What is recommended

Lo, atm I drive a Nissan Almera 1.4 Si very very reliable nothing has gone wrong in the few years ive owned it (touch wood) Now im thinking of getting something faster and am looking about.

Shortlist: Almera GTi, Saxo VTS, Honda CRX V-Tec and the Clio 1800 16v

I am just wondering if the 1800 clio would keep up or even beat the other cars im looking at. And are they worth the money? Cannot really go above group 14/15 for insurance, or else there would be a williams clio on that list aswell.

Ne help would be much appreciated tnx

paxo is quicker than a clio 16v...

crxs are great fun a m8 had a shed he bought for 150 quid lol just cos his car was in the body shop so he could use it as a run about and said it is 1 of the best most fun cars he has ever had, now has a droptailgate civic the 1.6 vti or what ever it is, and that put out 178bhp standard at a rtoc rolling road day...

Guy at my work selling his CRX!! Its in mint condition and only done 60K! Plus plate that comes with it is H15 CRX, cool i think!! PM me if anyone interested and i can pass on his details, only thing its up here in sunny scotland

Autocar test figures for Clio 16V (1992):

0-60: 7.4 secs

30-70 though gears: 7.1 secs

Top speed: 127mph

These figures are within range of most modern hot hatches, even after the passing of more than a decade. If this is all that concerns you, then I hope youre satisfied. Theres lots of discussion about how "fast" cars are - the truth is that the CRX, Saxo and Clio 16V are very close in the real world. Without offending anyone, the Almera is best forgotten in this company.

Where the Clio 16V trumps the rest is handling and desirability. Youve got 90% of the much loved Williams in a 16V - and its commonly forgotten that the 16V actually exists, let alone that its within a fraction of the Williams in most respects. Ive owned both cars in the past (see profile) and would recommend a 16V very strongly. Like all Renaultsport cars, the 16V was designed and built at Dieppe - in a separate factory from regular Clios.

Briefly, the Clio 16V was the road car for homologation purposes of Renaultsport rally antics in the early 1990s. The 2.0 (Williams) version is still the fastest 2WD tarmac rally car of all time. Even the 1.8 (16V) version was 1.5 seconds per mile faster than the 5 Turbo mid-engined 350bhp Group B car! Such is the ability of the Mk1 Clio chassis.

There are a few good ones for sale at the moment at decent prices. See the For Sale forum and look at The Kirmanator and bjfosteruks cars.

I have fond memories of "Holly":
