Wiring an SPA 3 Shift light for track car 172 Cup

  Radical SR3
I haven't taken a look at the wiring yet, just posting to see if anyone else has done the same.

As my car is completely stripped inside and only running the top of the dash, I was thinking of just taking a feed from the wires to the rev gauge in the dash for the rev signal...has anyone else done this and if so, which wire (to save me testing for it) is the one to feed from?

I tried this when wiring my Alpha sequential light. The Tacho signal is yellow, but its not a direct rev signal, its a signal from the ECU, and its frequency is lower than what would be considered 'normal' so it depends on if your shift light has a suitable adjustment. Most dont, most will just allow for 4,6 or 8 cyl, which unfortunately works against you.
Based on guidance here I picked out a wire from the DISPAC signal that appeared to work. However I now find this must recieve interference from something as occasionally (usually on lift off after full throttle) it lights up like a christmas tree!

Thanks for the reply, I guess I can splice the yellow wire to the binnacle and see if the SPA works...failing that, what's the DISPAC signal? I don't want to have to run a wire to the coil lead if I can help it as I've cleaned up all the wiring after fitting the RS2 :(

I'm hoping to try the binnacle wire (solid yellow) in the next few days. Can anyone tell me which wire from the coil pack I should use for a signal if the binnacle wire doesn't work? I'm assuming the coilpack wire comes into the car for the ecu at some point? there must be a wiring diagram somewhere!

Anyone know?

If its the same as my r26 you have to either run it from an injector or Coil. Never really liked the idea of slicing into one of those wires though.

Thanks Dan,

which colour wire is my question and where inside the car does the wire end up...I'm happy to splice into one of those wires inside the car but don't fancy extending the wire to the rev gauge and then securing it in the engine bay.

Ideally I'd like to know 'it's the yellow/grey wire on pin xx at the ECU' or something similar :)

As above, tacho is CAN so you cannot splice the SPA into the dash loom directly. You will have to take a feed from the ignition i'm afraid but it's both easy and safe to do so. Read the SPA instructions and it will tell you what wires need to go where.

Thanks Mick. The SPA doc (basic instructions) simply say red wire - coil, green and black to earth.

What I want to know is which colour wire do I need to splice with the red wire and can I do it IN car, not running a wire to the coil pack plug and slicing in there.

Any "trigger" will do which on a 172 (I believe) is any wire BUT the thick white (That's the coils +12v)

Thanks for the added info Mick,

You don't happen to know (before I try to trace a wire back by sight) where these wires start in the car? on my old car it was just splice into the feed to the binnacle.

Coil triggers are all in the engine bay I'm afraid but are easy to pull back from the plug

Bloody renault :) thanks again will sort it out...

So just to clarify any wire from coil pack lead apart from earth and 12v feed. I will earth the shift light to the coil pack earth.

Earth the shift light to earth, connector the signal wire the to the coil signal. I linked mine to the Orange one, however I linked it by the ECU, so the wire wasnt trailing accross the engine bay. However as stated above, either the signal isnt right, or im picking up intereferance as my shift light lights up more than it should.

Ok, an update.

I've run the single wire through the bulkhead to the coil (3 wires...didn't realise that! white is 12V+ orange and pink? which trigger the 2 cylinders each). I've tapped in to the orange wire for the feed and now need to wire the 2 other signal wires from the SPA shift gauge to the chassis (doing this in the cabin/dash) and that SHOULD be it. Just need to set the gauge to 2cylinders.

Will post pics when I'm done.
