Is the CTR the Clio's natural enemy?

  cock mobile.
Think the problem is that CTRs are more mainstream and hence more common than Renaultsport Clios

I think this also effects how the cars are looked after aswell - personaly I m yet to see a ctr in good condition for 02/03 plates.

Mines a 51 plate and is in fantastic condition, but it has been well looked after so it just depends on the car, same could be said about any car on the road.

They are certainly not cheap, not when you consider the toy list of a 182, which I could have got on a 04 plate minimum, but hey quality comes at a cost, lol :clown:

  RenaultSport clio 172 mk2
a few years ago respectable people used to drive saxo vtr's and vts's since the price drop of them all so dramaticly it opens the doors for the chavs to take full adavantage and get one. You see alot of scallies and chavs in saxo vtr's these days, about a year ago you would not see this.

172 prices are dramaticly falling now and i predict that in aboiut 8 months time this forum will be crawling with the likes of tracksuite rockport wearing owners.

in a year to 8 months from now i predict that civic type R's will still be driven by respectable people :)

how about that for a different twist on it ;) haha

(its all a joke by the way, no one comit suicide) but seriously ;) it will

  Golf MK7,GSX-R600 L4
i would compare the CTR to the Meg 225, surely size and price etc should come into it! I would take the Meg everytime!

  TDI tyre shreader
Id have a CTR if it wasnt for the looks from the front, the interior looks pap and that gear stick just looks wrong. Plus they always seem to be getting nicked/car jacked.

im not sure it falls into the same group as the meg 225.

The megane is a turbo for one and i would think its rivals are more like the focus st, leon cupra r, golf gti etc......

the clio, ctr, focus st170, 206 gti180 are more on the lines of being rivals!

but then everyones opinions are different!

I assume he's talking in terms of car size - a Clio is a super mini, like the Jazz. Why is there no type-r Jazz??????

  Clio 200 cup
in terms of car size yeah the civic is bigger, but performance wise there is very little between the two due to the clio being lighter!

http://www.letstorquebhp.com/fwd.asp

not completely accurate but pretty close!

a type-r jazz would be quality! there are apparently even a few jazz's with type-r engine conversions, but im yet to see one in the flesh!

I wouldnt own a UK spec civic type-r, i'd always feel I has second best to the far superior JDM spec car, and then if it had to be an import I would opt for a dc5 integra anyway LOL

Have at agree and it's the same with a lot of Japanese cars (as you will know from Subaru ownership).

I still like the look of the CTR but can't comment on the performance/handling as I've never driven one.

Yep, everyone's opinions are different! I'd class hot hatches something like this (based very loosely on size/performance):

Small superminis: Saxo VTS, 106 GTI, Lupo GTI

Superminis: 172/182, 206 GTI180, Polo GTI (slow-assed though), Mini Cooper S,

Slightly larger hatches: CTR, Meggy225, Focus ST, Astra VXR, Golf GTI

But when price comes into it the above don't work for all cases...

My mam has a Jazz and it may be slow but its handling is cracking - Jazz type r please white alloys, twin exhaust (vwr32 style) and recaro seats with a 1.8 vtec!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I will agree with Ally on classification but where does 197 roll in?

I recently sat in one and it felt very much like a Golf gti? Any one made that comparison?

not been in a 197 yet, but Evo have said the same in their eCoty test. The 197 has the build and feel. interior wise as a Golf.

197 is very Golf in feel. 197 steering wheel is very ncie, chunky feel and I like the exhausts too. Only problem is the Megane style heating controls not keen on them.

So is 197 a ctr competitor or is it pitched at a different consumer market altogether?

Is 197 a Golf GTi comeptitor a cheaper equivalent?

  MCS R56
Both are great cars, CTR is a nice motor but completely one dimensional compared with Clio. Numb stearing and I hate having no grunt down at low revs. Performance is almost identical, CTR has bigger top end but would be beaten on a track by Clio.

That said, the CTR is the better car to own, if a little more expensive. The Clio is a bargain hot hatch and is very rewarding for normal driving and track days. I would always choose the Clio for what it is. No-frills fun driving!

  Saab 93 Aero Wagon
Working with a guy who is heavily into the Jap scene cars (he owns an MR2 Turbo) and is constantly in touch with tuners and other hot jap car owners, i asked his opinion of the CTR, as he is prob one of the best placed people to comment, having owned and driven various hot Honda's over the years....including a CTR.
"Tripe" was the swift response!

In his opinion the engine is fantastic but is let down by everything else, hence why he is considering spending used CTR kinda money on an Itegra Type R.

Again though, this is only HIS opinion.
For the record he ain't a great fan of french hot hatches either although he reckons the Clio 172/182 variants are the next best efforts to the 205 GTi 1.9 which he used to own.

Clio 197 is a b**ch to place, too big to directly compare with 206/Polo/Mini (although the new 207 GTI is supposed to be even lardier than the 197), but smaller than the Megane/Astra/Focus/CTR class (even though the CTR is lighter). Maybe it needs its own class (possibly the only way it'll become a class leader like the 182 was lol ;)).

Gaz44: lack of low end grunt? I've always read that too, but my initial impressions are that there ain't much of a difference. Maybe my 172 was a duffer lol. The 172 has 147lbft @ 5400rpm (pulling around 1110kg), CTR has 145lbft @ 5900rpm (1204kg). The extra 90kg obviously makes a difference but I don't honestly think it's that much different.

Anyway, back to McCabe172's Q's - where the hell is a 197 aimed at? Without driving it, it sounds to me like it's a cheap man's Golf GTI (but then where does the Meggy fit in...). All I know is that my CTR would be quicker :rasp:

Having driven the Type-R for around 4 months and then driving the Clio Cup, I thought there was a noticable difference in low end grunt. Neither cars pull that hard below 3500rpm but I was quite impressed by the Clio. Even better now with remapped ECU. It just seemed that the Civic took and age to red-line when flooring it from low engine speeds. Probably has something to do with the higher rev range but you are right in saying there isn't much of a difference. Would be an interesting test.....

I used to have an Accord Type R. Biggest pile of poo ive ever owned!!! And it was faster (proven by me :D) and supposed to handle better than a CTR! i got tired of M3s kicking my butt. So i bought a TVR (and 172 CUP) :D

Oh hello all BTW - newbie!!

Nearly bought an Accord type-r but was sold before I got to garage, glad I didn't now as I m loved up with the 172 at mo. But how long will it last!!

It also needs to be considered than in comparison to the ctr the focus and astra have moved on in terms of audience and size. Mind I d love a go of the volvo 2.5 turbo in the st. Another car to consider along with ctr is the Alfa Romeo GTA - 3.2 litre in the front burning rubber like no tomorrow.

Dont you get tired of paying through the nose for shoddy blackpool workmanship? or them constantly breaking down?

You didn't buy your Cup a few months back from near Kettering did you?

CTR the natural enemy? You could be right but surely a direct comparison is something like a 206/207 Gti? Or a Cooper S? Cars such as LCR/ST170/and prob CTR are in the Meggy's class?

Will no-one let this subject die, do you know how depressing it is to log on, and the first thing you see is Clio vs CTR threads...who the f**k gives a s**t.
The forum is better than this, there so close in performance it would be like comparing whos better in the sack, michelle mcmanus or that fat bird from you've been framed...there both s**t!!

Several mags found the 197 to be very quick round a track. Quicker than golf Gtis and Focus St's... Has immense grip apparently.

I had an Accord Type R

Pile of poop!!!

Build quality was terrible. had more rattles than any other car ive had. And it was faster than a CTR, either that or i was changing quicker!

I heard michelle macmanus was ok in sack!!

Saw a Nissan sunny rock into the back end of a ctr this morning well funny. Ctr driver had a nice designer hair cut! Should have seen his face - soooo funny!

Silver 05 plate - in all honesty sunny was a mess and ctr was in ok state for rear shunt still considerably work to be done.

  20VT Clio & 9-5 HOT
thing is who cares if someone has a good haircut and a nice car!

better than having a s**t one and driving a crapper! :D

there is nothing wrong with someone looking after themselves, and a ctr is a very good affordable car. which is indeed a lot better than a clio.

its just as bad as people saying the clio is a gays car, haridressers car, shoppers car etc!
