I wouldnt class cars like a Lancia Delta or a Nissan Pulsar as a hot hatch?!

Hello Peeps

Newby hear.

My Fav has got to be the Renault 5 GTT

For fun per pound and the cost of tuning they win hands down, the down side is that you have to be mechnicly adept to own and run one IMO

Since when were Group B Supercars hot hatches then???

  Clio 197

Yes, Groupe B cars with the engine in the back seat certainly are not hot hatches nor are the Group A Lancia Delta Integrales.

Hot hatches are more like the S1600, or F2 rally cars, Front Wheel Drive with normally aspirated <2.0litre engines.

Big engined turbos, 4WD, mid engine etc. should automatically disqualify a car from being a hot hatch. Was the "Breadvan" Ferrari 250 GTO a hot hatch?

5 gt turbo

ren 19 16v

clio willy

astra gte 16v (digital dash gave me a semi lob-on when i was a nipper)

alfa 33 cloverleaf (also gave me a semi iob-on looked like a 5 door ferrari but all have probaly rusted away to dust by now)

Ralph,

The 106 gti has a different suspension setup to the VTS, this is why they always came infront of the VTS (mk1) when tested.

Now the new VTS has 130bhp and the 106 still has 120bhp...... and there is still an advantage with the 106, ie peugeot make it rather than its sister company citroen ;) but not in any way is the vts a classic car, and there are much better hot hatches out there (ie the 106 is still the king to me and thus the reason the vts never got anywhere near it when the 306 GTi and Rallye held the hot hatch crown ;) the 106 was second ;))

Tony (owner of a few french hot hatches ;))
Ermmmm...... since when has the VTS had 130 bhp?!!!! I think your find the VTS handles just as well mate, its been proved in several track tests. Ive driven a 106 GTi and found it much the same as my VTS but abit softer and more forgiving, you can live on the edge more in the VTS but get it wrong and it bites badly.

raphy

escort Rs turbo along with the hugely popular r5 were prob the first of the mass market turbos!!!

r5 stupidly quit and handled well

escort turbo. bit slower well a lot slower but had safer handling on limit due to LSD and it was miles better built

well ITR could be classed as a small coupe but im not dissing the intergrale as its a wicked car but its hardly a hatch is it

think its safe to say that the williams is the most highly regarded hatch EVER

whatever car you may own no one has a bad word about one

Personal favourite is my Mk1 172, but my list of all times greats.....

1. R5 GTT - Classic been around forever!

2. Clio Williams - Because of the handling bumped up the list because its exclusive.

3. Clio 16V - Always wanted one of these while i was at school, its due to this that i bought my 172. Great all round car.

4. Pug 106 - Stick the road like glue, only falls down the list cause of its cost against the others!

5. Delta Integrale - Pure speed machine, still very fast even at todays standards!

I dont think there can be any doubting that Renault make the best Hot hatches, the list would go on i think the Sunny GTI-R, R19, the Saxo and the Civic Type R are all great cars, its hard to pick my top 5!!

  Clio v6

My personal opinion of course.

Clio Williams : Fantastic in every way.

MG Metro Turbo : A blast in its day but handling was crap.

Clio 172 : Wibbly wobbly handling but performance is outstanding.

Clio v6 Mk1 & 2 : Looks impressive full stop.

Mmmmmmmm, tough one this.

But here goes :

1) Williams clio

2) Clio 16v

3) Lancia delta integral

4) My car

5) The new clioV6

  Was a Clio 1.8 16v

In no order:

Clio Williams/16v

Civic Type R

Fiesta RS Turbo

Renault 5 GT Turbo

1st: Nissan Pulsar - WOW

All small hot hatchs, not including the larger Escort Cosworth or Integra type cars.

  VW Potato

Fiat Strada Abarth 130TC

Alfa 145 Cloverleaf (the 2.0 twinspark is at its best in this car)

R5 Gordini Turbo - how can you forget this little peach?

106 DOES have tweaks over the VTS. Better handling, better seats, better steering.

Sorry but i disagree. Have you driven both a VTS and 106 GTi??? I own a MK2 VTS which has superb suportive seats, nicely balanced handling and fine steering feel. My mate has an X reg 106 GTi which i drive regularly, the seats LOOK better cos their leather but when driving they dont give more support. I found the handling and steering feel great on the 106 but it didnt have the VTSs edge. The Sax just bites into the tarmac more due to its lower profile tyres and larger wheels. Both great cars but the 106 is not better tweaked at all just more forgiving where as the Saxo is more focused:)

I dont know why people say the 205 GTi 1.6 is better balanced than the 1.9 as they use the same engine - its just stroked to 1.9... Same Block - same bore... It does have extra bits like Oil cooler and stuff but I wouldnt have thought it would make that much differece...

Only driven a 1.6 though and thats my 1 2 3 4 and 5 :D

Cos the 1.9 was too powerful for its own good and suffered alot of torque steer. I think the 1.6 had 97 ib/ft of torque but the 1.9 had a mighty 119 ib/ft in a car that weighed about 900 kg!!

In no Order

Seat 1.8 20v T cupra R

Clio 16v/Williams

Escort Cosworth

Mini Cooper S

Clio V6

Integra type R

........Damm it there is too many to list!

How many counts of 205GTi are there in that list :D

Nice to know I drive one of the best Hot hatches of all time.

The torque steer isnt too bad in the dry, dunno what the car is like in the wet yet though, prolly spins like a b**ch. The guy that owned it previously said itd spin through 1st, 2nd and into 3rd :D

Awesome handling even with standard ride height, but very on the edge and you just know its not going to warn you before it turns all nasty and kills you ;)

Loads of instant power though, but it does run out of steam at 5000+rpm, but that may be due to the 1.6 box in mine.

All in all its an extremely hyperactive beastie, that reminds you of what cars were like to really drive before ABS, TC, Airbags and any safety really, very old skool and very good fun!

My list of top five hatches would have to be...

1. Pug 205 GTi (A legend, used to be talked about in hushed voices)

2. R5GTT (Stupid idea to Turbo a tincan and its what true hothatches are all about.)

3. 172 (Loads of power and refinement too)

4. VTR/VTS (Superb cars to drive, the VTS has so much wallop for a 1.6 and the VTR although slower is damn good to drive and nicely balanced, like the 1.9 and 1.6 Pug I guess.)

5. MK1 Golf GTi (The granddaddy that started it all, nuff said)

  Clio Williams2

No mention of a Citroen AX GT??? - not the fastest out there and a bit er economic on build strength (thin panels or something, not forgiving in a crash) but very light and fast with low insurance and good fuel economy with 1360 twin choke engine. good for the financially challenged new comer.

What about the mini too, my 998cc mini was immense fun, it was brown and i couldnt see for mist if it rained. I took it for a test drive on a wet day with ma mate, drove round the block and tried a very slow handbrake around a 90 degree bend - instant 180, I was hooked! Also as it only cost me £150 I wasnt scared to get stuck in changing and rebuilding bits - my first adult mechano set!

Not had a Charade Gtti but been in a tuned one - LOL - 1.0 litre turbo madness.

The 16 v Ive owned for about 2-3 months is the first car I have owned where there is enough power...not to say Id turn away more but I can wait a year or 2. Lovin it, I knew the handling would be good as I did have a 1.4 RT and used to drive ma mums 1.2 biaritz which was nice..

A mark 1 escort RSmexico would be nice to have a rear wheel rally thrash in.

so the above is my kind of realisticly available list with 16v at top. also Lancia Integral for ultimate steroid look, Sunny Gti-R, 5 turb, NOT golfs, too heavy. Think F1.

ooh, arse Ive rambled a bit, sorry:oops:

Agree about the AX gt. I bought one when I had just passed my test about 8 yrs ago and it was a top little car. It was quick, handles ok, and only cost me 1100 quid!

My favourites, and I can only talk about what Ive driven and owned are

1. Clio 16v (Never driven a willy)

2. 19 16v. Full leather in mine and totally precise steering. Really good car but shame about the styling, especially the back end!

3. 205 1.6 gti. Drove both and preferred the 1600. No power steering or any luxuries, but quick and ridiculously good round bends. Really stylish car as well, they never dated as quickly as the golfs or fords.

4. Golf Gti MK2 8v. Not as quick as alot of the hot hatches, but it was my first experience of a quality hot hatch. Really well put together and a really nice car to drive. As with the 205, it sounded like nothing else when being driven hard.

5. Really cant make my mind up. The XR2I 16v was a hell of a car, as was the 5 turbo. Ill stick with the 5 I guess.

5.
