Which Williams?

  200 cup/Btm'd ph1
I've been looking for a williams for a while now but still can't figure out the differences between all 3 models.

Is there any big differences and is there one that i should look out for, like the first williams for being the rarest.

Also how much should i budget for 1 when looking around i've found some for £6000-7000 but i can only really afford about £4000

£4k should get you a very tidy Willy 1 on low mileage!

2s and 3s are cheaper but just as good if you get one that's been looked after.

I know sod all about them but have a growing interest since having been in a 1*2 engined mk1, from what i gather;

1 - The original, most hardcore, the best, limited, hard to get

2 - Marketing driven, most diluted

3 - Return to slightly more hardcore, prob the best bet to find a nice one at reasonable price.

Now i have no idea what actual changes were made or if thats even accurate above, but will keep an eye on this thread to hopefully find out

More hardcore, less hardcore? Other than cosmetic and electronic differences etc they are basically all the same care, the only argument being the slight weight differences.

Generally though I think a 1 is seen by many as the 'original' and 'proper' Williams, the only one displaying the gold plaque and was intended as the only run at first I believe. However the 3 was the rarest in terms of amount built for the UK (just over 300 I think, compared to nearer to 400 for 1s) and had a few extra bits in. The Williams 2 is seen as less 'special' I suppose but just the same really, the least rare, etc. Both the 1 and 2 were in 449 blue and the 3 in 432 (a lighter shade of blue). The 1 is the only Williams that's a ph1, others were ph2. It's all down to personal preference I suppose.

4k is more than enough for one easily. The best thing you can do is to check the for sale section of the Williamsclio forum, the majority of the members will have taken good care of their cars and understand its real value.

Don't buy that car. I went to see it, its far from MINT. Rear aches where done by someone who is colour blind.

£4000 should get you a mint standard one with below 60000miles. The condition of these is more important than mileage.

bloomin well should be, i was pretty much dead by the time id finished, lol. that stuff is HARD work. :)

I'd buy a 2 on choice as I prefere the wing mirrors. I'd not get a 3 as they have the abs sytem/sunroofs etc.

So I'd look for a 1 or 2 buy on condition though.

  williams and trophy
well, my advice, for what its worth, being probably the longest standing williams owner on here, stay away from the 3s. the roof will buckle eventually, sunroof ffs, its a drivers car ;)

as stated above, main diffs between them are the ph1-2 trim diff.s. but the 2 has door bars etc, which add a chunk of weight.

willy 1 is the only 1 to buy imo. but then maybe im a bit biased with 2 of em lol. and finding a mint one, mint meaning had no bodywork repairs at all,new paintwork can hide a multitude of problems, is going to be really hard now, only 1 or 2 left ;)

mech wise, they pretty much bullet proof. make sure belts have been done etc. pas is usually a bit noisy, gearboxes are weak.

other than that, good luck mate, and i hope you find a good clean one, theres a lot of polished turds out there now, be warned, a bad un will be a moneypit.

Edde how can you prefer the ph2 mirrors over the ph1?! Your mad! :clown:
