Picked up a 3080 12Gb for £370, pretty happy with that. Going to have to rearrange my computer to fit the bloody thing in though, radiator will need relocating to the top of the case because the card's so long 🙄

Should be a tasty upgrade from my 1080 though 👌🏻

Well that was stressful. Took everything apart ready to move my radiator and discovered my case only supports 140mm fans up top, not fans + radiator. All the measurements listed online suggested that my card would end up being stuck halfway in the radiator.

I was about ready to pack it up and stick it back on eBay but then I had a thought. I'd eyeballed it at the beginning and thought it looked closer than the measurements suggested, still impossible with the radiator pipes in the way though.

Now the rad was out I installed the card, then slipped a fan into the front of the case, then angled the radiator while holding the GPU back and managed to drop it in as well.

I'll admit it's a bit tight, and not ideal for airflow, but it fits!

Literally millimeters to spare 🤣

Only had time for one benchmark run before the football.

The previous results were the result of lots of fiddling, replacing TIM with liquid metal (4790K and the 1080), removing panels, running fans at 100% etc etc

The latest result was after slapping it all together, installing a driver, and running a benchmark in 33°C heat

Quite an improvement 👌🏻

Just get a bigger case 😂😂
I've got a bigger case, it's just full of my old hardware 🤣 (and to be fair is a lot more restrictive due to the solid front panel, hence removing the panels for benchmarking)

This case fits in the cupboard under the desk perfectly so I'd rather not change it again, I only bought it last year when I built the desk.

I had to leave to watch the football, next time I'm back I'll mess around with undervolting and adjusting the fan curve to be a bit more aggressive. That should solve the temps and possibly net me a few extra MHz due to the reduced temps 👌🏻

my pc is over 7 years old now and it hasn't got a cpu cooler, when i eventually upgrade to a newer pc, when does it become ness'ry to have a cpu cooler installed? i don't play games on this pc nor will i play games on the new one

How 'tough' are cpus? I have a I9 14900k in my fairly recent build and everything was fine up until a couple days ago I started to get blue screens and the cpu was running hot on idle, usually around 40c it was 20-30c higher. Fancontrol was playing up and didn't want to open, I'd sometimes get a blue screen trying to open it. When It was open I was able to control cpu and case fan and even at 100% cpu fan speed it maybe got to lower 50s.

I did a fresh install of windows, installed fancontrol and realised that the cpu fan wasn't spinning up accordingly, apparent from more noise now, it was always quieter than the case fan but I forgot what It actually sounded like. Cpu temps are now around 35c... I've set a lower max temp and the ambient temp is lower than usual in the room right now, some peace of mind. Although I'm worried that the over heating has put stress on my pc and It'll bluescreen/crash easier now, because It wasn't exactly cheap.

I would be honestly amazed if you didn't have some sort of cooler. I can't think of a desktop CPU in the last decade which didn't need some sort of additional cooling, even if it's just a passive heatsink.

Also has anyone gone back to win10? I had to boot up my old pc to get wifi drivers and forgot how good the ui was. I had windhawk which made the theme as close to win10 as possible but even then it wasn't perfect and was kinda buggy.

You'll definitely have one, even if it's just the one that came with the CPU.

I'm still on the original Widnows 10, my pc isn't compatible with Windows 11 the pc is saying

Less power, less heat, and better performance. Undervolting is witchcraft. Only spent about 15-20 minutes twiddling around in Afterburner, there's definitely more in this card but I don't have time this evening to mess around more. It's stable in Time Spy and Heaven which is good enough to call it a day.

6th gen intel didn’t have it built in natively. You could add a separate TPM on most motherboards to enable it though.

I need a new laptop, something that won't s**t itself if I installed Photoshop/ lightroom on it and imported lots of files.

This is the spec of my current one which must be 8 years old and it struggles, even with most of the software removed.
It won't even run the latest Photoshop now.

Ideally something under £6700 as I'm skint(ideally somewhere that does 0%). I have no preference on Intel or AMD. I don't know where they are up to spec wise now.

It needs an SD slot though and not micro SD like a lot seem to come with.

We have very different ideas of skint 🤣
You could buy basically anything with that budget, did you add an extra zero?
Oh f**k.

Its £600.

I originally put £700 but realised I can't spare the extra 😂

I've also seen you can get SD readers but I'll end up losing it, but it's not a deal breaker that I thought it might have been.

Honestly I have no clue about Photoshop and what's required for it, but I think you might have to buy an SD card reader separately these days, especially on the lower end of the market where thin and light is all people seem to care about.

f**k computers, stupid f**king things.

Ran some stress tests to get a benchmark for temps and clock speeds before changing my CPU cooler, swapped everything over and now it won't turn on 🤣😭

Fixed it. I must have nudged the 8 pin power at some point last night, reseated it this morning and it powered straight up.

Friendship with liquid cooler is over. Now air cooler is my best friend.
1000038067.jpg

Ran 30 minutes of Furmark and Cinebench simultaneously, before and after to give some data for comparison. And took the temps while everything was still under 100% load.

The CPU temps predictably increased, mostly due to having the intake sucking hot air directly from the hole in the backplate of the GPU, but going from 52°C to 61°C is more than acceptable.

The GPU on the other hand dropped from 74°C to 65°C, causing a slight increase in core clock speed and promising more headroom for fine tuning later 😎

I think it's pretty safe to say that having a 280mm radiator as an intake was a bit restrictive for the graphics card!

I'm still struggling to get my head around just how much of an improvement this card is over my old one. Was playing Quake 2 RTX earlier at 1080p at a locked 144Hz, previously my 1080 would get around 40fps at 800p. I know the 1080 doesn't support RT but still, it's a crazy improvement. RDR2 also ran at 2-3x the framerate at the same settings. Gaming just doesn't highlight the performance difference well enough so I ran a few more benchmarks.

I've messed around with undervolting a bit more and changed my cooling setup and I've got some pretty decent scores. Here's my system compared to similar systems - top 5%!
1000038137.jpg

And here's it compared to similar systems with the 10Gb version of the 3080 😯
1000038267.jpg

And here's my card compared to the ridiculously expensive 3080Ti
1000038275.jpg

Considering I haven't overclocked anything in my system, only undervolted, that's just ridiculous levels of performance.

The best thing is that my system runs quieter than it ever did when water cooled, even though the AOI only ever ran on the quiet profile (outside of benchmarking) which is counterintuitive but it's noticeable. I'm finding myself actually looking at the PC to see if it's on before the screen turns on because I can't hear any fans 🤣

You've just posted the same image 3 times ?

What do any of those numbers mean?
Scores in Time Spy and how my score compares to other similar systems.

For example, my score is in the top 5% of identical systems, top 1% of systems with the 10Gb 3080, and top 21% of systems with a 3080Ti.

Tl;dr My card is fast as f**k boiiiiiii

I sold my 4090 a short time ago and bought a 7900 XTX. Similar performance, money in my pocket.

Still no solid news on the 50 series release date. Maybe Q4 2024, maybe 2025. Maybe they wait for AMD and see if their cards are any good.
No-one is expecting them to be cheap, everyone seems to agree on that fact.

Last I heard is that AMD won't have anything to challenge the 5080/5090. So maybe waiting to see how high they can put the prices on them.

i am really weird, i always think that AMD cards are like the poor sibling of Nvidia, so i never really look at or consider them

Yea supposedly AMD will be middle range but cheap, I think they're aiming at 4080 levels of performance, but at 500 quid or so?

Nvidia hold the edge at the higher end, and with ray tracing, but the AMD cards are pretty strong with rasterisation and are much cheaper. So in the mid range the AMD cards are usually better value, only losing out when ray tracing is considered.
Although the recent Nvidia line refresh with the 4070 Super did close that gap somewhat.
