the last couple of years they've both faced great demand and limited production, although in an almost parallel opposite to the car market, the silicone industry is fast approaching a vast oversupply.

Hopefully a few factors come together to rebalance things;

Miners no longer want these cards, which removes a large number of (very greedy) customers right away.
This also removes alot of speculators and touts from the market.
New cards being released, making existing ones less attractive.
Big production increases in the sector push manufacturing costs right down

After a near 10 year break, im finally getting a PC again.

Well, work needs a beastly PC to handle some processing stuff and ive shoved my graphics card in it (and it shall reside in my office ;)) so I should be able to actually do some gaming in the evenings.

Thoughts on if ill be able to run games well enough considering spec - I dont even have any up to date FPS games but might like to jump on COD with some of you chaps....

i9 - 11900K
16GB DDR4 Ram
650PSU

YAY!

I dont have anything that could even display 4k, I should have said. So it will be 1080p at best.

Annoyingly however, I really need the PC today. The shop across the road is building it but the CPU fan hasnt arrived. Hoping to arrive today but they close at 1pm.

Might be installing it, activating it and installing windows myself at this rate. Desperate for it!

Welp. Im pissed off.

Told the PC shop it needed to be done by today as im off Mon/Tues and we need the PC in order to continue working.

Popped in first thing this morning, reminded them it needed to be done knowing they shut at 1. Just popped round there (was about 12.30) and the absolute whopper has shut. I can even see our PC in the back.

Wanker!

Oh well, at least it will be ready for when the mrs is away for a few nights next week -

After weeks of trying to figure out what to buy, I have just spent much moneys

It's less than this because the 6900 XT was down to 649.99 with a speshul forum code on OCUK (and that figure includes delivery, which I didn't pay)

Actual spend was:

£1239.91 at OCUK (6900 XT, both of the NVME drives and the 13600K)
£352 at Orbit (Case and AIO)
£351.86 at Box (PSU, case fans, thermal paste)
£378.21 at Amazon (RAM and mobo)

£2321.98 total

Can't wait. First big upgrade in forever!

Also, full rainbow puke errwhere

Realised earlier I missed a fan, so ordered another one (exhaust fan at the back)

I want to get some cable extenders for the 24pin etc, any suggestions of brand or just get whatever is the cheapest on Amazon?

CableMod or Corsair - don't skimp on your cables.

The Corsair pro braided kit is decent. I used a set in my old build, and it’s now in my lads PC.

Should've ordered the white version then!
Doesn't exist :(

Highest wattage that's white and comes with white cables is the RM850

My existing PSU (TX650M) has had an excellent innings.. over a decade old now and still chugging along

Bought that for my i5-3570K. The case is from that build too haha (Corsair Carbide 400R). Even still has a DVD drive (which err is actually plugged in but it must be 5+ years easily that it had anything in it)

So many deliveries.

3 of the DPD are on the same van, 1 of them on another one. Then weirdly Amazon have used the cheaper of the 2 orders I did with them to send via DPD, and the other one (motherboard and RAM) is Amazon Logistics

Got a 3 hour corporate induction thing at work this afternoon/evening which I'm hoping I won't need to be on Zoom for so I can sit and build. Excite.
