Went to view a ph1 172 before

  320d
As above realy, went down to a garage in manchester. The car was a Y plate, Iceburg Silver, 72K and FSH. Advertised at £2900 sounds good......

I get there and it has:

Cracked fog
Nakered paint on the OS door and front bumper
NS skirt coming off
FSH has no evidence of belt change
Power steering leak
Checked oil on the digital display and it wa two bars off full

I didn't even look at it properly either it simply wasn't worth it. I also couldn't drive it because the power steering was nakered.

However the positive is that I realy, realy liked the ph1. I've never properly got my hands on one to have a proper look utill today and i'm in love with them.

So my search for a minter continues, i've got 3 weeks to find one realy but if I have to look further than that and go without a car then so be it. There are a few I like on the net etc but they're all 150+ miles away and I'd hate to waste a full day off and £40 in petrol to be faced with a lemon of a car like today.

sounds like the kind of car i'm after with an £800 budget LOL

I've had a look on PH. Everything seems to be down south though. I'm only willing to travel for a minter. I'd prefare to find one slightly closer to home if possible.

If u were really interested in getting ur mits on a ph1 u should be bouncing on a train, bus, plane whatever to get to it and savour the drive home !!

I can't drive it home, can't get insured untill the 30th of this month. I'd need to go down, agree the deal, pay a deposit then get my dad to drive it home on day insurance as i'm under 21. Major ball ache.

I haven't got the time or money to spend weeks up and down the country looking at lemons. I'm going to make a few phone calls tomorrow and make sure it's worth my while before going down.

Have you never bought a 2nd hand car before?

Brett "O Hai, I'm calling about the 172 you've got for sale. Is it mint?"
Seller "(Sucking through his teeth) Oh yeah mate it's the best 172 in the world ever part 64"
Brett "I'll take it!"
Seller "Chortle"

:rasp:

Most sellers are going to lie. It's all part of the game.

You're going to have to go look at the cars, so just ring ask the basics and then go look...at lots of them. Unless you are rich and like wasting cash? A mint one will be sold in under a week, fact.

Well, I would wait until the 30th then tbh. You won't buy the first you see. You need to drive a few to get the feel for good ones and bad ones.

I literally bought mine before seeing it in the flesh.

Get whoever it is selling to send you as many pics as possible, a pic of every minor thing wrong with the car down to any scrape or small dent, tell him if he misses anything out hes the one that will be missing out - on a sale !!

As long as theres a service history, a decent bit of mot on it and the hpi comes up good then you should be ok ;)

I've done 700 mile trips to look at cars before.

If you're fussy, you need to travel. Some people aren't fussy and will settle for anything so can buy closer to home.

This is the one lad .......

EDIT: its up 26 days its a cert its sold !!

Its not sold, I don't think...I was tempted, but it had no tax and a rad leak. He mailed me the other day to say its now got 6 months tax and the rad has been replaced.

Only niggly thing with that is its got crack on windscreen about the size of 20p piece...so will probably need replacement come MOT time. Seems like a nice car though. :)

If its the difference between a lemon and a minter ill make the trip.

roadtrips ftw

Looks like i'll have to start making the longer trips then. I'm not overly fussed about it, it just seems unlucky that the best cars are furthest away from you. If you live in the south west there seems to be loads of good ph1's.

Aren't the sunroof models the French imports or something like that?

Not such a thing. They'd be left hand drive anyway :rasp:

Not sure if the French market sold them with a sunroof option but the ones listed here will no doubt have been retro fitted in

WTF does anyone want a sunroof when they have aircon ?:dead::dead:

What he said tbh.
I've been prepared to travel to Scotland to look at cars before, i've never actually done as it as when I plan to go, a mint car always turns up nearer to me & it get it.

Worst case scenario - you travel there & it's a dog ! At the end of the day, ask the seller a load of questions & get pics (good pics, of everything)

One persons 'mint car' is anther persons shed, I hate looking for cars !

I dont agree with this approach at all. As a seller i have always been honest with my descriptions. If someone wants to buy it then they come and view it. Have been pestered for pics etc in the past and they dont even bother replying. Just a waste of time. Never had a problem selling them.

BTW mine isnt a lemon, its a SUNFLOWER :)

Think there's a couple other standard ph1's worth a view . A flamer on p.3 PH iirc and a very low mileage silver pricey but noice.

There's one for sale in here for £2k now.

Looks very tidy, low miles etc. Just needs rid of the skanky wheels.

I know this totally goes against everything i have ever said but could you live with a ph1 everyday? they are getting on a bit now and they feel really old. You have an 05 plate ish clio and to drop down to a ph1 even if it is a sport will be a big downgrade in quality. I know full well i couldn't live with a ph1 day to day but it depends on your budget and how badly you want it. I know a ph1 will be quicker and more raw than a ph2 172 but for a day to day nice car a ph2 would be better. Just think about it before you spend your cash and make sure you get a drive in one as they will not feel as tight or new as your car.

At least you can drive to look at one I had to get on a fcukin plane lol, theres literally none over here !!

What approach could i have taken on buying mine ? As mentioned above I had to fly over to England so it was the best way for me and if the guy has little interest in driving any big distance then im sure this method would suit him as well.

Just buy mine Brett.

How did you get on today Brett?

Phoned up two people today. One was sold and the other isn't in stock yet.

I know a ph2 would make a better daily driver but I much prefare the look of the ph1.I don't do big mileage either, the furthest I go is 50 miles to lancaster and if I went any further than that it would probably be to go driving anyway to wales or whatever.

My other options where saxo vts's and 106 gti's, the ph1 is more refined than these.

At 19 I can deal with not having the most refined car in the world, even so it has more luxuries than my 1.2
