Which 182 Panel Filter

Done the induction kit before lots of noise drop in performce (ok it was a cheap one) so decided to go back to the standard box with a replacement filter. Question is which one is best and where's the cheapest place to get hold of it from. Tried e-bay and K&N filters seem to be going for about £35 which isn't too bad then by time postage on top roughly knocks them up to £40 odd which is still not bad really as not got the £300 to spend on a Maxogen Kit (and the other half would probably throw a fit).
So apart from saying buy such and such induction all I would like to know is which panel filter gives best performance for price.

Personally after reading many and many of pages of information on flow charateristics and the flow properties of different materials I think in future I'll just be sticking with a standard paper filter.

1. For best filtration (keeps engine wear to a minimum/prolongs life)

2. Greater surface area (if you unwind a stock paper filter you will see what i mean)

Downsides - They need replacing more often.

So my list would be as follows

Paper - Best filtration and can flow more air due to larger surface area BUT if you straightened out a paper and aftermarket the aftermarket one would flow better

Cotton Gauze - Mainly because they are a lot less greasy than foam filters and are easier to clean out. Also thinner so air can pass over it well

Foam - As my last due to the fact they are difficult to clean and are very greasy which can contaminate engine sensors such as the MAF (not applicable on a clio) But if used on an older car expect bills for new sensors (you can clean them but it is awkward and they break easily) I also (personal opinion) don't think they flow aswell as cotton or paper

I'm not sure why everyone rants and raves about ITG filters - Fine if you use the Induction Kit as the surface area is increased so flow charateristics are not as important. Still would rather a cotton element due to reasons above.

If anyone disagrees with what im syaing then please say

At the end of the day I dont think youd notice a difference between a clean paper element or a cotton gauze one. The only advantage is the fact they are reusable

I dont think a Rolling road could tell a difference either if the conditions for both were fair

^^^^^ completely what I wasn't expecting lots of straight forward info on the materials. Thanks for the information so probably looking for a cloth filter. Was expecting it to turn into a bun fight between Buy K&N or buy ITG or even forget the lot just buy a Maxogen......... Well £300 is still £300 despite how "nice" a Maxogen looks and sounds. Just looking for the best in that feel good factor of knowing what you have under the bonnet when in reality it probably doesn't make a difference which filter but counting the votes on the filter situation.

No problem - I felt like being useful for a change

£300 will get you a full exhaust plus decat (I know what I'd rather have ;))

The best thing you can do on these cars and if you search you will find pics is to move the battery to the boot (easy job really)

Then get a straight pipe running over by the headlight with an open IK or one of those cup racer airboxes as I found out today!

If you really want an aftermarket filter I'd just buy the cheapest that pops up. They come up quite reguarly on the for sale section.

tbh matts right, i disagree over which filter is best, but they make very little difference it really doesnt matter which is best. full exhaust and decat woiuld give fare better gains then a maxogen. however apparently viper and remap can give 13bhp....

  a thirsty one
what work is needed to relocate the battery to the boot, a battery box from demon tweeks is about 40 quid, is it then just a case of running he wires along a sill to the boot and strapping it and securing it.

i assaume the biggest restiction with the air flow is the 90 degree bend which can now be reduced, so a 45 degree samco but what airbox?

Already seen the viper and remap argument that was going on with people throwing their toys out of the pram over it. Will soon be changing the exhaust as its starting to rattle and make some strange noises every now and then particularly at low speed when going up the levels in multi storey carparks. So the exhaust and decat might be a good option.
Diverting slightly-ish is it easy to change the decat pipe back to pass the MOT or would the best option be to buy a sport Cat? And are the benefits really noticeable or is it again just the "feel good factor"?

BHP wont be increased with a decat so there be very little to be gained when the car hits its peak RPM 5000+

The accelaration from 2000RPM+ will be noticeably increased with a decat+Zorst

Interesting. People say the ITG is the best, but thats a foam job. So surely it would be very similar to the pipercross?

If one person says something on here everyone just rushes to agree like little sheep, best thing is to research each material and come to a decision yourself. You can see why I think foam is crap in my reasoning above

Yes I have to admit I went for a green in my ibiza. So why the obsession with ITG on here then? Even the big tuners on here are selling them at silly money. Or are they the reason for obsession?!

I used a K&N 57i when I first got the car, made a lot of noise but engine bay gets to hot after a while and they dull.

I now use a BMC panel filter, almost identical to the ITG ones but a bit cheaper.

easy to clean, cotton guaze and a nice red gel edging.
