Windscreen scratches - what's repairable?

  Iceberg 172
What I thought was dried dirt smeared across the windscreen turned out to be fine scratches in the glass - clearly the previous owner decided to clear some gravel away with the windscreen wipers or something

In fact, in direct sunlight the whole glass seems quite 'crazed' with fine scratches, but the main ones are visible as 'white' in all dry weather and quitedistracting in sunny driving conditions. On close inspection, they are up to a foot long following the curve of the wipers are are made up of 3-4 fine groves close together.

I see that there are glass repair kits around - does anyone have any experience of how effective these are?

Or should I just put a brick through it and phone autoglass....? :rasp:

Without distorting the glass you will struggle to remove any real defects.

Centre punch and Hammer ....

That's a hi-tech brick ;)

So you can't do the equivalent of T-cut to glass then?

I might give the repair kit a go to see if I get any results with minimal hassle. It's difficult to judge how big a problem it is - some days I don't even notice the scratches (never in the wet), at other times there are 3 or 4 lines that look like dried winter salt does when you wipe the windscreen and run out of washer fluid...... :-/

Nothing to lose giving it a try, but removing even minor marks out of glass takes so effort and doing this the risk of distorting the glass is high. Mostly looks worse.
