Behave.

FWD car with inferior suspension setup and the seating position of a bus is more involving??

A 172 is a quick and quirky little car (I'm looking at buying one atm tbh) but let's be honest, it's still based on a shopping trolley. Standard for standard, the Clio would be quicker, no doubt. But the MX5 is 19294924x more involving that the Clio will ever be. Fact.

lets not pretend a mx5 is anything but an entry level sports car and not a quick 1 at that. imo lotus always did it better starting with the elan. the suspension is perfectly set up on rs's for fast b road driving and if you think that on a fast wet b road blast youd be anywhere near in a 18 year old design convertable your very wrong. the clio would even do the trip to the hairdressers better ; p. FACT.

Maybe I can help here. Some people on here have obviously never driven an MX5 or a 172.

We've had Mx5's for years, my girlfriend loves them. I've only had the 172 cup for a few days but we both agree its more involving than the 5. The biggest problem with the 5 is the lack of tourque. They're not quick cars. They do have some nice handling charachteristics but lack the focus you get with the cup. Incredibly well made but ultimately lacking performance. Also far too heavy on fuel for the size/weight/engine/power. We've only had the mk2 and mk2.5 MX5, I know the mk1 is more focused. At the end of the day Mazda had to quickly note its customer base and adapt. The fact that 80% of new MX5's go to middle aged women means mazda had to compromise massivly to keep shifting them. What you get with the mk2 was a vey nice but very watered down sports car. Im quite sure anyone who's lived with one will agree.

I can't argue the 5 could do with more power but I only really miss it during the traffic light gp. Once you're up and running and bouncing off the limiter you run out of b road and license long before the car runs out of puff or chassis.

Its not about fast though. The 5 is fun before you turn the engine on.

Im glad Theres debate over what's more fun because it makes me feel better about choosing a clio to replace it with

The ONLY problem with a 5 is lack of power and heavy on fuel as such. So everything else i completely disagree with you on ;) But it's personal preference i guess, depends how you feel things, and what you want out of a car.

A good friend of mine does racing at all sorts of levels, test drives for all sorts of people everywhere, & all that malarky. When i asked him what car, in standard form would he prefer, my 1998 mk2 mx5 or a Clio 172/182. He answer was MX5 all day long. That was answer enough for me, he pretty much lives on a race track!

BUT all this isn't the reason i'm getting a clio. A few factors really. I wanted cheaper insurance, cheaper running costs, newer car, quicker car, all for the mk2 mx5 budget. The only car that ticks all those boxes is a Clio 172. Simples!

Haha wait till the first time it wags it's tail saraj and IF ya get it on 3 wheels. Trust me only thing I've had close for characteristics is a 205gti but obviously not as fast, grippy or well braked.

How do people rate the Clio against a EP3 CTR?
I'm used to driving one of those, although not agressively, as it's my partners, not mine. Even though that has a near perfect gearbox, and the overall driving experience leaves you grinning ear to ear, i'd still have trouble choosing it over a 5, although it might just win!! I just can't afford to buy one, and the insurance is much the same as the 5.

you make it sound like oversteer is an event - it's just going round a corner for some of us :p

I note Fred doesn't have any mint 172s in stock for 2k - I'm saddened (if not surprised).

back on topic a little.

I've come to terms with the idea that I might have to get a car that needs the belts doing (wests are near me and I assume they're good so having it done isn't a logistical nightmare). This naturally leads to the rest of the car possibly being a bit tatty - this doesn't bother me initially as I don't really give a toss what it looks like and I'll just tart it up over time but in terms of real cost to fix what else is a biggy?

bumpers? seats? clutch? suspenders?

Saraj there similar in performance to the cup models IMO cos I've always found the ff172 to be the least responsive of all the 1*2 but take away the sound of the vtec and the Clio is a better handling car and at putting the power down. A very good mate of mine has the type r so done every comparison there is to be done.

it's Renault so parts are cheap. Engine mounts, exhaust mounts perish, exhaust goes the same way so maybe get a ss one. Remember the dephaser and water pump while your doing belts. Few people have gone through gearboxes but I've done alot of hard miles and not had any problems.

Poopipe, there is a buying guide in the guides section! I'm yet to join as a member, but i don't & can't have paypal! So might prove difficult.

My quote for a cambelt was £60 plus parts ;) But then OH's good friend is a Renault technician.

  172
Still ALOT cheaper than a garage doing it, i get trade prices on parts too :)

The one i'm looking at tomorrow has already been done though, luckily. If there's no receipt for it, maywell get it done anyway. (if i buy it)

  mx5 & 172
I know about most of the really big mehanical issues I think (ive been researching) - it's the not so essential bits i'm interested in at the moment.

eg. if a car's generally mechanically sound but the driver seat is completely cacked, or that wobbly trim bit round the gearstick is busted is that going to be a huge pile of money to sort out? It'll drive fine but I'll want to sort it at some point. Little things like that add up if you're not careful and its usable haggling ammo too.

  172
That's a very good point! I like everything 'just so'. Spent £100's on the 5 getting it mint, and i'll do the same to the Clio. I've not looked at things like that - good to think about - thanks!

Oh & Kev, you can just call me Sara... being my name & all that :p

  Astra SRI/ Hornet
The seats will usually be sold as a set and probs arnt that cheap tbh SARA. Lol everything else I wouldn't worry about. If ya want a splitter though there 120 quid from Renault.

  172
Oh and ya not going to look at that black 1 Steve showed ya? That looked mint and exactly what ya want.

Someone else is going to see that tonight :)

I've found a Monaco blue one to see tomo night! 69k on the clock, belts done 7k ago, one little ding on the door but apparenly all ok apart from that. Will see. OH will go over it with a fine toothcombe as usual lol

Firstly, how is an opinion wrong?

Secondly, you should have a flick through any motoring publication in the last twenty years. See if they have anything bad to say about the driving experience of the MX-5's.

And thirdly, my Dad has a Mk1 MX-5, with Bilsteins and an LSD. It's a lot more involving than the 182, regardless of what speed you're doing. And that's based on first-hand driving experience, rather than your speculation and trolling.
