yesterday I started to paint/tidy up my engine bay, its a start lol

  BMW 320d SE
Got rear ended in the Clio this morning. Boot floor is all folded up and the exhaust system is damaged. If just fixed everything on it too. Sad times.

Clio got taken away on a tow truck and a Mercedes A180 CDI left in its place. Just hoping it doesn't get written off. At least a new rear crash bar and possibly a new boot floor if it can't be flattened out.
 
Just been under the car trying to diagnose a mystery rattle that got worse last night...turns out my gear linkage is rather loose. And so is part of my nearside caliper even though all bolts are tight.
 
Did it yesterday but didn't get round to posting. The Ibiza has been a bit neglected since buying the Clio, so gave her a good clean and a coat of AF Tripple.

gonna run it without the old mangled heat proofing so figured I better have something to protect the cables etc.

Installed 6.5" Focal K2 power 165KRX3 woofer's in the doors. Biggest ball ache ever!

Sound deadening and A-Pillar install for mids and highs coming over the next few weeks.

Done nothing to the car but trying to find the cause of a small bell like sound coming from underneath the drivers side somewhere, it's starting to get annoying since every time I go over a bump it sounds like those Christmas bells jingling.

Got it out of the garage and gave it a quick wash. Remembered exactly why I should always wash the car shortly after a track day and not leave it mouldering in the garage for two months. Bloody squished bugs!!

Now off for a drive :)

It has been a quite one for me but I have been making progress. There is less to change on the car (Steering wheel if I am picky but it is not bad by any stretch, and maybe a front end respray, but again it is not that bad especially for it being a daily and maybe the top engine mount), it is almost feeling strange!

When the car went to BTM Performance Fred commented on the car's great condition but pointed out a few things I should keep an eye on. While most of these have been taken care of the thermostat had not. He reckoned that with a new one the car would run a little smoother and be just so. With the old thermostat the gauge used to sit bang on half way, maybe go under by half a mm or go the other way, where they tend to sit (slightly above halfway). On the basis that winter is coming and there seems to be little evidence of the coolant being changed I went to Renault to purchase some Type D and a new thermostat.

Initially all looks fine:

Errrr, maybe not! The inner thermostat seal had perished and split, causing one side of the seal to expand and come away.

I then filled the engine up with Type-D until coolant came out of the bleed hose when I then filled the coolant to the max and fired it up. It seemed to warm up quicker than previously and the gauge stayed just slightly above 1/2 way without budging at all! On my drive back the coolant level dropped to the minimum where I promptly topped it up once the car had cooled down. I would like to think that the level has settled and all air has come out.

Maybe it is placebo but the car was quite sharp on the throttle which I put down to the remap ; a friend of mine was not too keen about this from his 172. It does seem to be smoother than before as well. The heater is also hotter than before, handy with winter not being miles away and for those cold nights. I had had cars where the gauge does not even approach halfway!

Get some grease or coilover covers on them mate. Looks great though.

If they are stainless bodies it will not be an issue at all :smile:.

How do they compare to what came off in terms of roadholding, comfort and handling? Is your car a Cup or not? I'm going with either going genuine Renault on mine next year or with the Bilsteins.

I forgot to say, I was enjoying driving the RST but the caliper bolt fell out of one of the calipers. Yikes was one word to come to my mind!

The scary thing is that I was debating taking it on a track day a week earlier! The Clio went instead and it was a joy to drive around:

How much is a genuine thermostat fella?

Yeh it's made a huge difference mate they are pretty solid but still comfortable for the road .
Did a long motorway trip with them and made the car me so much more confident at higher speeds if you know what I mean. the the old suspension which actually got abit dodgey when going for it

Corning is also much better with no body roll etc

I don't know how old the old shocks n springs were so couldn't compare to new Renault ones as I've never had it
And the car is just a standard 172

I'm going to try get some covers for the coilovers as a lot of dirt and grit is getting in them and all up the thread which made it hard to adjust them without cleaning them first.
But I definitely recommend them

Only to find the radiator sprung a leak so had to drain it again ready for a new rad
Still Im happy its good progress made and sounds pretty sweet running which is a big rerelief :-D

Hi ,

I didn't take any photos of getting the 6.5" in the doors mate but I can give an overview of what I did.
  • First I removed the door card. This was a pain as the door cards have this seal which is really strong and difficult to get off. I used a flat head screw driver to pry open the door card and then used a butter knife to "cut" the seal. I would wear some gloves too (I didn't), the seal is sticky and hard to get out of nails (does make your hands look manly though).
  • I then got my 6.5" speaker and measured the depth and created a speaker ring using MDF (18mm).
  • Once the ring was cut, I had to cut part of the door card which housed the stock speaker (looks like a cone).
  • The speaker ring was then screwed in using the same torx screws that were holding the stock speakers in. You can make more holes for screws but I couldn't budge the ring at all.
  • As I'm wiring these to a crossover located in the boot, I fed a wire through the door loom and to the back of the car. Using flat speaker cable makes this process a lot easier. http://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B0033GGXVS/?tag=cliospnet01-21
  • I then screwed in speaker in the door and then removed it again because i forgot to actually connect the wires :D
Currently started working on my first A-pillar pods.
