was using my laptop this morning and normal, it frooze and i got a blue screen.

laptop restarted and i got a failed to start error. after spending 2 hours going through the startup recovery tool i managed to get it back up and running, but now i will only log me onto a temporary profile where all my stuff is missing.

how do i get back onto my normal profile?

I had this a year or so ago and ended up setting up an OS on another hard drive, and transferring my old stuff over, although that was in my desktop. I suppose you could use an external case or whatever it's called (can't remember for the life of me) for the old one. Not the cheapest way but at least you start off with a nice fresh drive.

Have you tried to system restore to another previous point?

Andy have you gone through the eventviewer to see what error messages were thrown up? It may point you in the direction of whatever caused the BSOD in the first place.

no idea??

i just need to know whether to just copy everything to a new profile or i need to reinstall windows?

im i dont if this is a big issue or not?

I'd suggest reinstalling, just copy your user stuff obviously. Who knows what you have done.
Try command prompt and enter: sfc /scannow on another user see if that fixes anything

Sounds like the profile is corrupt, so its trying to load a backup/temp profile.

You need to go the registry and go to "Hkey local machine/software/Microsoft/WindowsNT/CurrentVersion/ProfileList" and then find your profile on the left hand side in a list, check the State value. This should be 0. If it isn't, change it to 0 and give it a reboot and see what happens.

I recommend using Norton Ghost and create a mirror back up on monthly/weekly basis on separate partition. If problems occurs you can recover your whole system as it was before back up, if you cant start your computer you can use recovery flash drive or disc.

Don't forget the service pack install after all those updates then even more to follow :D

Do you have any idea what is happening? Is this a retail PC/laptop?

Without paying for anything I would leave system restore points enabled which it should, then create a new partition on your hard drive and use it for backup anyway you want.

But how old?
I would check to see if your RAM is ok. Do you know how to do this?
Search memtest86+ on Google and download it either 32 or 64bit version, put it on a disc and run it from turning on your laptop see how that goes mate.

um a fair few years old now

upgraded ram so its not the original ram, but again could be 3-5 years old

Yeah full hardware check would be a good idea. The c0000006 is an in page error so it looks like its gone to grab something that's valid but paged out, coupled with the I/O error almost certainly hardware.
