Video of our phase 1 turbo at combe

  182/RS2/ Turbo/Mk1
Took the turbo to combe, ended up retiring cause of it smoking, turned out to be one of the PAS pipes burst and spat fluid out which got drawn onto the exhaust, but I did get a bit of video first.

Was being a bit tentative initially as we noticed one of the tyres had been stood in some oil at silverstone, so wasnt letting it run wide out of the bends to use the whole track, was just going through the bends gentley and giving it a bit of a squirt, so not the most exciting video in the world, but it gives an idea of the potential at least.

And yes, before there is a 10 page CS driving standards critique I know the rules say that you arent allowed to overtake on the left, but if some wally wants to drive around the track off the line on the wrong side then Im just going to get out of his way and safely undertake and then clear off rather than sit watching him for ages, lol

Chip, I have a power steering set up if you want it?

You should just come to the unit one day, get yourself the throttle body and the PAS stuff. FOC obviously. ;)

Looks like a right circus of drivers in that session mate, enjoyed watching the parts where you had a clear track and could take the propper lines etc, would be really good to see what this thing could do with a set of AST's on and some sticky tyres.

You thought about getting a diff in there? Sounds like its spinning the inside wheel up on some exits of corners, unless that's you being a big excessive with the throttle application ;)

Should take the turbo to the ring next month mate!

No chance mate, the engine is completely fubar'ed.

It was worn out when I got it, Ive since wound the peak boost upto 25 pounds and kept using it relentlessly, it breathes so hard past the rings now that its pumping over a litre out of the breather in less than 5 minutes of hard use.
The only way I got it on track was a 2 litre recirculating breather setup that feeds the captured oil back into the dipstick tube (bit of silicon hose slid over it!) and the turbo return via a one way valve.
Its a copy of the Group A style setups we use on cosworth engines and its allowed me to get a last few trackdays out of a totally worn out engine, but its not upto going to the ring and back.
Even with the breather it used 2 litres of oil in the last 600 miles!

I dont care if it dies dramatically on a UK trackday (only got llandow left now anyway), as I am building a new engine starting in a couple of month, so Ive just done this to let me get a bit of use out of it this season, but it really is not upto germany and back inluding 4 days at the ring and a day at spa! would ruin our holiday!

Ive sorted out PAS and ETB now thanks mate, but thanks for the offer.

Need a day at your unit soon anyway though dont we? To make some progress on your mk1?

Yeah especially that 3 series and the 200sx near the end, was a miracle they didnt swerve into each other, I was very happy oto just push past and get out their way, lol

Its on sticky tyres and some (admitedly tired and old) h&R shocks, but I was being fairly conservative with it, if you compare the other video in our RS2 car you can see me being a lot more committed.
To be fair the handling is actually very good, I have no plans to change it, just to learn to drive it a bit harder, but when you know there is a chance you are breathing oil vapour onto your passenger side front, it takes the edge off your confidence on a right hand circuit.
Should think it will be about 5 seconds a lap quicker next year when im properly pedalling it (well as best as someone of my modest talents can do, lol)

It desperately needs a diff, but it wont be getting one, thats too much money for a car that is only temporary, my real clio is the mk1 and I would sooner spend on that.
I will be altering the way the boost is controlled to make it more driveable though, the trouble is at the moment its controlled manually so even at half throttle you get a 25 pounds of boost spike, not ideal for coming out of bends!
Thats just purely down to a lack of time though, its not complicated or expensive to make a lot better, will do for the next combe action day in april or possibly bedford in february, whichever of those will be this cars first even of next season. (depends a bit on if the nova is done or not as TBH thats far more fun, lol)

Would you not be up for slotting an R26 box into it? I'm sure the gearing isnt too far off and obviously you get the diff. Cant quite remember if you need to use the megane block though for everything to allign up again. I Know a friend is busy getting an R26 into his clio but his is a real frankenstein build lol

No because its heavier, it doesnt fit very well, you need custom shafts, they are expensive to buy and quite hard to come by.

Its just too much money/work for a car Im probably going to do 10-20 trackdays with and then get rid of.

If I was going to do anything with the gearbox, it would be a VAG conversion, but again its just not worth it when I want to spend my time and money on the nova and the mk1
