Who doesn't love an old Porsche 911

Mr R.

  A special one.
Thought id share a little Porsche 911 project that I've been working on for a while. I was contacted by a good friend asking if I would go and inspect a back date 3.2 Carrera that a friend of he's had not long bought and knowing that I worked for a Porsche specialist for a number of years thought id be interested.
A date was arranged and I headed off to Suffolk to meet the owner and have a chat about the car over lunch, the car is a 1984 3.2 Carrera that had been backdated by a Porsche specialist called Retroworks, the owner wanted a few annoying jobs fixed so he could start using the car.

We went over to where the car is kept and at first glance it looked quite nice, the paint work wasn't perfect but on the whole it looked cool. Darren showed me the things that he wanted sorted but I suggested that it would be best for me to come back another day and do a full wheels off inspection and that way I could give him a list of my findings and we could go from there.

On my return the car was jacked up and the list was done, Darren had told me he had just given £75K for the car so what I found wrong was shocking considering the price of the car. Front wheel bearings noisy, bearing races damaged and hardly any grease, engine oil leaks, long bonnet been made from a standard bonnet with a bit of metal welded on, wrong bonnet slam panel and catch, washer bottle held in with foam, front and rear suspension in bad condition, fuel leaks from the tank, wings going rusty, rear 1/4s full of filler, all lights held in with self tappers, broken seat adjuster, old Moss alarm still fitted but not working, bad wiring everywhere, wrong screws holding the trim in place, front and rear bumpers being made of fibreglass and not steel and being held in with screws, gas struts on the engine lid and bonnet not holding up, door rubbers split, front shocks/legs fucked because the wheel bearings had worn the hubs due to bad adjustment, poorly made copper brake pipes etc etc......

I gave Darren the list and he's response was okay that's fine when can you do the work.

I started by removing the fuel tank and front suspension where it was stripped down for blasting and powder coating, all fixings plated and all bushes replaced with Powerflex heritage items to just improve things a little while still looking like factory rubber bushes.
The plan with the car is to get the car to a standard it can be driven and enjoyed, I will be stripping it down to a bare shell so the panel work can be sorted, sunroof delete and a bare metal repaint.
Once that's done the refurbished suspension can be bolted back and the rest of the car fitted up with other new parts like Singer style door mirrors and a set of back dated clocks so i had to be mindful how far I went with the car considering it will be come apart again.

Front wheel arches were cleaned off, painted and undersealed, oil lines and thermostat was also removed. Front hubs stripped, vapor blasted and new bearings installed with plenty of grease this time.
Once the fuel tank was removed i saw that the rubber fuel lines didn't look to be in the best condition so i had a new pair made up and on closer inspection the fuel tank had undergone a few repairs so a new tank was bought.

I love old 911s. Such pretty cars.

The fact you have your perfectionist hands on one gives me the heebie jeebies. 'Things I'd love to do: Spend an inordinate amount of money completely nut and bolt restoring a 911'. Sadly I totally lack both the time and money to do so.

Thank you buddy for the kind words. I get to drive to a lovely part of the country and lock myself away in the middle of nowhere doing something I enjoy. Working on a car I love with someone else's money, does life get any better. 👌🏻😁

This car is actually finished now, I've been working on his other Porsche which I've just completed, I'll post another thread once this one's up to date. 👍
Lovely car and great work 🙂
Cheers chap. 👍

Needs a spoiler..... 😉😂

fantastic looking thing, some plate too.

Did the guy buy it for 75k or did he pay someone 75k for the work you're having to rectify?

Haha, yeah it's a nice plate Darren has a few.

Darren paid £75k for the car, it has invoices for around £50k of work but God knows where the £50k has been spent then there's my work on top of that.

I've been dribbling over this seeing it on your insta. Fantastic work fella.

I'm really not down with my 911's, how is it backdated? 80's made to look 60/70's?

Hey Tom, thanks mate.

Yeah basically it's made into a older looking 911, impact bumpers are removed and all of the black exterior trim has been polished. Interior trim is also made to look old.

We are going to backdate the dash clocks but this was going to be a 6-8 week wait and a cost of around £2500k and at the time Darren just wanted to be able to drive the car again so it's beetput on hold for now.
originally it looked something like this

so yeah an 80's car made to look older.

That's it mate.
That's simply awesome. Love it.
It's not fast but looks and sounds great, don't really need to drive it fast to enjoy it.

Lovely looking car - shame about the shonky workmanship underneath it all! True with so many restorations sadly. Nice to see it being put right though!

I had a Retroworks potential customer make contact with me through Instagram, he said that he was looking at buying a car from Retroworks but after seeing my post about this car he decided not to go ahead.

I decided to replace the damaged front legs with a pair of Bilstein factory option sports shocks, the rears had already been replaced with a pair of yellow fast road sports shocks so it made sense to upgrade the fronts and paint the rears green to match.

With the caliper fitted I could make up new copper brake pipes to replace the poorly made ones that id removed. How someone could make and fit that and think its acceptable is beyond me.

The fuel tank was installed with a factory Porsche foam seal, new filler neck hose also used. While was working in that area the old Moss alarm was removed and the wiring tidied up the best it could be.

With the front end complete the next job was to sort the oil lines, cooler and thermostat. Like with everything I seem to touch on this car the oil system was no different it was in a bad state through other peoples bad work.
The main hard oil lines were cleaned (because they were covered in underseal) and painted, ideally they needed replacing because the threads have been damaged by someone cutting the old flexi hoses off but at £1k these can wait until the full strip happens.
I replaced a few oil pipes and had to replace the alloy thermostat with a genuine Porsche unit, again because of someone else's bad work.

With that side of things finished it was time to get the car turned around and pull the rear suspension out, I was hoping that it wouldn't be that much work but knowing that the hand brake was only working on one wheel I didn't hold much hope. I took the car out of the garage so that i could clean out the rear wheel arches and wash off the leaking engine to make it easier to see where the oil leaks were coming from.

50549887748_7ebe2d6ae5_c.jpg
IMG_20200817_085453 by Scott Raven, on Flickr

Once back in the garage the rear suspension was stripped down and removed along with the driveshafts and shocks, once stripped it was clear to see that it was all fucked, both hand brake cables needed replacing, hand brake linkages, disc backs, CV boots, roll bar drop links, etc and of course it all needed blasting and powder coating.

Hi Scott! Great to see another project. You’re getting a reputation!

I can’t see where that 75k came from. The 83 targa sc I restored is twice that condition.

look forward to seeing it complete!

Hi mate,
A good one I hope. 😁

Coupe's are worth more than a targa or cab especially when doing a backdate build, had I have known Darren before he bought this car then I would have gone to view it with him and he wouldn't have bought it.

He says now that he would have been far better to have bought a standard 3.2 Carrera and got me to build it for him the way he wanted it, but hindsight is a wonderful thing.
Before he bought this car he went to Silverstone auctions and bid £120k for a Rennsport built car but he got outbid.

I guess when this car came up (it was on collecting car's website) saying it had been built by a supposed Porsche specialist he didn't feel the need to question it so at £75k seemed a bargain, now he knows what the car is truly like the plan is to build it from the ground up but for now he's enjoying the car for what it is.
