Ok, so! It looks like we are systems go with the new car. Starting with getting the tyres fitted to my Turini’s today! So thought (in my excitement) I would post a before side shot. I’m really conscious the tyre fitter jacks the car up properly . As this car has arrow straight jack points and I’d like to preserve that as long as possible.

reality is I will probably just take off the stickers, then follow a rabbit warren of problems and realise I bought another crap car and sell it for less than half I paid for it...😂

New one looks so clean! I am liking this black dials thing too.

Cracking base car for a project mate and agree 100% mileage on these is no reflection of conditon. Mines just about to clip 129k and ive seen some right sheds with less than half that number.
Also agree silver, lowered on anthracite wheels looks absolutely stunning.

yeah, callipers will be done ASAP! I think it’s on record my hatred of painted OE callipers. Looks oK if you have a nice sent of posh ones otherwise silver or black! To be honest I had forgotten these were painted until you reminded me! Shocking.

Those eagle eyed will notice only 3 wheel bolts...typical Renault locking wheel key looked a bit of a mess. So I told the chap not to refit. Pretty damn chuffed. However couple of things now apparent. The car has Eibach ‘black’ springs fitted. However I think it needs a touch more ‘drop’ secondly needs some spacers.... 🤔

That looks really smart. Do yourself a favour and dont go any more than 5mm spacers on the turinis. Due to the chamfer in the rear of these wheels, you cant run a laregr slip on spacer or you have nothig to locate the centre of the wheel on.
The experts of the internet will tell you its okay to centre the wheels on the suds alone but this is both crap and unsafe. The wheels atud are not designed to take lateral loading, theyre only there to stop the wheel falling off. So the central hub location is important.
The next jump after 5mm is a 15mm hubcentric, yes they look smart but they drive crap.
Fitted mine and took them off.

Your call, just my opinion.

That’s great advice thanks @frayz I was going to go pure hubcentric to be honest, should have been clearer! with a pure stub axle kit on the rear. But I’ll take on board your comments and leave as is for now. I don’t want to ruin what is a superb handling car. Will see how I feel about how it looks over the coming days as I start to put my touch on it. I have plenty to be getting on with! I’d like to do a stud conversion at some point as well. But until that point I need some new wheel it’s now I have sling the crappy Renault lockers. Any recommendations on go to brands that won’t rust whilst sat in the garage?

Unless you go Ti then all the studs are motorsport items and just high grade steel. All of them will corrode I’m afraid. Giving them a liberal wipe of ACF50 will certainly starve off any corrosion for a good while.
If you stay with bolts then the Polarised items from TPI seem to stay nice for a long time.

Up to you on the spacers dude. I just know if i certainly wouldn’t go any more than 10mm up front but as said with the large 6mm chamfer the Turinis have, a 5mm slip on is all you can fit and keep contact on the hub nose.

Cheers mate, like I say considering them is some way down the line now. Just think it would look a little better slightly spaced. But I’m not overly precious and would take advice from chaps like yourself.

They’re not expensive so feel free to try them. You can always sell them on as the youngsters are always up for a bit of style over substance. 😂

That’s sealed it then! If the young guns are at it, at near 40 years of age I’m going spacerless! I don’t need to impress young lads... and chicks won’t be turned off by the stance...the old bloke in a shitty old Renault would be enough to do that.

I’ve got 10mm slip ons with the 2118s (ET43) as they have a tiny 2mm chamfer so still locate. My new wheels are ET38 and will probably run with a 5mm spacer. This is combined with the roll centre kit will bring the front out 10mm without messing up the scrub radius and will align with the 10mm rear axle spacers. If I could get a 5mm rear axle spacer I’d drop them in slightly but I haven’t found any just yet.

Agree with Frayz my flamer is on 89k...not such a pretty sight, yet.

As for spacers I've got 15mm hubcentric fronts with camber bolts and 10mm PMS stub axle rears, drives lovely to be honest.

Couple of small updates. I’m looking forward to getting cracking on some bigger jobs! Sadly I have started a new project at work which is eating all of my spare time, plus Dad duties have come into full force! It appears my 15 year old has more of a social life than I.

had some parts left over from my first aborted attempt at freshening up a clio.

First up I replaced the cabin pollen filter! Glad I did it was full of detritus! Whilst I was there I cleaned under the scuttle and treated the parts with some autofinesse revive, I will be sorting the other side out hopefully over the coming week, making sure the drain is clear and removing the head lamp washer pump connections to support the fitment of my carbon blanks

Next up I planned to swap the bonnet catch which was minging, however notice some small area of rust on the underside structure of the bonnet. Most of the cavity’s seem to have been waxoiled so I have no rusting on the actual bonnet skin. I’m tidying the localised rust spots now which has stopped me replacing the catch, whilst I’m at it I’m cleaning the bonnet up. Which will be the likely first stage of an under bonnet tidy.

I’m nothing but predictable! Loads planned on the car this weekend. Wife had forgiven me the time...call Friday night from the chap who is repairing our roof “I’ll be there in the morning” goodbye to the driveway. Sunday I had planned to work on the car following bike ride...only to be told the toilet flush is broken! All fixed which meant I had a few hours tinkering time, before heading to the pub.

Im not great at remembering to take photos and when I do they are blurry or shaker AF. Apologies.



first up I had to get rid of this horrible fried egg bulbs in the rear clusters. Nicely I had been given a voucher by eBay so this little upgrade was free! Tidied up the back end massively. Also fitted a smaller aerial, I had been struggling to find a smaller aerial that fits the OE base properly.

Then moved to the front of the car and started to fit my carbon washer blanks! Turned out to be a ball ache. Precious owner had replaced the OE bumper bolts with stainless nuts and bolts, which meant my shovel hands struggling to get them off! So that’s something to add to the list. I will be buying a rivnut gun to make a better solution to ease removal of the front bumper at some point. I looped the washer hoses together with the correct fitting and taped to ensure no leaking, at some point I’ll disconnect the pump and drain the pipes to stop future stale water issues. Whilst I was messing around the front end I used a Meguairs head lamp restoration kit as the headlamps had gone a milky shade of yellow, nice and easy to do and results look great.

Moved inside the car next, fitted my new floor mats, my in-laws had bought me for my birthday, an alloy foot rest (long old story) and found my passenger side door speaker wasn’t working, so re-wired that (badly)

Finally removed all the bloody stickers, and cleaned the car for the first time. It came up really well. Gave it a coat of Maguiras ceramic wax and finished plastics with Autofineese plastic whatever it’s called.

List of jobs is obviously growing. But over the next week I need to sort the small rust patches on the underside of the bonnet structure.



Job list:

  1. Drop side skirts treat sills (jacking points straight but surface rust showing
  2. Source and replace missing engine tray
  3. Clean arches
  4. Fix rusty filler and treat under arch
  5. Paint the brake callipers
  6. Fit new shorter boot struts
  7. Coolant flush and new type D with new header
  8. Fit new dials and carbon dash inserts
  9. Rehang exhaust as it’s worse than my teeth for alignment
  10. Battery box/cover on order
  11. Source new silicone induction hose to loose chrome 90 and standard induction pipe
  12. Engine bay needs cleaning!
  13. Fit new 3/4 plates (current ones are too busy)


Jesus it was meant to be a simple wiping of arse this car!

So yet again planned to spend some time on the car this weekend, yet again the time was chopped in half with family, new fridges being delivered etc. Still managed to get a few bits done.

First up I have started the journey of reverting back to factory plastics. The previous owner had painted everything Anthracite. It actually looked ok in places, but the finish on the dash was not great. I managed to find a used top Dash, locally for free which once destickied was great, also picked up an interior plastics here for free and swapped out the door handles once they had again been treated to ‘elbow grease’ thanks to @Cads for supplying me a messy Climate panel, it meant I could actually make one good OE looking one for very little money indeed. I’m still missing the bit of trim that sits below the radio and a hazard panel, which I’ll hopefully sort of the coming weeks.

Whilst I had my top dash put I went about fitting my new dial kit I purchased off @Mbeau It came already fitted to a clock set, however I wanted to do things properly. So went about stripping the dials down. I had previously purchased a dial set from a base model clio as I prefer the matte black surround, so with 3 clock sets in pieces I managed to cobble together a pretty nice looking setup. I have to say I wasn’t initially sold on the look when the dials arrived in the post, but fitted with the matte black surround they look really, really good.

Finally on the interior front I fitted my real carbon dash inserts and my carbon gear knob my mate made for me. (Excuse the mess from fitting)

Sunday I managed to grab a couple of hours, whilst wife was at the in-laws with the kids.

I had purchased a battery cover from a chap making them on Facebook. Quality is brilliant, however I was a bit miffed that it’s made out of steel, expecting it to be made out of alloy...regardless I am where I am with it for the time being and I can’t grumble too much as it looks smart enough! I made some new brackets to ensure the induction kit doesn’t rattle around too much

oh and fitted a nice rubber bung on the acoustic valve port thanks to @frayz for supplying me one, the best over and cable toed hose was hammering my OCD every time I lifted the bonnet.

final job for the week was removal of the OE badges and fitment of a newer style Renaultsport badge. I prefer the cleaner look with less badges and stickers everywhere so pretty happy with that.

I will continue to tidy up under the bonnet over the coming weeks. Next upgrade will be some Proam exhaust brackets as mine look well past it and the exhaust is more misaligned than my teeth (I’m from Gloucestershire, so it’s a genetic thing) oh and new number plates are ordered!! I can’t cope with how busy the current ones are on the car!!

Really easy mate. I paid £10 delivered for a set of 1.2 clocks. It’s a 5 minute job once you have the dash top out! Which of you have never done before is worth doing as it’s normally filthy behind there!
I actually replaced the dash top when I first got the car so I’ll find the cluster now 👍

Really? The jury is still out for me with the colour. I think I want the Turini’s refinished in Silver. The company I work for owns a wheel refurb business, but they are flat out at the moment, but have just bought some more land to expand. So I may get them done in the future. Trouble is there is so much I want to do to the car and need to budget for the big service next year!

Sorry Dom I should’ve mentioned in my post. I had the pleasure of meeting you and your lad! Actually nice to have someone to talk old cars with semi localish. I have met only a few now! Need to get a plan together for a Breacon drive out at some point. When our cars are working!

Not a huge amount to report this week, work on tidying the engine bay continues. Throttle body was next on the agenda, aged of the delivery of my new induction kit from JMRS. I was happy to see the TB internals relatively clean (my last car it was like a smokers lungs) a quick wipe around with carb cleaner to care of the muck present. Then masked up and gave it a lick if VHT silver paint, followed by Autosol polish of the ring (sounds wrong) came up really well. Whilst I was there I remove the engine lift eye and gave that a proper rub down and repaint as the previous finish wasn’t great.

Bit of a boring on this and yet again I show my absolute lack of artistic flair with an iPhone camera! So apologies! The number plates really bothered me on the car when I bought it. They were quite new but were super busy and looked like they had bounced off every shelf in the Halfords ‘rip speed’ stick isle. So I managed to get Proplates to make me some plain plates with a subtle ‘Renault Sport’ detailing. Front place is the 3/4

Oh and I had the Dash out of the car again fixing the clocks, I’m a complete nugget and in my excitement to get my new dial kit in I managed to reinstall the fuel cage needle about a cm below the minimum line, the temp gauge at about the temperature of a McDonalds apple pie and let’s just say 0-60

Would’ve taken a while. All now sorted!
Over the next week plan is to finish off the dashboard sticky (hoping I have finally found the missing bits to my jigsaw) continue on the engine bay, start on the wheel arches and brake callipers - death to the yellow! Then I need to start considering the exhaust...I have been putting this off as I remember vividly the pain of the bank end refresh on my last car and I really don’t want to go that route with this! ProAm exhaust mounts will be ordered in the next week or so. Think I’ll stick with what I have exhaust wise until next year. I fancy a pure motorsport system, but I’m holding out for more feedback as to CAT reliability for MOT and general noise. I’m getting dangerously close to 40 now and suffer with some hearing issue. So want to make sure it’s what I want before splashing out.
