What a 182 looks like after you try cartwheels...

  LY R26, LY 182
Hello!

I've just asked some questions in the 'new to cliosport' forum as I'm looking to go back to a 182 from our current Megane R26 to downsize...

However, this was one of the last 182's we had: http://www.flickr.com/photos/59037264@N05/sets/72157625941609581/
Unfortunately one evening the mrs was driving it home and lost it on bend because the farmers had made the road really muddy when leaving the fields. She flipped it at 60 through a hedge end-to-end before landing back in the road on the correct side, just a little worse for wear. She missed all the trees and telegraph poles literally was cartwheeling between them all!

Car was a write off (less than 2 years old at the time) and she walked away almost uninjured (still has a bit of pain in her back now and then). They are safe little cars!

The drivers seat actually broke off its rails and was loose apart from a front bolt holding it in place, and the side airbags blew. You can see in the pics it is quite far back - not how the seat was positioned, that was cos it moved...

Considering she was travelling at 60mph when she lost it (although she can't exactly remember as she blacked out) the car faired pretty well. It did at least two full cartwheels (front, back, front, back) before landing back on the road. The rear suspension as you can see gave out and the springs were actually up in the hedge! A 3" round branch that was about 4ft long from the hedge had speared the passenger side headlight - thank god that didn't go though the windscreen. I found the RoaAngel about 25+m away in the field - it must have been propelled out the back window from the dash.

Just hope no-one is driving around in KT04 EFG thinking it is a nice straight motor :S

Anyway, any advice of what to look out for when buying a Clio 182 (i.e. common faults, issues etc) would be appreciated! :D

Nice.

I'm guessing you didn't have to worry about faults the last timne you owned one so now you're enquiring?

Got some serious lows on the back there.

lol - the extreme way to lower your suspension!!!
Yeah everyone is fine, twas in 2006 just recently found the pics when looking at the pics of our old 182's.

Ref getting her a 1.2, she doesn't really drive much anymore as work is so close for her, but she uses the 1.9cdti vec sri and [gulp] the 2.0T Megane R26 when she needs to drive...!!!

Yeah, they were both under manufacturers warranties last time... btw, the old chap was the recovery dude who collected the car that night - he just kept saying 'how on earth did she dent, scratch or damage every bloody panel!' He was right, nothing was untouched, even the roof had a crease in it! I bet it wasn't even that good for parts (apart from the dash) as the seat airbags ruined the interior and everything else was bent!

Yep - married her ! Although she did kerb one of the 19's on the vectra a few weeks ago, and break the mirror off!!! Nearly got the divorce papers prepared...

Its pretty bad (mud that is) they just plaster it all over the road when the come out and don't give a sh!t. Although, I think the farmer got a b*ll*king as 3 cars went off on the same corner within 2 weeks - there was an increasing pile of bumpers and number plates on the side of the road on that bend (and one was a 172!!!)

That's because of the lack of abs ;)

It really f*cks me off when people/farmers/trucks drop stuff on the road, be it mud, gravel, building debris etc I wish there was more legislation against it.
There is a quarry near me and the state of the road by it is disgusting, you only have to drive down it and your car looks like you've just finished the Monte Carlo rally ffs!

The farmer walked past as I climbed out my car (it was on its side), just stood there staring, not saying a word, I said can I help you? Gave me a dirty look and continued to stare (this was about 2 feet from my car), told him f*ck off, absolute tit.

Fire engine turned up (well 2 fire engines, ambulance, paramedic and 2 police cars, :\) and told me I was the 3rd in about 2 months.

+1

There's a local rubbish tip near me where lorries pull straight out onto a dual carrigeway spilling bricks and crap onto the road, and dragging mud and dirt along with him. It really is disgusting and dangerous, yet nothing gets done.

Similar thing with her, Luckily I wasn't far away so went and met her when she called me. Came up to the wrecked car and my ABS kicked as soon as I touched the pedal it was so slippy. I then called the emergency services as she was bleeding and wasn't making sense so wanted her checked out, (2 fire engines, 4 police cars, and fast response paramedic and an ambulance turned - must have been a quiet night!) and the first on scene was the fast response paramedic in a Honda CRV - he nearly lost it as he came round the same corner the way she was travelling...

Although, to this day I want to throttle the people who stopped after her accident. I turned up and there were two little chav's in a sh!tbox clio RN or something and an older woman. All were standing next to her car, with her although she was pretty spaced out, the first thing the little chav said (after I asked if anyone had called the emergency services - to which they responded that none of them had!) was 'OMG man, yo girlfriend just trashed a well nice car, innit!'. Little tw*t! Anyway, they were all standing there, with the car still running (she turned it on after the accident as she thought she could still drive away and wanted to get it out of the road!), sounding like the engine was eating itself sitting in a pool of its own fuel as the fuel tank split when it landed!!! WHAT MORONS!!! My poor mrs was completely spaced out as she got smacked in the head by something flying around when flipping, and had blood running down her face. It does make you wonder what planet some people are on. Ok, maybe I expected too much of the chavs, but for god sake I expected more from the older lady... Needless to say, I politely told them they could all sod off...

Is it me or did the drivers and passenger airbags not go off?

Both both side air bags deployed, but neither the drivers or passengers airbag went off. She spun it first and hit a high grass verge with the passenger side front wheel (hence the tyre being pulled off and mud in the spokes) which looking that the scene threw the car sideways onto its nose so she hit the hedge with the windscreen, nose facing down, rear up in the air, whilst travelling sideways! It then started to cartwheel, but probably had stalled by this point, onto the tailgate, then back onto its nose, then tailgate again etc before landing on its bottom, less most of the suspension! You could pretty much tell what it was doing as you could see psrts of the front in the first trench it dug, the the rear glass in the next, then parts of the front again in next trench, then the rear light cover and more glass (probably the side window this time)!

At least the dash would have been salvagable, considering the rest of the car was messed up!
