Joining existing positive battery terminal to new wire.

I'm in the process of putting the battery in the boot of my car. Having run the 4 guage wire all the way through the car into the engine bay i'm now looking for the safest way to connect the new wire to the existing positive terminal wire (which obviously still has the battery terminal on it!)

Whats the best thing to use to join the two wires? - or if I just bolt them together whats the best way to seal the join?

One of them plus the usual crimp connections/ring terminals. £pence.
(cut the terminal off and fit a new connector you can bolt on)

Cover them in grease to seal them.

Yes tom. The existing positive terminal has the main wire going to it + 2 other wires. It then goes into trunking and dissapears into various things.

I'm only after an answer and some guidance on an easy solution as i'm no expert.

Ok.

1. Cut old terminal off
2. fit ring terminal to old wire
3. fit ring terminal to new wire
4. Bolt terminals together
5. cover in grease
6. protect bare metal with tape.

if you going to the trouble of crimping terminals then might as well use a male / female shrouded type removing the need for bolts and insulating with tape == bit pikey

Wolf, that was just to protect the bare metal, even with shrouded you would need to tape up.

Thats nice that, shame you are going to cover it in tape.
(obviously you wouldnt leave it exposed if it touches anything thats spark time)

Going to bolt it together as first planned. Can't be arsed to spend anymore money. Next week lets spend a ton moving the battery 5 m.

Moving the battery's a waste of time if you've got a 5m wheelbase to contend with.

no need to tape them if they were a decent heavy duty m/f connector and shrouded properly, not that im familar with such for a car battery tho

to connect two 4 AWG cables together

get a 25mm2 through crimp and some heat shrink sleeving but you'll need to find a spark with a good crimper

just a bodge way of doing things in my oppinion - solder them and heatshrink them.
to be fair crimps are probably better quality than the renault wiring is anyway, but still wouldnt be happy with the job doing it that way

every electrician in the land uses crimp connectors.

so i wouldn't say they are a bodge job and i'm not talking 2.5mm2 i'm talking right up to 1000mm2
