Will any garage Repair Maifold-Cat Join properly?

  RB 182 FF
Hi,

My 182 has the whistling sound that I have read a lot about on this forum - I have confirmed that the exhaust is blowing from manifold-cat join which needs replacing and is getting worse.

The parts are £25 on ebay - I don't want to get ripped off by my local Renault dealer so I wondered if local garages/exhaust places would have the knowledge to fix this join - Or do I have to use Renault to ensure that they use OEM parts?

My nearest Renault specialist (recommended) is in Sevenoaks and I was recently there to have the timing belt replaced and dont fancy the 80mile round trip unless completely necessary. They said it could be 1-2hours labour due to the difficulty in getting to this section of the exhaust properly and up to £50 for the part.

Whilst Im on this - I also need to change both rear discs (wheel bearing knackered and squeeling brakes) is this more urgent? I only do about 50miles a week and whilst the whistle is REALLY annoying since I like to hear the engine rather than a kettle boiling, I worry that having a dodgy bearing could cause problems.

Thanks
NJ

Buy original is what u`ll be told, thik there only 22 quid, try wests on here to supply or yer local.

any garage should be able to fit it tbh.

Cat to manifold gasket kit - 6000073668 - £23.07

http://www.cliosport.net/forum/showthread.php?644457-New-Cat-to-Manifold-Gasket-Kit-Fitting-Guide

As for 50 fitted you sure that wasnt quoted for a diff gasket fitted.

if yer bearings are gone u`ll hear a drone/hmmmmm noise when driving. think i paid 200 few years ago for new discs bearings and pads. squeaking brakes wouldnt worry about depends on pads and set up u have

Cat to manifold for my ph 2 172 was about 27 from renault if i remember rightly.

I took mine to the local halfords garage and they done it for a fixed quote of 30 quid, it took the polish fitter 3 hours!!!

Thanks for the replies:
Yes I believe that this is what causes the whistles. When I was in the garage having the belts done, they had a fiddle with it and now its....worse so it must be that.

There is also another whistle which comes from the drivers side wing mirror - check its not that Addicted!

Will places do a fixed quote for fitting? I was worried I would take it somewhere and it would take them hours because they dont know 182s etc and then I would end up with a massive repair bill. There is a ATS Euromaster nearby, might they do a reasonable job?

The wheel bearing is definitely gone it buzzes a fair bit particularly when doing right turns - NSR?

It's definitely not the wing mirror, though that does whistle at times.

For me it sounds more up in the engine like the inlet manifold has a small gap or something, will have a look today tbh!

the 182 kit fits lower down compared to 172, so should be easy to fit, dare say possible by yer self.

the drivers side wing mirror will has it has a hole for the temp probe for other countries.

yes most places will offer a fixed price.

buzzes? jack car up and see if theres any play in wheel, check arch liner hasnt dropped down a bit

  172 Exclusive,
I'm taking my Cat off today and replacing it with a De-cat from K-Tec, luckily a have a mate with a pit in his drive so should make the DIY job a bit easier, looking forward to hearing the difference, not a job for doing if all you have is axel stands.

Yes i aggree the 172`s gaskets behind the engine, but the 182 is lower down, so axle stands would be fine

Why take it to a garage to get done? Even with axle stands and a jack its a piece of piss!! Would take 30 mins tops to change the mani-cat gasket

  RB 182 FF
I would try and do it myself but I don't really havanywhere to work on it or any of the right tools. I don't have Axel stands either so the way I see it the time I've bought all that may as well get someone else to have a go probably.
Cat to centre pipepipe is a good shout as well from.looking at im convinced the whole lot is blowing !

I also have a whistle with my decat, its alot worse with my cat but its still apparant. Brand new gaskets fitted also, and K-tec even fitted it whilst they put my decat on whilst I got my cambelt done also and it's still there :(

theres loads of places it could whistle from. my old smashed up undertray used to as a set speed.

Thanks for all the replies. IM going to get the gasket replaced this month and I'll let you know what happens as it might help some of you guys work out what the whistle is. For the record since the garage fiddled with it it has become more of a wooshing almost exactly over 3000rpm.

Hi guys,

Now I am a fully fledged member - I can view the guide and have decided to give this ago myself as my mate is lending me his garage for the afternoon on Saturday. If anyone has any last minute tips to ensure that the join works correctly I would appreciate it.

Also I wanted to replace the cat to centre join as well, anyone got the part number for this? Need to order the bits from Renault today!

Thanks a lot.

The cat to centre section doesn't have a part as such. It's just a normal exhaust clamp. I used hight temperature silicone to seal it as well.

It's really easy to do mate so you should be fine.

Thanks a lot mate,

I noticed you did the guide thanks a lot - l'll let you know the results!

Cheers

Update:

Fitted the part today, thanks to the guide it took virtually no time at all. On inspection there was a crack under the cat-centre join which was also blowing. Welded that up and now the car sounds so much better. NO WHISTLE!

However now the silencer is blowing - need a new silencer section. Probably going to go with OEM because I cannot stand the sound of modified exhaust. Ive done loads of searching for quiet ones but none of them seem quiet enough for me.

Thanks again
