Haha someone suggested they could keep up with a 320bhp Subaru...LOLZ!!! ...and Evo's... DOUBLE LOLZZZZ...and the Scirroco TRIPLE LOLZ...well maybe the last one in a straight line but it whupped the 197 Cup at Bedford Autodrome in the hands of EVO magazine...what was that about twisties?

In fairness id rather have a mk5 GTI over a 1*2. the interior etc is far nicer...although id have to change the wheels ive got to be honest.

LOL it just gets me rubbed up the wrong way when people say they are fat and slow!! I ve had a 182 and a 172 and a V6 and The golf isnt any slower than any of them!! If anything quicker around town due to the Turbo.

As much as I don't like to agree with Tyranical because he's copper and they are all scum ;) I have you say... half of you lot are either out of your minds or simply unable to read and making yourselves look like fools! I think he's had to repeat THREE times that the OP is talking about straight line speed and your all making yourselves look like twits by using the ol' twisties line. lol

in that case GOlf GTi mk5 quicker than a 1*2!!

Some people are anti every other car bar their own.

Im quite open to other cars. Most my comments are made in jest/light hearted. Unfortunately they dont always come across that way when your reading on a forum.

People here think the clio has 'supercar status' tbh so don't know what you lot are on about.

Straight line performance you wouldn't get near:

megane 225 or better
Golf GTI
Focus RS
Astra VXR (and the 888 version)
Mazda 3 MPS
Audi S3
Mini Cooper S Works GP
JDM Civic Type R
the 888 VXR version of the Corsa VXR
Alfa Romeo 147 GTA
Teg

Theres probably more aswell.

Sorry disagree mate,
I'm aware that my 182 isnt the fastest thing on the road but iv had a play with GTI's, RS's & VXR's before and would't say I haven't got near them....(in a straight line as well;))

I've always found my cup has been a quick car if you're nailing it. Midrange is awful, but that's what you get with a n/a high revving hatchback.

Here's some of my experiences, minus the bullshit,

Golf gti mk5 - pulled on him significantly through 2nd to 3rd then we backed off.

Leon cupra R mk1 until over 100 jellybabies then he pulled on me as the clio dies a million deaths after a ton!

Civic type R was exactly the same, you couldn't find a car more simmilar performance wise.

Pug 206 180 - Spanked him hard.

Mg zs 180 - I pulled a few car lengths upto 100, same old story his was strong over a ton.

Bmw 3 series - You'll have any of them minus obviously the M3 and it's equal with the 330. They will destroy you over 100.

Funniest one - Aston db7 (auto i imagine) - he pulled about 3 car lengths upto 100...I can safely say he was supprised. Slate me all you want, there's already been a thread on this one and the noobs were put in line.

Conclusion.
So there you go, a few experiences. You've not got a supercar, but you will have fun in it.

chris p is right about the civic type r, had a quick sprint with one through reading and the civic just had the driver in and i was three up in my 182, was side by side when we pulled away from the lights at the jewel carridgeway and it was when the civic got into forth he started edging ahead. also spanked a mk 4 gti.

Ihad a play with a civic on the motorway and he pulled bettter than me by loads after 100 jelly plops ber min... Longer gear ratios and vtec y0!

  Clio MK 4
its weird because my 172 never beats the cars people mention. thing is if a car keeps up with me i'm usually disapoointed and if they edge me and i mean not by much i take that as i got my ass kicked.

  Focus RS mk1
my cammed 172 matches a meggy f1 up 110 if im honest im slightly quicker to 60, pi$$ed on a corsa vxr pulled few cars lengths, also pushed a standard scooby wrx (05plate) from 40 up to 110, backed of the gas twice.

  Scirocco 2.0 tsi
Where the f**k did the idea that i was a copper come from? FLOL.

People are making some ridiculous claims in this thread, assuming they're not turbo'ed, there is no way in hell any clio17/82 is keeping up with RB320's and evo's. Someone earlier on claimed an M3 too IIRC?

f**king ridiculous, sort your heads out lads, you drive clio's not lambo's and as rapid as the little clio is your off your face on crack if you think you can keep up with some of the cars you people are mentioning (remember the key point in this, IN A STRAIGHT LINE)

Of the normal hot hatch group the car fits in fine and can play with any of them although the list i said are all ones that better you in straight line performance (and i wasn't talking about 0-60 either because thats the most ridiculous way to compare performance ever thought up, i was thinking 30-80+)

I am not making out the clio to be shite at all, they are crackin' cars and punch well above their weight but some people on here seem to think they're driving a supercar and they're just not.

I disagree with the Golf GTi not being compatible with a 172.

The golf weighs 1328kg's and has 150bhp/ton , you could sit and talk about torque all day but then how often are you going to be racing between 95-130?

Personally ive had numerous run ins with Golf GTi's and found them very un impressive. There quick, but i personally think my Phase 1 172 is quicker, dont see why this is so hard to believe, weight is the root of all evil to a performance car.

The Golf GTi is no exception to the rule

My only comparison is with Warren4. His PH1 was as quick/same as my 172 and my VEe (255). I have had tussles with him in my GIT and i pull away after 4th gear. But up to national speed limit there is feck all in it.

Im not stating this to say the GTI is quicker and wow it is wuicker in triple figures, but im saying it isnt fat and slow(like me) like most CS users seem to think.

Torque plays a huge part in performance all the way across the speed band not just at 95mph+. We're not saying that the clio isn't close to the golf, they are pretty close but the golf's got it in the straight lines, throw in some twisty corners and its a different matter but thats all down to the driver then.

  e60 M5 -172- dciheid
The reason why I stated straight line speed was due to the fact that on the open road apart from side roads, corners aren’t a problem for most cars due to the fact they aren’t that twisty and you can most of the time use the racing line safely.
My dad has an old T5 with about 300bhp now if I was to race him from Fraserburgh to Aberdeen on the main road he would abuse me there is only about 3 corners on that road that would cause a problem for him and that’s a 45mile run on a s**tty Scottish road, In most real life situations that’s how the roads would be fair play round a track it would be different, I have drivin that thing round knockhill and on the straights it surprised a few people but on the corners no way I was like a boat with its standard 12 year old suspension lol

do it up to the brock, that way you dont have to slow down for the speed camera..

Im not saying its slow, far from it, i just think the phase 1 is quicker.

Atleast the ones ive had a blast with, this again could be down to poor tyres and driver error/mis-shift if you will...!

Each to there own though, 197bhp @ 1328kg's isnt exactly eye watering is it though?

Absolutley mate but then with the right driver and the right tyres from a standing start i reckon my phase 1 (163bhp/ton) would have it, half a car length atleast, i may be wrong but im speaking from general experience.

Exactly, half a car length, thats a split second delayed gear change difference. The ph1 is a different kettle of fish anyway i know f**k all about them tbh :rasp:

Any self respecting GTI owner should have a remap anyway, and then theres no contest even if the clio's modified. :p

  RS Clio 182
I used to have a wrx before my cup, im not sure which was faster in a straight line out of them tbh think my scooby would have edged it but wudnt be much in it. Really suprised with the cup but it does way about as much as my fart

LoL @ self respecting GTi owner...:)

To put into perspective there very well matched even if the GTi is heavier!

The Ed30 on the other hand, that is a very, very quick hatch! I got my arse handed to me on a plate by one of them, seriously fast!

IMO i was more impressed with that than the R32??
