Also, any comments on running costs would be good as well :)

Good points bad points.......

Its time i started saving again ;)

Xzibit....was it worth going from a 172 to a 182 its just i plan of getting a 182 in a year or so after the 172, plan on getting either a LY or trophy

  Audi A3 TDI 170 B.E.
I've had a 172 MK1 and then a 182.

Both of which are very cheap to run getting around 38mpg in both cars.

Couldn't seperate and pick one to be better than the other, but the 172 for having a spare wheel IMO. LOL

No bad points along as they are sev=rviced when required they should last for years.

I have, and I prefer the 182 because I think the handling's better but really there's not much in it. The 172 definitely wins a point for having a spare but I think the 182 looks better.

Well, don't expect anything to be different. I am happier with the 182, due to it looking slightly better in my eyes with the cup spoilers and the wheels, and also silver is easier to keep cleaner than black, but at the same time, some times I really wonder why I bothered, as they are the same car, and you don't notice the 10bhp upgrade (well at least I haven't). And not having a spare wheel is annoying. Cornering is better in the 182 though, but you can sort that in the 172 for a few ££.

Maybe I would feel different if I went for a Trophy over a FF, I don't know.

Saw a Trophy in Sainsburys car park, 2 years later on still got it:D
For someone who used to change cars every 9 months that says something about the Tomato;)

Had 2 172's, 1 182. 182 has the better handling out of the box and looks better. Speed, nothing in it, my 1st 172 (mk2) was slightly quicker than my 182. I'd go for a 182, prices for cars with 40-50k miles aren't masssively different, and you can't get 172's in racing blue.

Ihave had a MK1 172, MK2 172 and 182.

Currently have the Mk1 172. Depends if you need/want a newer car....

  172cup
no one is mentioning the 172cup in comparison to 182's?

i've seen plenty people on here quoting that they would go back to the 172cup from buying a 182

Each to their own. I feel the 182 is the better handling car, more stable less roll. But the 172cup does feel quicker and lighter. Think no-one mentioned it as he didn't specifically ask about the cup.

  A4 DTM/iceberg cup
^ ah but as he owned neither, it's worth mentioning

very true i only really found out about it through default. wasn't in the know so didn't know there was one. went to look at a couple and this one was parked in the corner awaitng prep. seen that it was quite tidy and went ofr a drive next day....

True! I always say go and drive them. Whats right for one person isn't for the other. We can give our opinions all day, but until you drive them mate you won't know. Just don't ask a 197 owner, they'll tell you all 1*2's are s**t;)

until you giving them hard time on the tarmac;)

my advise is to drive all variants as they all feel a little different.

  172cup
197 owners should be banned lol.

Same story when i bought my cup, wasn't actually specifically going for it... only when i liked what i saw, test drive it, and then researched it. Driven several FF 172's, and 1 x 182 w.cup packs... and i can honestly say i prefer the cup (cheaper too!)

That's cos they are used to the "barge-like-ness" and can't cope with the sharp handling.

I'd imagine the 172 cup is the one to have out of the lot handling wise, and I think they look the best standard. If you can live without the comforts, which I can't. I damn glad they have heaters though!! ;)

I have owned a 172FF, 172 CUP, 182 CUP and now my Ph1 172. They were all great cars.

172 FF - all the toys but just missing the edge on performance

172 CUP - Felt sharper and more eger but too basic for me

182 CUP - looked nice and it was quick but didn't like the Cup version.

Ph1 172 - combines everything of the above and is cheap as chips.

  Ph2 FF 172
I've got a FF 172. IMO the best car I've ever driven... It's quick, handleing is fine for the every day driver, subtle looks and if driven sensibly, it can be quite economical. I say again... "IF"!

I would for sure. Apparently my old Cup made 190bhp :approve: on a RR session last week!!! Maxogen, GrpN, inlets decat and exhaust. Fookin mint!!! Look best also.

I had a 172 Cup, then a Cup packed 182. 172 looked the best, went the best, and imo is the best MK2 (probebly afer a Trophy, but never driven one). The 182 felt flat, and imo just never hit the spot like the Cup.

Me.

Ph1 172 and now a 182.

I prefer the Ph1 172. Its more of a drivers car. More nimble, you feel more connected to the road and car which gives you an overall better driving experience.

Find me a good one on the same miles as my 182 and i'll be there with the cash in my hand without a second thought.

Had a Ph2 172 and currently own a 182 with cup packs . I prefer the 182 lookswise with the nicer looking wheels and twin exhausts .

I also think my 182 handles slightly better than my 172 ever did . That could be down to slightly lower stiffer suspension wider track and wider and better tyres .

  Peddled device
Had a 172 Cup and now a 182 Cup...

Very little in it performance wise...about the same mpg as well. Both interiors have crap looking seats (though they are comfortable enough) and l don't like the 182 Cup steering wheel.

Prefer the looks of the 182 Cup though...RB is a great colour...and the exhaust finishes it off nicely with a nicer sound imho.

A/C is only used a few times a year but is a major plus when it is :)

ABS / ESP is also good as the car is safer for us non-McRae's (RIP) and so makes the car a tad faster when its wet.

Had a Ph2 172FF them a 182FF cup packs. 182 was better, springs were good and i think it looked better

  Clio 172 mk2
Unless I could afford the trophy I'd be more than happy with the 172...182s just don't do it looks wise

  Did own 172 Cup + 182FF
Had a 172 Cup and now have a 182 with Cup packs.

172 Cup felt faster and had a more pointy chassis with the rear end always alive - I loved that. Interior felt appalling though. 182 with Cup Packs feels a more grown up car and has some nice gadgets other than the stability and traction control which I'd happily lose.

182 suits me better at the moment as it's an everyday runaround car, but the 172 Cup was doing 1 trackday a month replacing my Lotus Elise and was much better for that than my current 182 would be. Not doing any track days at the moment though.

My brother-in-law had a 172 FF at the same time which he let me drive and I believe the 182 with Cup packs and 172 Cup are both a fair bit better than that was in the handling department.

I had a mk2 172ff with eibach springs. After running a couple of different cars for a few years, I now have a Trophy. The Trophy is leagues a head in the handling department. Though the Trophy is way more composed and can carry more speed through the turns, I think from what I remember the handling of the 172 was more "playfull" and its limit more easily accessible. But this isn't to say that the 172 was more fun, its just that I've not had the Trophy long to learn its abilities. I don't miss the xenons or climate control of the 172. Trophy all the way for me and it will be a car that I will keep for a long time.:approve:

  V6 255 Acid Yellow
had the 172 cup and 182 ff, i felt as though the 172 was quicker and imo more fun to drive. Then had a vee, that kicks both there butts but im going of topic now lol

  172 Cup
i have not owned a 172 however i had a test drive in one after the other and there was not alot in it, however the 182 does feel a bit more racey, and handles a bit better, i think the 182 looks better hence why i got one!

  182
Had a 172ff and now have a cup'd 182ff. Prefer the looks of my 182 but prefered the monaco blue of my 172. Performance wise, the 182 has a bit more low down poke, but its very similar. I just wanted something a bit newer as it will need to last me. I miss monaco though :(

  LY V6 with Recaros
I've not owned a 172, but I've driven one and they feel pretty much the same only the handling seems quite alot better on the 182 with cup packs.
