Nest

Been wanting to get some Nest equipment for a while but it's something I never had the spare money to invest in... however my smoke detector recently died so have decided to buy myself a Nest Protect.

Probably a waste of money in reality but it looks cool and I just enjoy gadgets! It's cool you can connect it up to Hue bulbs and there's IFTTT recipes to explore.

Wouldn't mind getting their thermometer at some point (they've just released a new, cheaper version) and I see a doorbell has recently been revealed.

So anyone else thinking of investing into Nest or anything similar?

Wicked, has it actually saved you money lol?

So... I'm kind of new to home electrics. I went to install this earlier, but still measured 26v on the connector after throwing the fuse switch. Is this safe to work on? Can't find any definitive answers by Googling.

I've got the thermostat and smoke alarms. Not the cheapest in the world but they are great. They are about to release a door bell with camera which I might get at some point.

If you've switched something off at the fuse-box and you're still getting voltage, it's likely it's not off.

Well it still had voltage after the 'smoke detector' circuit breaker was switched off... but then I decided to switch off the main breaker and it's down to 0v :)

Been looking into the cameras myself along with the new cheaper thermostat which I don't think they've released uk pricing for yet.

I was thinking Nest or Hive.

I am waiting for November, hopefully black Friday may have some deals as Amazon will be pushing home automation.

Anyone in here had the outdoor CCTV? Got zero help from people in the actual CCTV thread. I guess it's like someone asking about a MBP in a PC thread.

My guess on that one is someone has spurred the smoke detected off a ceiling rose for a light. Try the light circuit for wherever the smoke detector is.

The reason I started going with Nest rather than Hive was because it's Google owned (well, Alphabet)

Expecting more and more integration with other Google stuff. I'm interested in getting the Google Home Mini because it's such a good price... I just don't fully trust these generally non-technology companies trying to jump on the bandwagon. I could be completely wrong though! As I know Google have a habit of dropping stuff too; time will tell I guess.

just had a look at those sesame door locks, is it worth because it looks like it's totally worth it haha
In one sense it's a waste of money. But in another sense, totally worth it. Baller.

Was talking with a Hive sales guy yesterday, think I’ll be looking to get Hive/Nest thermostat once I’m in my place.

We have had NEST thermostat for about 3 years. its a great bit of kit and evolving with software updates, geolocation so sets the temp to on before you arrive etc. Recently bought and Echo Dot for my sonos, so I can now ask Alexa to set the temperature etc. if you get one, I doubt you'll be disappointed, bit like apple stuff, just works!

Just got a Nest thermostat installed today :) it's great apart from one problem... which is I can't get hot water without the heating being on! Googled it and found someone else with the same problem; hope it can be resolved.

Got a question though: Using Farsight, it seems to have two settings? First glance shows me what I want (current temperature) but when I get closer it switches to showing me set temperature, which I'm not interested in seeing?

Have you got a combi boiler?

I went to a job the other day and the heating worked fine. The chap would turn his hot water tap on and he couldn't get hot water unless he pressed the button on the hub next to his combi boiler. I found that it had been wired incorrectly.

Same sort of thing then. Found someone else with the same problem on Google too... spoke to my plumber, he thinks it's a wiring issue. Admitted it's been 3 years since he installed a Nest lol. Hopefully be sorted soon. It's a shame you can only set one schedule per day, though I am looking forward to it's learning bit!

Do these offer zoning for individual rooms?

My friend suggested Honeywell as you can do room zoning so not to waste energy heating rooms not used much.

Was thinking of replacing our HIVE thermostats with Nest ones. We had to go with HIVE when we moved in last year as Nest didn't yet offer a multi zone setup. Now they do and HIVE doesn't play well with Google Home apparently ie. it doesnt work.

I think if you’re wanting a lot of zones (ie rooms) then the Honeywell system or Tado have radiator stats which allow each rad to be a different temp if you wish.

That’s what my mate said, Rrp is a lot higher but he’s in the trade so hopefully get a good chunk off, It’s not a big house but with just 2 of us there will be rooms we’re not in much.

Nest does do multi zone but you have to have a thermostat and heat link for each zone meaning it can get very expensive! I'd love another one in the babies room so he doesn't overheat.

Anyway... had the rewiring done today and it blew the boilers circuit board :( so was back to no heating or hot water tonight. Plumber can't work it out! Wired it to Nest spec first and I didn't get hot water without having the heating on, then this time wired it to boiler spec and the hot water worked but when he turned the heating on it blew!

Said he's going to phone both companies tomorrow for support.

Looking to get nest for my new house,
We have oil central heating tho. Will it still work with it?
And easy to install or is it better to get someone to install it?
And is it better than hive?

Even my plumber messed up the initial install and it ended up blowing the PCB in the boiler! So for me, f**k the hassle I'd always get a professional to do it (it was something about having to wire it into low voltage mode, which isn't mentioned anywhere in manuals)

Did it myself yesterday. Get someone else to do it lol.
What a f**king ballache. Had to bodge a lot of stuff as I lost power to the boiler completely. Turns out I did need both cables coming from the old programmer to power it after I cut the cable to use for the heat link.
Took about 3 hours and had to leave it like this until I can rewire it all later today when I get home.

I’ve got nest and love it, installed it myself and I’d say it was straightforward, spent a bit of time reading the installation manual then went for it and it seems to work. I took the existing programmer off the wall and compared wiring to match nest, just take your time and I’m sure you’ll figure it out

Bump.

I’m looking at smart heating for my new house - our last house was electric storage heating so I’m pretty new to it all...

In this house, we have a combi boiler, and two thermostats: one for the living room, and another for the rest of the house.

I like the design of the round Nest thermostats, my parents have a Hive (I think) but I have no idea what would be best for my heating / hot water system. As a complete novice, I have zero ability to deduce their individual capabilities, especially based on my needs!

Isn't selectively heating rooms in a house asking for condensation problems?
It’s a new build, so wouldn’t imagine so? Living room is the only standalone room though, and it has French Doors with trickle vents, so I would’ve thought that condensation wouldn’t be a massive issue?

The rest of the house is in one single zone, controlled via the other thermostat.

Did you get anywhere with your quest?

I took the plunge and bought a Tado during Amazon Prime day(s) plus three radiator thermostats. My reasons for going Tado were...

- I wanted geofencing. I was finding that there were good chunks of time - with my old thermostat - where we’d be out but the heating was on. This was mainly at weekends but occasionally during the week as well. So the standard schedule programming wasn’t giving me enough flexibility.

- I was finding that upstairs was getting uncomfortably warm during the winter. This was purely down to the thermostat being downstairs so that where the demand for heat was coming from. This is where the radiator thermostats come in. The bedrooms. Are set to be at 18C and based on the graphs that are generated, the demand for heat has been near zero since I turned the system on a few weeks ago.

At the moment I have the house split into four zones. Master bedroom, bedroom2, bedroom 3 and ‘the rest of the house’ (everything else). My plan is to add three more radiator thermostats. One for the living room, one for the dining room and one for the kitchen. I’m holding off doing that at the moment though because the layout of the house will be changing soon. We’ll be adding a wall between the living room and dining room, then much later the wall between kitchen and diner will come down. So the way the house heats will change.

Flaws with the system? Umm. I wish it had a boost function. There has been one or two times I just wanted a blast of heat but you have to then manually takeover the system and then return it to automated after. I guess another ‘flaw’ is that if there is a demand for heat in a bedroom, the radiators in ‘the rest of the house’ also come on. That’s just down to the fact my radiators are all on the same ‘circuit’ with the heat being demanded locally. With that said, if it’s cold upstairs it’ll probably be cold downstairs, so having them on isn’t a problem to me.

The heating has only been turned back on in our house for the past two weeks however I have been impressed thus far. The real test will be at year end during winter but early indications are good. Using the history graphs you can already see the system is learning when to turn the heating off so it doesn't overshoot. The claim is that Tado will save you its purchase price within a year. Whether it’ll be that good I don’t know but based on the short slice of evidence thus far I’m confident it’ll make some savings.
