That may work out for me anyway mate.

Just letting you know my interest in it. I need to make a few decisions before I can commit to it first :)

Long Update

So back in November I had my disappointing trip to RS Tuning where we discovered the timing was out, cam cover sealed with wrong type of sealant and a few other niggles like a leaking water pump.

The car went back to the garage the following week for the cam cover to be resealed, timing corrected and other problems sorted. I also had the original R26 cams from the old engine put back in which turned out to be different from the cams which came with the new engine. We didn't fit them originally because I was told by a Renault specialist the cams in my new engine were the same and the old engine hadn't been dismantled.

I headed to Surrey Rolling Road at the end of November to see what it was making.

Slightly better than the 237bhp at RS Tuning but still not good. Emailed the graphs to Paul and he responded saying something still doesn't look right 😧

This left me stuck really as I wanted to get the car checked over by either Dan@SJM or Rentech but I was so busy at work in December wasn't able to take any time off.

It then suffered a major electrical failure just before Christmas, at this point I feared the R26 would never see it's true potential 😧

Some members on here suggested I should burn it but I had already spent more than the value of the car at this point so it was a case of fix it whatever the cost.

The problem was causing the doors to constantly lock/unlock, rev counter and speedo not to work, radiator fan to constantly run on high speed. Dash was showing Braking Fault, Steering Fault warning, Check ESP, and STOP. ABS and power steering wouldn't work sometimes as well which was fun fighting against. Then to turn off the engine I had to stall it and then disconnect the battery to turn off the lights and radiator fan.

Renault replaced the UPC fuse computer which fixed the problem until I washed the car. The car went back to the garage that built the engine and he discovered a pin on the ecu plug was bent. Probably my fault when I fitted the Odyssey battery  This seemed to fix the problem and the car was fine over the Christmas break.

Then in January I was driving up a very wet M3 motorway and the problem came back :rage:

I decided to take it back to Renault as they replaced the UPC and they gave me a quote of £180 to check the wiring etc to diagnose the problem. The wiring was all ok and they diagnosed that the alternator was causing voltage spikes which was interfering with the UPC. The alternator was then replaced (which in a way I was happy about as at least it now matches the new engine lol) at a cost of £600 including the £180 diagnosis.

During replacing the alternator Renault discovered that the water pump was leaking which pissed me off as that was one of the problems the garage was supposed to fix back in November!!

The new alternator solved the electrical failure but the car was still giving an alternator fault code and Check ESP when driven so they ended up getting Renault UK Technical involved who tried and failed to solve it. They tried a new battery, spark plugs, coil packs etc but nothing would clear the faults. It was then referred on to Renault France but they washed their hands of it as they could tell from the injector readings it has been remapped.

This was now the end of January and the car had been with Renault for two weeks. We decided as there was nothing else they could do that I should take it away and see what happens.

Since then the Check ESP comes on occasionally under high load but no more electrical problems.

Fast forward to this week I booked it in with the garage to replace the water pump under warranty. As I wasn't confident in their ability to time the engine correctly (despite seeing the horseshoe tool slotted into the cams) I decided to book it in with Rentech on Thursday to check the timing. Long story short Mike discovered the timing was out again (looked the same as at RS Tuning) and corrected it.

Driving home I stopped off at @Christopher.'s to drop off some brakes he bought from @Cub. I then decided to go the cross country route to test it out and I could tell there was a bit more top end.

This morning I went to Surrey Rolling Road to see if the Rentech correcting the timing had actually made any difference.

Nice to see it bang in a 294 first run :tonguewink:

Here are the graphs:

294bhp and 325lbft at the flywheel

AFR's not too bad considering it's running a forged engine and hybrid turbo on just a 630cc injector base map

245bhp at the wheels so almost as much as the flywheel figure when the timing was out.

I'm just glad that I have finally got a car with a healthy engine and turbo for the first time since 2012!

It's been a long and expensive journey but hopefully it'll come to a good conclusion on Friday 6th March at RS Tuning

Then Cliosport rules are I have to sell it right? :tonguewink:

Great to hear it's finally running bang on dude.

Thanks JP, see you at SRR :)

The car impressed me on the rollers yesterday when I was there! Fair play for keeping at it!

Thanks. Was yours the Mk1 on the rollers two or three cars before me?

Nice result on that 294hp
Knew it would be better

Really appreciate your help Mike, and thanks for fitting me in when you're so busy.

I though that was a good idea

Good to see it finally making good power!

Cheers Fletch

LOL almost tagged you in that sentence :tonguewink:

Wow just read the whole thread, some serious ups and downs with a lot of bad luck, good on you for keeping at it, and impressive results, bet you can't wait to get it mapped! Do you every take it up the strip? I know it's a track based car but it would be interesting to know what kind of quarter mile time and terminal speed it would run, especially when mapped, Sounds like you use the car as Renault intended. beast!

Bet that was a relief. Sounds like a right nightmare.

What should it be good for when it goes for its proper map?

It has been a bit of a journey lol

No, never taken it on a drag strip.

I've never found it that great at getting off the line and even though I've got an R26r clutch and SMF it's still a potential weak point.

It's not something that has ever appealed to me either as I've heard RWYB day at Santa Pod can be a whole day waiting around for just 3 or 4 runs.

Plan was to fit my Mocal catch tank yesterday but the rain stopped me.

I got home from early today and the weather was ok so I decided to attempting fitting it.

Decided to use velcro coins to mount it on the battery tray. Figure they hold my number plates on at 160 so should be up to the job :tonguewink:

Next jobs are:
Fit Ktec stud conversion kit I purchased ages ago
Tidy up the wiring to the battery and ecu as it looks a mess

Then I'm tempted to fit the Powerflex front arm camber and castor bushes if the reviews are good.

Made 400hp. (the e39 model) Could of been a bit more seeing as it has headers etc done to it but happy it has the stock power after 127k on it still. Seeing as most make around 380hp.

Nice result.

Shame I'd need to spend a few more grand on an aftermarket turbo to achieve 400bhp.

I've been to quite a few, with mates running there cars, I spectate along with a few others ( get pissed ) it's a good crack, personally I couldn't be assed myself, but I'd like to know how a modified r26 would do, a yellow one, not a silver one really ;)

It would probably do low 13's.

Went to the Ford and Renault Day on the Bedford SEN Circuit yesterday as last minute replacement for @Cub. who unfortunately couldn't attend due to family problems.

This was the first time I had been to Bedford and first time on track since fitting the forged engine and hybrid turbo. I took @Fletcher with me as passenger and the car ran really well considering only preparation was checking the oil the night before. I was faster than most stuff and nothing overtook me either which is always my aim.

I was running AD08R tyres on the front and Goodyear Asymmetric 2s on the rear. The combination worked ok surprisingly with the AD08Rs only losing grip once in second corner on one of the earlier laps in the video below. I should have swapped them round to make the rear more lively but couldn't be bothered.

I suffered from some brake vibration in the second session, they seemed to recover though after backing off slightly and braking more gently for a few laps. I don't think my brake setup is as good now with the Brembo HC plain discs instead of Tarox F2000 grooved discs. I'm also running oem rear pads now instead of DS2500 which I usually run all round.

There's definitely not as much bite now so I need to think about upgrading now I'm going to be running an extra 50 or 60 bhp. I'll start by changing the rears back to DS2500 and bleeding the brake fluid then look at either going back to Tarix discs or a big brake kit.

Unfortunately first lap of my third session I noticed a weird air noise so had to come straight back into the pits. Turned out that the two of the studs holding the turbo on to the manifold had lost their nuts. The third stud and nut had come out completely and come to rest someone on top of the turbo. Thankfully @Dan@SJM managed to get the stud back in tight so I could call it a day and drive home.

Here's a video of the second session on track shot using my £99 GoPro Hero mounted on top of the centre console above the clock.
