Which Clio, 172 MK1/ MK2

Just looking for some general info and help, I currently run a Peugeot 205 GTi, I use it for sprint/hillclimbing in the rd going class, its currently a very competative car and in general wins its class unless a quick Elise turns up and then not always, Im looking to eventualy move on but cant really find a car for its cost that come close at the moment , and the Clio Cup seems the best option! although the revue in TAC didnt wet my appetite on the 182, Ill be looking at a budget of £5000-£6000 but a totaly standard car with no mods and some history etc, what are the weak points, engine, box etc?

The 205 currently produces 160 at the wheels and is a group A 8 valve on 45 DCOE carbs with diff and standard 1.9 box with 4.1 final drive, its driven to events and retains all the stock trim for the class I run in,1B 1400-2000cc.

Any help would be appreciated Kind regards Russ........

  Renault Laguna Coupe

You can easily get a good Mk1 172 for that sort of money. Engine and gearbox are both strong. No serious weak points, just niggly little things, electrics, exhaust, stuff like that.

welcome to Cliosport by the way :)

Box isnt amazing if your going to absolutly hammer it.

Clutch is very likly going to need an upgrade for hard driving a lighened car will mean you might be able to get away with it though.

The only other week points are rattles squeeks and the odd electric gremlin.

They make 166hp or about 144hp at the wheels.

Thanks for the info so far sounds like Ill be at home with this car as the 205 has all those trates, what are the weak points with the box is it synchros? as this is a current problem which Im not too worried about, the Peugeot BE1/3 box is good for 200+bhp and the same torque but loses its synchros when used hard after a while, are there any problems fitting plate diffs etc not the Quaife unit as I use this at the moment, ok for the rd but struggle on left handers when the front wheel goes light at events, they revert back to an open diff set up. The handling is more the area Im looking at how do they perform out of the box! and when you upgrade what is the prefered set up and types of suspension used, Bilstein Leda Koni, sorry for all the questions but I need to see if this would be a way to go before spending on the 205 in the future. Do the Cup cars have PAS? and where if any can weight be saved, Im looking for none of the following AC, CL, EW.

Would it be possible to get a run at a Track day in a forum members car to see how they go and have a talk with a couple of the owners?possibly a standard car and a modified one.

Regards Russ.....
