Moffxx Iceberg 172 Cup - Progress Thread

  Focus ST
Thought I’d best create a project thread for my Iceberg 172 Cup. Technically it’s not mine yet as I haven’t picked it up, but should get it at the weekend and wanted to get a thread going.

This will be a long read I reckon so grab a beer / tea / coffee or whatever.

Bit of an intro to me, car history etc. First car was a 51 plate 1.2 clio, full 182 interior etc. Tried to buy a real 182 and couldnt get insured. Since then I’ve always wanted a clio sport and every time I’ve went to buy one I’ve ended up with something else.

Went to view a 200 and ended up with a Corsa VXR, traded that in to buy another 200 a couple years later and walked away with a Fiesta ST. Few years after that I went to buy a 200T and ended up with a Focus ST. I have no idea why cause I’ve always wanted one, just never been the right one.

Anyway I’ve sold my Focus ST and the hunt started for a 182. My original plan was to hunt for an Inferno or RB with the preference being a FF Inferno 182. I very quickly realised that I was absolutely NOT paying the colour tax for inferno or RB. Literally right now there is an absolute dog of an RB up for nearly 4k, with clean examples closer to like 6 grand....

The good bit starts here

Anyway, hunted the forums a bit and found the perfect car. A 2003 Iceberg 172 Cup, folders full of history back to 2005, belts all up to date and not due, BUT the seller is taking it to Rensport for them to be done fresh before I collect.
Almost FSH
106k miles
Bilstein B14 Coilivers
KTR adjustable top mounts
KTR cat back (unsure what one)
Samco induction hoses and filter
Samco coolant hoses
Fresh Turinis wrapped in PS3s

Quick pic below from the garage, this is before prep, will upload more when I collect.

Things I have planned

Firstly I’m just giving it a full once over, check all the underside, nuts and bolts for anything, replace any little bits and bobs that need it. The car is really clean though so I don’t think there will be much.

Wheels off and arches all sealed and a nice coating of some durable wax for the winter. The turinis are mint so I think I will probably hunt for a winter set of wheels.

As for mods, the steering wheel is peeling so that will need either re trimmed or replaced, thinking they Ktec ones are the way to go.

Few carbon bits, washer blanks, bullets, exhaust surrounds etc.

I don’t know if this is sacrilege but I think I need to put in the non cup interior.....Eventually I would like a set of tread lines but will wait for a good deal.

That should be it initially. Will be keeping this thread updated throughout my ownership so thanks for reading and there should be way more to come.

Can’t blame you there, I guess you can just keep hold of the cup stuff anyway.

Car was dropped off at Rensport this morning for belts and a once over to see if anything else needs / wants done. Should have the feedback soon I think :)

In other news I’m chatting with Snappy now about a steering wheel,I may be premature since I haven’t even picked the car up, but I don’t care 😂

Must admit I didn’t know about iceberg cups until I saw one on eBay yesterday and then this.

Do love the colour, mine looks almost light blue in the low afternoon light.

  Focus ST
Yeah I’ve seen the one on eBay, it looks really clean! Stacks of history too by the looks of it. Will be a good buy for someone.

Car looks good, hope it turns out to be all you're wanting it to be!

There's been a few low prices bargain infernos for sale on facebook recently, not really a tax on that colour yet IMHO.

Yeah I hope so too!

You might be right, I seen one in maybe April time that was incredible condition go for like 2.5k. But I think that bargains like that are like hens teeth. I’m sure if I waited it out I’d get one, but I’m impatient and didn’t want to pass this one up. Seemed too good to miss.

There’s an inferno with ITBs on eBay the now that I think will be a great car for someone, but it was over budget and probably overkill too for me.

Looks decent that mate. Glad someone pointed you towards Snappy though. You won’t be disappointed. 👍

Yeah I asked on one of the Facebook pages and it was the most one sided question I’ve ever asked 😂 40 replies all saying snappy. He messaged me and asked me go reach out on Friday night, guessing he’s busy during the week.

Not going for anything mental, no colour. Black leather, black leather perforated thumb grips, black stitching and a little bit of Alcantara at the bottom.

I was probably one of the 40 replies. I’ve had the same as you’ve asked for. The little bit of alcantara is a nice touch.

Seen this for sale - looks like a great car, and a fair price too!

Look forward to seeing it progress.
Yeah I think there was a lot of interest. It does look really nice.

I’m hoping it’s ready for collection this weekend. 200 mile drive one way and the Mrs is only available to take me this weekend so I have my fingers crossed

I thought exactly the same thing, even commented on the post. Given the overall package and the fact it’s a dealer purchase so moffax will have the associated consumer rights. But as per Facebook I got the usual Laughing emojis from the ‘experts’

on the face of the photos and description I think it’s a great buy

Yeah I think it was a good price. I don’t think it was necessarily a bargain because it was defo strong money considering there’s a couple for sale now on less miles for slightly less. That being said, this one looks much cleaner and is going to have completely fresh belts etc. Didn’t even barter with the price, more than fair I think.

Mate if you have any problems he is duty bound to fix as well. He is a dealer. I think you done OK

Was the car priced at £3500 ? If so and there are no surprises when you pick the car up like bubbling back arches etc then you definitely got a bargain in my opinion.

I was looking for a 182 or 172 Cup over the last few months with a 4K budget and thought I’d have plenty of cars to choose from. That ended up not being the case. 8 out of 10 cars I looked at were rusty and in generally very poor condition yet were all priced similarly to yours.

Yours certainly looks straight in the video and pics, is a rare car with stacks of history etc so if it proves to be good in the metal then you did well for that price.

👍🏻

£3595 was the price mate yeah. Of course I still need to review in person etc but like you say, from the video and some additional pics the guys sent over to me, it looks clean. Couple bits need doing like the steering wheel and grill is faded. But as long as there’s no major rust or that, it’s all good.

Are you still looking ? I’ve seen 2 in the last couple days that fit the bill for you. 1 of them was £3,150 and the other closer to 4 I think. On the Clio Sport owners Facebook page.

if all it needs is the wheel retrimmed and the grill sorted then happy days ! I’d definitely try GTechniq C4 on the grill as it can work wonders on faded plastic.

I eventually found a Cup which needs a bit of work to get it back into a presentable condition. Needless to say it’s costing about twice as much as I thought it would to put right ! 😩😂

Yeah I think I have some Carbon Collective trim in the shed! Will try that first but don’t mind painting it to make it look fresh.

Yeah that’s always the way 😂 If I had more time / space I would have went for a fixer upper but I don’t lol.

Yeah, I’m quick finding that out! Thankfully, mine is in very good hands at the minute.
Good luck, I hope you have a good cushion 😂

So, the date has been set. Picking her
on Tuesday . Train from Edinburgh about half 10 should see me collecting early afternoon.

Snappy wheel has been ordered as well as carbon washer blanks. Will order a carbon exhaust surround trim thing later when I get a minute.

Was planning on spending some time cleaning the daily (actually the Mrs car) but the rain got the better of me. Couple of before shots anyway

Will post again on Tuesday after I’ve collected. Getting rather excited lol.

No plans for the day I collect, going to be a long day I think.

Collected the car today...

So finally got a decent update, went to collect the car today. Early start and 3 trains later I got to the garage.

Car was exactly as described, I’d seen detailed photos and a video so was pretty aware of the exact condition etc but nothing beats looking in person.

1F4B2497-4EB3-42A9-8AF0-D6683E20574F.jpeg

The only picture I have at the moment, at Gretna services on the way home. Was too dark by the time I got home to take anything exciting.

Observations so far

The car is spot on, drives really well, no unwanted rattles or noises. Really pleasant.

Bodywork is in truly great condition for a near 20 year old car. Couple stone chips on the bonnet, 1 that’s worse than the others and has a bit of rust. But other than that, it really is spot on. No rusty arches or anything else that I spotted during inspection.

Im also really surprised with the condition of the interior. Seats have little to no wear, nothing sagging etc. Plastics are sticky, as usual. Will defo need to replace / paint the door pulls ASAP. The centre console section isn’t as bad, but needs looked at.

Modifications are exactly as described. KTEC top mounts, Bilstein B14 coilivers, coolant hoses. The induction kit needs a new filter badly, it’s torn etc but not a big deal.

It has a KTEC exhaust of some sort and it sounds beautiful when idling / reving but Jesus Christ do I need a set of ear muffs at motorway speeds. Just a loud drone. I don’t do a lot of motorway miles so it should be fine.

Little bit of water in the wheel well, quite common on these I believe. Where does it usually come from ? It isn’t a massive puddle but certainly something I’ll be investigating.

C1CDD27E-BF19-450D-BE21-D9970FD90BF4.jpeg

Just now at home sitting with a beer and trawling through the years worth of paperwork. I’m not exaggerating, I have paperwork that goes back to 2006, and that’s just what I’ve come across so far.

Have a dyno graph showing 169bhp, I think I’m pretty happy with that!

Anyway, probably nothing to be done till the weekend now. Saturday I plan on getting her up in the air and having a proper good going over. From there I’ll compile a to do list.

TL;DR: Bought a 172 Cup, so far, so good.

Looks awesome.

I think the first place to check for water leaking into the spare wheel well is the back lights. Make sure they are as tight as you can get them with your hands
