Valver tappets :(

  Valver
Tappets have started to get louder and louder and the noise is occuring nearly everytime i start the car from cold now and even when im driving with the engine warm! Already tried forte top end treatment which reduced the noise for a while but now getting worse :(

Anyone fixed this before? How hard is it to do? My friend is a mechanic and said he'd help so we have all the tools between us!

Any tips advice would be much appreciated.

I thought they were all noisy from cold?!?

Have you drained the oil and put new fully synthetic stuff in?

I've gone for Elf Excellium 5w40 and, although it's not strictly a true fully synth oil, it does quieten down a lot quicker and seems keener to rev :)

I changed the oil back in september with fully synthetic 5w40, maybe due for another change soon...

Thing is its starting to do it when the engine is warmed up as well, thats why im getting a little worried...

Its also very annoying :p

If you do replace them, theres a guy on ebay that sells brand new sets for the valver and williams engine for 70 quid, guessing its a good price as i've seen people link to his auctions before.

Ok is it a big job BenR? how long would you say it takes?

depends if you consider removing the camshafts a big job as they have to come out.

THen you clean the tappets, get a block of wood, slap them onto the wood to knock out the centre piston, give it a proper clean inside and the valves, prime, put it back together, then install......in short terms.

Does sound like a bit of a mission, how many hours do you reckon? Bearing in mind some of it will be done via haynes manual :S

Hmmm... looks like you may be in for a "strip down" job then! :(

Just curious how many miles ur engine on??

I know there french but well looked after F7's seem to go for a fair few miles!

Hard too say mate as i've not had the pleasure yet...

Id guess that you would need all the rocker cover assembly off, timing belt and pully's, then take the cam shafts out before removing and replacing the tappet's and putting it all back together like! Fun eh, prob worth doing cam/aux. belt etc. while ur at it too!

Id give it a good weekend to be safe, lol

Great I remember my mate telling me about having to change the timing belt on his R19 16v and how much of a nightmare it was... What happens if I leave it, it's not gonna damage anything is it?

go to retro-renault.com they have a whole post on there on how to sort out tappets ur self without replacing really good sitehave a look

drain the oil and replace with halfords miner oil 10 40.. run for 2000 miles and change.. that should sort it.
Is that mineral oil or not? Whats tht do?

I think it was just low on oil, I topped it up till the gauge was just under the max line and after a drive its totally gone, what a relief!

Wynns do an additive which would be worth a try before stripping everything down

hydraulic valve lifter treatment
